Andrew has over 25 years’ experience as a structural engineer, undertaking a range of projects from extensions to residences
to educational and government facilities and design and construct projects, including the multi-billion dollar Kuala Lumpur
International Airport (KLIA).
Andrew has a keen interest in heritage and was on the Queensland Heritage Council for 6 years up until 2012.

Structural and civil engineering, including complete
refurbishment of Kmart, refurbishment works to other existing
shops, development of new shopping complex, retail mall bridge
connecting existing shopping centre to new complex, as well as
existing car park refurbishment with a total works area of
20,300m². Civil works involve stormwater and pavement
refurbishment.
 Capalaba Central Shopping Centre Refurbishment ($20M)
Civil and structural engineer for works including; 4,000m² car
park development, 7,000m² retail space extensions for bulky
goods and specialty store outlets.
 Sunshine Plaza ($30M)
Expansion to the existing including; 6 new cinemas, Riverwalk
extension, new Woolworths and specialty shops.
 Harbourtown Shopping Centre ($50M)
14 cinemas and seven separate buildings containing various
specialty retail shops.
 Bargara Shopping Centre
Structural and civil engineering consulting for Centre extensions,
including: 5,000m² new Woolworths, specialty stores and
16,000m² car park. A suspended floor was used to enable future
development.
 Jindalee Central ($5M)
Included; Bi-Lo and five to six specialty stores, comprising the
construction of concrete tilt walls and a steel frames structure
using Kingspan roof sheeting.
 Red Hill Homemaker Centre, Rockhampton ($15M)
Involved the development of 20,000m² bulky goods outlet,
incorporating a conventional slab on ground floors, a steel
framed superstructure and tilt-up concrete exterior wall panels.
 Woden Plaza Shopping Centre ($80M)

HERITAGE
 Conservation Management Plan Acland #2
Preparation of Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for the
overall site for this small former, intact, underground coal mine
listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.
 Magnetic Island WWII Fort
Detailed Conservation Management Plan (CMP) and
engineering report for this site.
 Cape Pallarenda Battery, Townsville
Constructed in 1942 during WWII. Engineering assessment for
reinforced concrete buildings with the early stages of concrete
cancer.
 Howard Smith Wharves
Structural heritage advice provided to council for the retention of
the 1930's timber wharf located under the Story Bridge
Brisbane.
 MT Spec Conservation Management Plan (CMP)
Prepared for 18km of heritage listed road to identify and
prioritised all features along the route of heritage significance,
including Little Crystal Creek bridge which is the only non-
reinforced concrete arch bridge in Queensland.
 Rocky Creek Igloo
Structural heritage advice on one of the last remaining World
War II Timber Igloos used as a Theatre during the war.
 Irvinebank State Treatment Works (2009)
Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for this tin mining facility,
one of the last left in Australia which operated since the late
1880’s.
 Toowoomba Goods Shed – Queensland Rail
Provided specialist structural heritage engineering for this
building which is approx. 140 years old with significant structural
damage. Andrew investigated and prepared reports to allow the
restoration of this building with the replacement of only 5% of
the existing structural members with new members.
 Eastern Busway
Provided specialist heritage engineering advice on the old
tramways and engineering methods to converse sections of the
tracks.
 Northern Busway
Structural engineering heritage assessment for the design and
construction of the Northern Busway on Heritage listed places
along the route. Included in the assessment was the stone wall
to Herston Road.
 North South Bypass Tunnel
Structural heritage engineering assessment reporting and
strengthening on all heritage listed buildings above the Clem 7
tunnel, assessments included the RNA show grounds, Wickham
Hotel and St Mary’s.
 Ravenswood Township
Monitoring for blasting from Carpentaria Gold on heritage listed
buildings and providing structural rectification details to repair
heritage listed buildings.
 Woody Island Lighthouse
Structural heritage assessment and remedial works for timber
lighthouse c1860
 Spicers Gap
Civil assessment of road including engineering heritage
significance.
 Evans Head Hanger
Structural heritage engineering assessment of Evans
Head hanger constructed during WWII.
 Thomas Dixon Centre Retaining Walls – West End
Brisbane
Development of proposal for strengthening of the
existing heritage listed retaining wall.
 Brisbane Town Hall Clock Tower
Structural inspection of concrete, masonry and timber
elements during the clock tower refurbishment
 Restoration of St John's Cathedral
Building restoration including structural analysis of the
west end and installation of new central tower roof lifted
into position in 2008.
 Restoration of the Commissariat Store
One of the oldest building in Queensland still in use built
in 1829. The structural engineers worked
sympathetically with the architect to introduce lifts, etc.
and remove columns in a way that did not detract from
the heritage significance of the building.
 Claremont House – Newcastle
Restoration stabilization and strengthening of ground for
this 1820’s building.
 Pyrmont Bridge Restoration – Sydney
Andrew spent 8 months investigating strengthening and
stabilising this heritage listed bridge.
 Breakfast Creek Hotel – Brisbane
Structural Heritage Report required as a result of the
construction of the Inner City Bypass.
 St Paul's Cathedral – Brisbane
Preparation of structural remedial repairs

Strengthening and heritage assessment.

BRIDGES
 Dusty Roads Bridge
Design of 4/20m span bridge over Deldabah Creek, including a
new bridge adjacent to the existing to allow traffic flow during
construction.
 North Coast Rail Inspection Contract
Professional services for the management of the maintenance of
the rail network and associated infrastructure in the Coffs
Harbour and Casino Region. Project included: inspection and
rating of 460 structures compiling of 117 steel bridges, 150
concrete under bridges, 15 over bridges, 9 tunnels and 169
large culverts on the North Coast line between Coffs harbour
and the QLD border before June 2009. Also commissioned to
visually inspect all structures and record all defect and inventory
information, upload all recorded data to ARTC’s asset
management system, and provide a ‘As new’ and ‘As is’ load
rating.
 Pyrmont Bridge, Darling Harbour – Sydney
Structural inspection of all timber members, drill testing, under
water assessment and testing of piers.
 Long Bridge, Maitland ($150K)
Concrete repairs, bridge joints and bearings of 25 span bridge.
 Cessnock City Council
- Load rating 15 timber bridges
- Preparation of assessment management manual for
prioritising all bridges, identifying those requiring work and
allocating budgets to cover these works
- Inspection, review, evaluation and preparing bridge strategy
for 90 bridges within the shire including steel, concrete and
timber and approximately 70 timber bridges
 Assessment/Design of 4 New Bridges
Including Swamp Creek, William Street, Mitchell Avenue, Listers
Bridge.
 Long Bridge – Maitland
Inspection, assessment and contract administration of repairs to
approx. 25 spans, each 10m.
 Swamp Creek
Replaced half of the bridge at one time allowing traffic to
continue to flow without the need of a diversion track for 30,000
cars/day. This bridge was the second Doohlan deck to be
installed in NSW.
 William Street Bridge.
 Russell Street Rail Bridge
Expert report on cracking
 Mitchell Avenue – Cessnock
Steel girder with timber deck was upgraded with a concrete deck
and shear studs to cater for T44 loading.
 Ferguson Street Bridge – Cessnock
structural assessment and upgrading of this timber bridge.
 Wilderness Creek Bridge – Pokobin
Structural assessment and recommendations for a heritage
listed bridge.
 Biggenden Shire Council
Structural inspection report and load rating of 2 timber bridges.

Structural inspection and report two timber bridges.

Inspection of load rating of 3 timber bridges.

Andrew Barnes Sydney | Brisbane | Perth | Broome | Central Coast | Newcastle | Western Sydney HERITAGE  Conservation Management Plan Acland #2 Preparation of Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for the overall site for this small former, intact, underground coal mine listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.  Magnetic Island WWII Fort Detailed Conservation Management Plan (CMP) and engineering report for this site.  Cape Pallarenda Battery, Townsville Constructed in 1942 during WWII. Engineering assessment for reinforced concrete buildings with the early stages of concrete cancer.  Howard Smith Wharves Structural heritage advice provided to council for the retention of the 1930's timber wharf located under the Story Bridge Brisbane.  MT Spec Conservation Management Plan (CMP) Prepared for 18km of heritage listed road to identify and prioritised all features along the route of heritage significance, including Little Crystal Creek bridge which is the only non- reinforced concrete arch bridge in Queensland.  Rocky Creek Igloo Structural heritage advice on one of the last remaining World War II Timber Igloos used as a Theatre during the war.  Irvinebank State Treatment Works (2009) Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for this tin mining facility, one of the last left in Australia which operated since the late 1880’s.  Toowoomba Goods Shed – Queensland Rail Provided specialist structural heritage engineering for this building which is approx. 140 years old with significant structural damage. Andrew investigated and prepared reports to allow the restoration of this building with the replacement of only 5% of the existing structural members with new members.  Eastern Busway Provided specialist heritage engineering advice on the old tramways and engineering methods to converse sections of the tracks.  Northern Busway Structural engineering heritage assessment for the design and construction of the Northern Busway on Heritage listed places along the route. Included in the assessment was the stone wall to Herston Road.  North South Bypass Tunnel Structural heritage engineering assessment reporting and strengthening on all heritage listed buildings above the Clem 7 tunnel, assessments included the RNA show grounds, Wickham Hotel and St Mary’s.  Ravenswood Township Monitoring for blasting from Carpentaria Gold on heritage listed buildings and providing structural rectification details to repair heritage listed buildings.  Woody Island Lighthouse Structural heritage assessment and remedial works for timber lighthouse c1860  Spicers Gap Civil assessment of road including engineering heritage significance.  Evans Head Hanger Structural heritage engineering assessment of Evans Head hanger constructed during WWII.  Thomas Dixon Centre Retaining Walls – West End Brisbane Development of proposal for strengthening of the existing heritage listed retaining wall.  Brisbane Town Hall Clock Tower Structural inspection of concrete, masonry and timber elements during the clock tower refurbishment  Restoration of St John's Cathedral Building restoration including structural analysis of the west end and installation of new central tower roof lifted into position in 2008.  Restoration of the Commissariat Store One of the oldest building in Queensland still in use built in 1829. The structural engineers worked sympathetically with the architect to introduce lifts, etc. and remove columns in a way that did not detract from the heritage significance of the building.  Claremont House – Newcastle Restoration stabilization and strengthening of ground for this 1820’s building.  Pyrmont Bridge Restoration – Sydney Andrew spent 8 months investigating strengthening and stabilising this heritage listed bridge.  Breakfast Creek Hotel – Brisbane Structural Heritage Report required as a result of the construction of the Inner City Bypass.  St Paul's Cathedral – Brisbane Preparation of structural remedial repairs  Cairns Yacht Club Relocation Strengthening and heritage assessment.  Methodist Church – Maitland  Wambo Homestead – Hunter Valley  he Manse – Maitland  Yungabarra Heritage Assessment and Structural Review  Conservation Study, East Water Tower – Bundaberg

Andrew Barnes Sydney | Brisbane | Perth | Broome | Central Coast | Newcastle | Western Sydney BRIDGES  Dusty Roads Bridge Design of 4/20m span bridge over Deldabah Creek, including a new bridge adjacent to the existing to allow traffic flow during construction.  North Coast Rail Inspection Contract Professional services for the management of the maintenance of the rail network and associated infrastructure in the Coffs Harbour and Casino Region. Project included: inspection and rating of 460 structures compiling of 117 steel bridges, 150 concrete under bridges, 15 over bridges, 9 tunnels and 169 large culverts on the North Coast line between Coffs harbour and the QLD border before June 2009. Also commissioned to visually inspect all structures and record all defect and inventory information, upload all recorded data to ARTC’s asset management system, and provide a ‘As new’ and ‘As is’ load rating.  Pyrmont Bridge, Darling Harbour – Sydney Structural inspection of all timber members, drill testing, under water assessment and testing of piers.  Long Bridge, Maitland ($150K) Concrete repairs, bridge joints and bearings of 25 span bridge.  Cessnock City Council - Load rating 15 timber bridges - Preparation of assessment management manual for prioritising all bridges, identifying those requiring work and allocating budgets to cover these works - Inspection, review, evaluation and preparing bridge strategy for 90 bridges within the shire including steel, concrete and timber and approximately 70 timber bridges  Assessment/Design of 4 New Bridges Including Swamp Creek, William Street, Mitchell Avenue, Listers Bridge.  Long Bridge – Maitland Inspection, assessment and contract administration of repairs to approx. 25 spans, each 10m.  Swamp Creek Replaced half of the bridge at one time allowing traffic to continue to flow without the need of a diversion track for 30,000 cars/day. This bridge was the second Doohlan deck to be installed in NSW.  William Street Bridge.  Russell Street Rail Bridge Expert report on cracking  Mitchell Avenue – Cessnock Steel girder with timber deck was upgraded with a concrete deck and shear studs to cater for T44 loading.  Ferguson Street Bridge – Cessnock structural assessment and upgrading of this timber bridge.  Wilderness Creek Bridge – Pokobin Structural assessment and recommendations for a heritage listed bridge.  Biggenden Shire Council Structural inspection report and load rating of 2 timber bridges.  Perry Shire Council Structural inspection and report two timber bridges.  Singleton Shire Council Inspection of load rating of 3 timber bridges.  Blue Mountains Inspection and load rating of one timber bridge.  Boonah Shire Council Structural inspections and on-going assistance with 17 timber bridges, 5 steel bridges and 3 concrete bridges.  Kingaroy Shire Council Structural inspection of 8 timber bridges and the structural assessment and load rating of 4 timber bridges.  Maroochy Shire Council Structural inspection of 6 timber bridges  Eidsvold Shire Council Structural inspection and recommendation on repairs  Monto Shire Council Structural inspection of 22 bridges  Woocoo Shire Council Inspection of 9 timber bridges  Fitzroy Shire Council Review of 17 bridges including 4 concrete  Brettons #2 – Caloundra Single 14m span concrete bridge over existing stream.
