Andrew Barnes is a senior structural engineer with over 25 years of experience in projects ranging from residential to large commercial and government facilities. He has a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Technology QLD and is a Fellow of Engineers Australia. He has extensive experience in heritage restoration projects and has served on the Queensland Heritage Council. He has worked on numerous projects across various sectors including education, government, retail, bridges, and heritage restoration.

Expansion to the existing including; 6 new cinemas, Riverwalk

14 cinemas and seven separate buildings containing various

Structural and civil engineering consulting for Centre extensions,
including: 5,000m² new Woolworths, specialty stores and
16,000m² car park. A suspended floor was used to enable future

Jindalee Central ($5M)
Included; Bi-Lo and five to six specialty stores, comprising the
construction of concrete tilt walls and a steel frames structure
using Kingspan roof sheeting.

Conservation Management Plan Acland #2
Preparation of Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for the
overall site for this small former, intact, underground coal mine
listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.
Magnetic Island WWII Fort
Detailed Conservation Management Plan (CMP) and
engineering report for this site.
Cape Pallarenda Battery, Townsville
Constructed in 1942 during WWII. Engineering assessment for
reinforced concrete buildings with the early stages of concrete
cancer.
Howard Smith Wharves
Structural heritage advice provided to council for the retention of
the 1930's timber wharf located under the Story Bridge
Brisbane.
MT Spec Conservation Management Plan (CMP)
Prepared for 18km of heritage listed road to identify and
prioritised all features along the route of heritage significance,
including Little Crystal Creek bridge which is the only non-
reinforced concrete arch bridge in Queensland.
Rocky Creek Igloo
Structural heritage advice on one of the last remaining World
War II Timber Igloos used as a Theatre during the war.
Irvinebank State Treatment Works (2009)
Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for this tin mining facility,
one of the last left in Australia which operated since the late
1880’s.
Toowoomba Goods Shed – Queensland Rail
Provided specialist structural heritage engineering for this
building which is approx. 140 years old with significant structural
damage. Andrew investigated and prepared reports to allow the
restoration of this building with the replacement of only 5% of
the existing structural members with new members.
Eastern Busway
Provided specialist heritage engineering advice on the old
tramways and engineering methods to converse sections of the
tracks.
Northern Busway
Structural engineering heritage assessment for the design and
construction of the Northern Busway on Heritage listed places
along the route. Included in the assessment was the stone wall
to Herston Road.
North South Bypass Tunnel
Structural heritage engineering assessment reporting and
strengthening on all heritage listed buildings above the Clem 7
tunnel, assessments included the RNA show grounds, Wickham
Hotel and St Mary’s.
Ravenswood Township
Monitoring for blasting from Carpentaria Gold on heritage listed
buildings and providing structural rectification details to repair

Restoration of St John's Cathedral
Building restoration including structural analysis of the
west end and installation of new central tower roof lifted
into position in 2008.
Restoration of the Commissariat Store
One of the oldest building in Queensland still in use built
in 1829. The structural engineers worked
sympathetically with the architect to introduce lifts, etc.
and remove columns in a way that did not detract from
the heritage significance of the building.

Dusty Roads Bridge
Design of 4/20m span bridge over Deldabah Creek, including a
new bridge adjacent to the existing to allow traffic flow during
construction.
North Coast Rail Inspection Contract
Professional services for the management of the maintenance of
the rail network and associated infrastructure in the Coffs
Harbour and Casino Region. Project included: inspection and
rating of 460 structures compiling of 117 steel bridges, 150
concrete under bridges, 15 over bridges, 9 tunnels and 169
large culverts on the North Coast line between Coffs harbour
and the QLD border before June 2009. Also commissioned to
visually inspect all structures and record all defect and inventory
information, upload all recorded data to ARTC’s asset
management system, and provide a ‘As new’ and ‘As is’ load
rating.

Structural inspection of all timber members, drill testing, under
water assessment and testing of piers.
Long Bridge, Maitland ($150K)
Concrete repairs, bridge joints and bearings of 25 span bridge.

Long Bridge – Maitland
Inspection, assessment and contract administration of repairs to
approx. 25 spans, each 10m.
Swamp Creek
Replaced half of the bridge at one time allowing traffic to
continue to flow without the need of a diversion track for 30,000
cars/day. This bridge was the second Doohlan deck to be
installed in NSW.
