This document summarizes a wireless sensing network used for gait research. It can continuously and in real-time monitor gait through an on-shoe device, providing three-dimensional motion, position, and foot pressure distribution data. This data is useful for bio-motion study and analyzing the effects of physical therapy on Parkinson's disease patients. The sensor can also be worn on other body parts to capture full-body motion and help handicapped people as a foot controller.

• This platform is based around a series of circuit boards
• Each of them encapsulates design knowledge which can be used in many
different types of projects.
• Six boards are shown as following:
– Master board
• data collection and transmission, 22MIPS processor, 12-bit ADC, 916MHz
transceiver
– IMU board
• Sense acceleration and angular velocity
– A matched pair of sonar receiver and transmitter
• Distance measurements, sending 40 kHz pulse from an omnidirectional transceiver
– Tactile sensor
• Developed for wearable gait lab, four single-ended force-sensitive resistors
– Ambient sensor board
• Sense luminance, temperature, sound, and visual via a camera
– Storage board
• With 1Gbit flash memory chip, input over SPI and output via RS232 connections
