What is gender? It refers to the meaning a culture attaches to being a female and male. Because society gives men more power and resources than women, gender is an important dimension of social stratification
Through socialization process, people incorporate gender into their personalities (gender identities) as well as their actions (gender roles). The major agents of socialization-family, peer groups, schools, and the mass media-reinforce cultural definitions of what is feminine and masculine
More specifically… Gender roles- are attitudes and activities that society links to each sex Patriarchy- literally translates to “ rule of the fathers”, is a form of social organization in which males dominate females Matriarchy- is a form of social organization in which females dominate males
Sexism- is the belief that one sex is innately superior to the other; it is the ideological basis of pariarchy Feminism- is the advocacy of social equality for men and women, in opposition to patriarchy and sexism Minority- any category of people, characterized by physical or cultural difference, that a society sets apart and subordinates
