 Conflicts can be internal or external.
 Drama can have many subgenres such as
comedy, romance etc.

3.  I am going to base my storyline on a true story – therefore
the setting, themes, plot and characters will all reflect real
life situations.
 In my audience research a majority of the recipients said
they would want the main character to be of the same age
as them. As my target audience are aged between 16-25,
my protagonist will be this age.
 A majority of my audience also answered that they would
want the protagonist to be female (a majority of both men
and women said this) so the protagonist will also be
female.
 The sub-genres of my film will be melodrama, LGBTQ and
romance as many of the films I researched into had more
than one sub-genre. The Perks of Being a Wallflower, for
example, had the sub-genres coming of age, romance,
drama.

4. Roland Barthes has a theory that there are 5 codes
within any narrative, I will apply this to my own
work. One of these is the enigma code - The way
tension is built up to leave the audience wonder
what is going to happen next. When researching
into trailers this code was applied in many of them
– they left the audience wanting more without
giving too much narrative detail away.
As one of my sub-genres is mystery I am going to
do this in my trailer too, only give away little parts
of the narrative and leave the

5. TZVETAN TODOROV
Todorov suggested that conventional narratives are structured in five stages:
 A state of equilibrium at the outset;
 A disruption of the equilibrium by some action;
 A recognition that there has been a disruption;
 An attempt to repair the disruption;
 A reinstatement of the equilibrium
This type of narrative was seen in many of the films and trailers I researched: The
Avengers, Alice in Wonderland, Bridesmaids…
However, as one of my subgenres is melodrama – I want it to be very sad. For this
reason I am going to follow Todorov’s narrative structure, but am not going to have a
reinstatement of the equilibrium, and the storyline is not going to end happily. As
this will be challenging the form of storyline in many mainstream movies hopefully it
will hopefully shock the audience. In my trailer I will show the disruption of the
equilibrium but use Barthes’ enigma code to leave them wondering what happens.

6. Levi-Strauss looked at narrative structure in terms of binary
oppositions. Binary oppositions are sets of opposite values
which reveal the structure of media texts.
In my trailer I am going to have the equilbrium disrupted by
the binary opposite of the protagonist. The binary opposites I
will show are:
 Kind vs horrible
 Good vs bad
 Loneliness vs family
I will use these oppositions to create moral questions in the
audiences heads and to emphasise the conflict and themes
within the trailer.
