Generation Y is taking over the workplace and it’s sooner than you think. By 2025, they will comprise 75% of the workforce.
Due to demographic shifts, including more experienced Baby Boomer workers retiring, it is essential to engage Generation Y now so they are able to fulfill expected talent shortages in the near future. Developing a strong leadership pipeline and expertise are key to business continuity.
Unfortunately, many organizations are not prepared to attract, engage, and retain Generation Y employees because they continue to use management practices that are off target. Neglecting to engage Generation Y will result in talent shortages, turnover expenses, and a damaged reputation.
Generation Y had a different upbringing than the Baby Boomers and Generation X; however, much of what they demand in the workplace will engage the entire workforce, not just their demographic. Engaging Generation Y is as much about modernizing your workplace as it is about creating an environment to capture the best new talent; the ROI is far-reaching.
Learn more about the trends that are shaping the future of work and how embracing technology and the social web can help organizations to capture the millennial workforce and enhance organizational performance.
Green Templeton College, University of Oxford, 2016: Emerging market populations have never been younger and may never be larger.
Over one billion young people (aged between 10 and 24) live in Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Turkey and smaller emerging markets. India has over 700 million and China more than 500 million people under 30. This offers huge potential to harness their energy and creativity by engaging them in productive activities.
Participants in the symposium on Young People and the Future of Emerging Markets concluded that governments’ failure to understand the mind sets of young people, master intergenerational communications and take measures to preserve the planet for future generations is extremely short sighted.
The Emerging Markets Symposium brought together over 50 international experts and graduate students from 20 emerging market and high income countries. Hosted by Green Templeton College on 7-10 January, the symposium was designed to ensure its conclusions were grounded in the insights and priorities of young people.

American authors William Strauss and Neil Howe are widely credited for coining the term ‘Millennials’ in their 1991 book Generations. The term, which describes the generation of Americans born roughly between 1980 and 2000, has since been popularised on a global scale. Within a year from now the Millennials will make up 50 percent of the UK’s workforce.
In terms of retention, it’s a worrying statistic when you consider that Millennials are the most likely of all generations to say they will leave their company in the next 12 months if and when the job market improves.
In order to increase retention among Millennials and make your workplace one which gets the best of your workforce, it’s worth considering the following tips:
The Hawthorne effect (also referred to as the observer effect) refers to a phenomenon whereby workers improve or modify an aspect of their behavior in response to the fact of change in their environment, rather than in response to the nature of the change itself. The "Hawthorne effect" study suggested that the novelty of having research conducted and the increased attention from such could lead to temporary increases in productivity. This effect was observed for minute increases in illumination. In these lighting studies, light intensity was altered to examine its effect on worker productivity. Most industrial/occupational psychology and organizational behavior textbooks refer to the illumination studies. Only occasionally are the rest of the studies mentioned
