Street harassment involves a person or persons inflicting unsolicited and unwanted comments, gestures, conversations or interactions in a public space
upon another person, usually in a sexually suggestive or predatory manner. In the context of male to female street harassment in Australia, the
occurrence rate is extremely high with almost every woman experiencing it at some point (The Australia Institute 2015). Whilst any person, regardless
of gender, can be the perpetrator of these actions and it is a minority of people who offend, there are particular social and cultural influences effecting
male to female occurrences that should be addressed as the cultural environment promoting these actions reflect the entrenched gender– discrimination
that permeates sectors of Australian culture.
Eleanor Gordon–Smith (2016) conducted a series of interviews with men who approached her in Kings Cross. During these interviews she enquired
why they approached women they did not know. The men almost universally stated that they wanted to compliment women, make them smile and
improve their night, with the sentiment that, as men, they would love to have a woman approach them like that so they would do it in turn. They
discussed actions such as playfully slapping a woman's "butt" with the belief she would feel happy being chosen as the most attractive person in her

Discrimination is an ongoing problem that exists in many forms and is often studied by social psychologists. According to Bordens and Horowitz
(2014), discrimination is defined as "overt behavior– often negatively directed toward a particular group and often tied to prejudicial attitudes– which
involves behaving in different ways toward members of different groups" (p. 106). Although discriminatory behaviors have seemed to simmer down
over the past decades, individuals still to this day continue to face discrimination based on characteristics such as their race, religion, age, gender, and
sexual orientation. My paper focuses on three studies about gender discrimination, or sexism. These studies target gender discrimination in the
workplace, people's perceptions and levels of supportiveness towards situations which entail gender discrimination, and factors that influence their
perceptions. The first portion of the paper consists of summaries of the articles while the second section includes an analysis of these studies. In one
study conducted by Hess (2013), mock job interviews were completed with female college students to investigate nonverbal gender discrimination. The
hypothesis was that experienced interviewers would show more unfavorable behaviors towards women applying for a masculine, or incongruent, job
and more favorable behaviors towards those interviewing for job that is considered to be feminine, or congruent. The researchers believed that

Female rights activists in Canada and all over the entire world are helping to bridge the gender gap. These activists tackle a large variety of issues
that impact women around the world. For example, in November of 2005 almost 200 female activists from nearly 70 countries met in Sri Lanka to

Personal Reaction The reason why I chose this article was because as a female I found it interesting to see how women are treated differently due to
prejudice in the workplace, especially women who are in positions of power. In addition, as a woman who would like to work in the corporate business
world, I found it intriguing that a feature as simple as hair colour, can have a major impact on how people perceive others. As a Muslim woman
who wears a Hijab, I have never really faced prejudice based on my hair, but I have faced prejudice for covering my hair. This sounds

Although there has been significant improvement since when women were first able to work and equal opportunity laws were created, there is still
some room for more improvement. The federal government has made laws over the years such as The Civil Rights act, Equal Pay Act and Family and
Medical Leave act, in an attempt to put an end to gender discrimination and although it is working to some extent in lower–management positions, those
laws seem to have little effect on the upper–level managerial positions. Recent questions have come up about whether the federal laws are helping
enough with the gender wage gap and women representation, along with questions where or not gender discrimination is the reason why women
are getting paid less or if there are other underlying factors to consider. Although The Equal Pay Act of 1963 states that there shall not be any
discrimination on an employees pay wages based off of their sex, we still see a major pay gap in today's society. As of 2013, women only earn 78.3

Gender And Gender Discrimination Street harassment involves a person or persons inflicting unsolicited and unwanted comments, gestures, conversations or interactions in a public space upon another person, usually in a sexually suggestive or predatory manner. In the context of male to female street harassment in Australia, the occurrence rate is extremely high with almost every woman experiencing it at some point (The Australia Institute 2015). Whilst any person, regardless of gender, can be the perpetrator of these actions and it is a minority of people who offend, there are particular social and cultural influences effecting male to female occurrences that should be addressed as the cultural environment promoting these actions reflect the entrenched gender– discrimination that permeates sectors of Australian culture. Eleanor Gordon–Smith (2016) conducted a series of interviews with men who approached her in Kings Cross. During these interviews she enquired why they approached women they did not know. The men almost universally stated that they wanted to compliment women, make them smile and improve their night, with the sentiment that, as men, they would love to have a woman approach them like that so they would do it in turn. According to Bordens and Horowitz (2014), discrimination is defined as "overt behavior– often negatively directed toward a particular group and often tied to prejudicial attitudes– which involves behaving in different ways toward members of different groups" (p. 106).
