The document discusses creating sustainable ashrams or habitats for recruiting and training devotees in the West. It notes that ashrams were once the focus but congregations are now more important. It argues that ashram life can still be valuable for young single people and students to experience celibate student life before marriage. The document provides lessons from various devotees on making ashrams welcoming and accommodating cultural diversity. It emphasizes the need to attract educated young Westerners by engaging them in ways they find satisfying and allowing them to gradually accept practices. The Bhakti Academy example shows success in recruiting local young college-educated people through flexible programs.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

GBC College Recruiting and Training Youth
1. Creating a Bhakti HabitatAshram Development for Recruiting and Training for ISKCON Devotees in the West
Part 1: Introduction and Overview
Presented for the GBC College by Kalakantha das
Temple President, ISKCON Gainesville, Florida, USA
2. Dedicated to
His Divine Grace
A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami
Prabhupada
Founder Acharya of the
International Society for
Krishna Consciousness
3. Outline
Introduction: Teachers & Lessons
Four Essentials for Creating a Sustainable Bhakti Habitat
1. The Environmentalist
2. The Environment
3. “Nitya Siddha Krishna Prema”
4. Thinking Globally, Acting Locally
4. What Happened to our Ashrams?
1970s: All ashram, no congregation
1980s: Ashrams begin disappearing
1990s: Turning to our congregations
Today: Balance is hard to find
5. Are Ashrams Still Relevant?
Why not become devotees from home?
That is fine. However, ashram experience is preferable for single young
people with more time for spiritual life.
What about gurukulis and students of Indian descent?
Ashram life is an invaluable experience for everyone.
Isn’t ashram living for lazies and crazies?
No. It’s for serious devotees, but for a limited period.
6. “Ashram Development” refers to helping young
people experience single, celibate student life
followed, in most cases, by married life.
7. Key Lessons from Danavir Maharaja:
- Hungry spider
- Homeless to head pujari
- Find something superior in everyone
8. Key Lessons From Prithu Prabhu:
- Recruit or Die!
- Promote a plurality of gurus.
9. Key Lesson From Hridayananda Goswami:
- Within regulative principles, accept and embrace cultural
diversity. Make it easy for people to become devotees.
10. Key Lesson From Radhanatha Swami:
- Create an atmosphere of genuine love and care.
11. …My request to you is that you enter into the universities and colleges
wherever possible and preach there with a view to recruiting some first-class
devotees for helping me manage and push on this movement all over the
world. Overall there is shortage of first-class, experienced men to manage
things just to the highest standard, as you are doing. Therefore I am calling
upon you the big leaders to push this idea forward, namely, to attract some
educated men to join us. The idea is that they will only agree to join us if we
ourselves conduct ourselves intelligently by the preaching approach. The secret
will be to engage them as they like to be engaged, that is, supposing I have got
some education, I am business student, or I have got some skill or talent, I am
typist or musician or something like that, so I will like to utilize these things for
Krishna only if I am encouraged in a certain way, very tactfully, and I must not
be discouraged by too much forcing me at first to accept everything of shaving
the head, rising very early, going for street sankirtana, like that. No, let me
come gradually, let me study also Krishna Consciousness and see how it is
practical and sublime. Gradually I may get some taste for these other things
and agree to do them voluntarily and intelligently. We are not dogma or like
army-camp, no. We are servants of Krishna, that means because we
understand that Krishna is our Protector under all circumstances, we have no
more any anxiety, so we become very liberal and tolerant of all kinds of seeing
others' sinful activities, and we see them innocent victims of maya, and we try
to help them understand what is the real position of life. So you know this art,
how to attract and engage men, so aim yourself at the top-class of men and
give them every opportunity and facility to become convinced of our
philosophy and engage themselves to their satisfaction. That will be the best
contribution. Now spread this idea also to the other leaders.
13. “Our dear Lord Krishna, please
send new devotees.”
“Our dear Lord Krishna, if You
send new devotees, we
promise to take care of them.”
A Fresh Approach
14.
15. Bhakti Academy Students 2015
- 26 students
- 17 in college or college-educated
- 13 local recruits
- 7 gurukulis
- 6 transfers from other communities
- 2 full time, 7 part time book distributors;
43,000 books distributed in 2015 (#6 in NA)
16. In Summary:
1. Young Westerners will still join ISKCON;
2. To attract them we need to change our strategies.
Editor's Notes
Hare Krishna!
Now I’d like to tell you about the mentors who taught me the most about the Bhakti Habitat.
Those of us who have been around for a while have seen a tremendous decrease in the numbers of young Westerners taking part in Krishna consciousness. The ashrams where these young devotees lived have also diminished significantly. Here’s an overview of what happened in North America:
1 Nearly all of SP’s disciples lived in ashrams and fondly remember much or all of their ashram lives. 2. Why? Learn simplicity, tolerance, austerity, cleanliness. 3. One Godbrother used to describe residents of some non-ISKCON Indian ashrams as ‘sadhana bums.’ Perception is, ashrams are for losers, incompetents. A dynamic ashram with bright, productive residents immediately changes that perception.
Can be KC out of temple residence, but more difficult to imbibe SP’s preaching mood. Preaching activities easy in ashram. Abhiram on SP on varnashrama.
3 – Amala Bhakta
He showed it was still possible.
The ultimate lessons come from Srila Prabhupada, for he is the acarya who actually did it. Please listen to this long but pertinent excerpt from Srila Prabhupada’s letter to his disciple Sukadeva das in December of 1972:
The ultimate lessons come from Srila Prabhupada, for he is the acarya who actually did it. Please listen to this long but pertinent excerpt from Srila Prabhupada’s letter to his disciple Sukadeva das in December of 1972:
Srila Prabhupada asked his disciples to reach out to educated young people, to use intelligence to facilitate and let them come gradually. One of the downfalls of the ashrams in North America was a hierarchial sense of superiority sometimes manifested by inexperienced temple leaders. Newcomers were seen as inferiors and indefinitely assigned to repetitious, menial tasks. Of course it’s good for newcomers to wash the pots, but that should not be their only service, as it was for Sadaputa Prabhu before someone finally found out he had a college degree. To develop a successful Bhakti Habitat we must treat the newcomer as the most important person in the temple. Every facet of their experience must be our concern. We are there to serve them. This does not mean to coddle them; it means to care, to be alert, to train with sensitivity—in a word, to respect. In the CC KDK says that the principles of religion are established not by logic and debate but by the behavior of the devotees. When leaders model respect, students learn respect because they feel loved, valued and protected, never exploited.
After 30 years of failure, success! A living laboratory to make mistakes and learn from them.
This is a typical class; every year we have new students, and our ashrams are nearly always packed.
1. It is not a phenomenon of the hippie era. 2. We must be focused and personally committed. We must apply “organization and intelligence.”
