What is a Game Sense Approach?
• Game Sense Approach (GSA) is a learner centered approach to teaching
and learning.
• GSA allows the students to develop collaboration skills with their peers as
they are required to come up with solutions themselves and problem
solve throughout the game, which develops their cognitive (thinking)
skills.
• Students benefit from the GSA approach as they are given more power
throughout the activities and develop a deeper understanding of the
games.
What is a Game Sense Approach?
• The GSA approach is based upon the Teaching Games For Understanding
(TGFU) model.
• The GSA approach builds on the original TGFU model by Bunker and
Thorpe but is less structured (Pill, 2014).
• The GSA approach relates to the TGFU model as it is learner centered and
focuses on developing the tactical skills of the students through
questioning from the teacher and also interactions within the games.

Using the Game Sense Approach
• Using the GSA approach requires all children to be included and an
inclusive environment is an important part of teaching any subject.
• The students must have the time to explore in these activities as having
the time allows them to problem solve and develop an understanding of
the game that works for them (Townsend, 2007).
• Allowing the children to explore in the activities and the teacher
observing, allows for the opportunity to guide and change or adapt
activities as needed for the students.
The Strengths of a Game Sense Approach
• Using a game sense approach provides many benefits for the students
learning such as:
• Grouping the games into categories with similar play and tactical
problems, allows the students to easily transfer the concepts from
one game to another which allows more time for the students to
grasp a deeper understanding and involvement with the game (Pill,
2014).
• There is a game first approach rather than practice first.
The Strengths of a Game Sense Approach
• It is student centered and therefore there is a higher chance of
maintaining engagement.
• As it allows for inclusion, this boosts confidence of students which
increases motivation and provides the opportunity for a more enjoyable
experience for the students.
• Through the implementation of questioning by the teacher, the students
are able to understand ‘why’ it is being executed. This also provides the
opportunity for students to speak up.
