“Wearables are dead, long live wearables!”. The age of the single app experience and the inundation of actionless, fancy charts will dissipate and will ultimately be replaced with life-changing individualized single experiences through the “virtual coach” paradigm. This document’s objective is to identify the challenges consumers and companies are facing and proposing a “Version 1” framework of recommendations to meet or exceed customers’ expectations, enabling profitable long-term relationships for companies. As we are approaching an end to the restrictions associated with COVID-19, it seems a good time to reflect on the disruptions and focus on how technology might be applied to avoid the same situation happening again. It is almost inevitable, in my opinion, that our pre-COVID lifestyles and travel/mobility will almost certainly lead to future pandemics and whilst the lessons learnt in fast-tracking clinical research and development of new drugs and vaccines will help to mitigate the situation, it does not alter the pressing need to shift focus from cure to prevention.
Digital Health and Digital Therapeutics technologies can help to protect the future sustainability of public health services through personal physical and mental health management whilst Digital Medicine will enable early detection of clinical problems and a range of innovative new solutions for cures.

Technological Advances
Throughout history there have been great advances in technology, but as of recent are the advances that are geared towards health. There are now many different types of technology to help track wellness for you. Some examples may be watches or apps to use to keep you on track. I will discuss how the different lenses relate to this topic and connect them to wellness.
When we look through a historical lens at technology related to wellness, we have made leaps and bounds in this area. Before you had to go to the doctor to find out what was wrong with you or to track your wellness, not anymore! With recent innovations such as apps to track dietary needs and watches to track movement or heartrate it is easier than ever to stay on top of our health. Let’s look at when you used to go to the doctor and have a nurse manually check your blood pressure. Now they have a machine that can do three different tasks at one time, it can check your blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen levels in your blood. The technological advances allow doctors or nurses to provide better and more efficient care to their patients. In history you had to go to the doctor, or the doctor used to come to you. Now there is apps or hospitals that are doing virtual visits for routine illness to help lessen the spread of illness. Historical we have come a long way in developing technology to help with maintaining wellness.
Humanities is affected using technology for wellness purposes as well. People are connected more and more using technology as well. Through the use of shared health or tracking apps people can connect and challenge one another in their wellness journeys. Also, these apps or tracking systems can also provide information to how people are living their day to day lives. Doctors or healthcare providers can use things such as Bluetooth to track their patients and how they are doing. Modern CPAP machines have the ability to track and tell you and your doctor about your sleep on a daily basis and provide real time results to make any adjustments that may be needed. Humanities is the study of relationships and can play a huge role in our lives, technology only boosts this by helping people to hold others accountable.
When you look at the natural and applied sciences lens in conjunction with technological advances you have to look at how we can affect the environment. Technology allows us to know what is going to happen with the weather and the environment well in advance. Years ago, weather observations were made the eye or ear and plotted on a map, not technology allows us to predict what will happen well before it does. Having this allows us to be able to prepare and have advanced notification for serious incidents and be able to react sooner. Take a tornado as an example, very dangerous and deadly if not warned early. With advances in technology meteorologist are able to look at a storm system and predict if sever weathe.

Humans have been using technology since the earlier times to make their lives easier but that technology has also lead to some side effects such as pollution, industrial wastes, radiations etc. However, technology can also be used to promote pro-environmental behaviors.
Persuasive technology is broadly defined as technology that is designed to change attitudes or behaviors of the users through convincement and social influence, but not through force or oppression. Persuasive technology aims to form a connection between technology and psychology in order to solve environmental issues.

The speech focuses on digital innovation from the point of view of a pharmaceutical company: how technology can integrate the offer of drugs and therapeutic solutions for the healthcare and well-being of citizens. Last year the app I-nonni was presented as a Sanofi start-up project with the primary goal of connecting the older adults with relatives and health professionals, such as doctors and pharmacists, in an easy and effective way. This year the progress in the services offered will be presented, as well as a study proving the effectiveness of the digital fitness tool that we developed with the aim of training the cognitive abilities of older adults (and not only).

The Future of Digital Medicine in the Aging SocietyDavid Wortley
Global Health and sustainable improvements in the
well‑being of humans are seriously threatened by two
societal phenomena.
The aging society
Across the globe, falling birth rates and increased life
expectancies have led to significant increases in the
percentage of citizens aged over 65 years compared
to the younger working population. The increased
life expectancies have, at least in part, been a result of
improvements in health care, and the diagnosis and
treatment of diseases and medical conditions that have
traditionally caused premature death.
Impact of lifestyle and medical advances on
causes of death
Medical advances have all but eradicated many of the traditional
causes of death from communicable diseases with a
consequent growth in morbidity resulting from lifestyle
choices and behaviors.
The issue with lifestyle‑related conditions is the behaviors
such as sedentary lifestyles and poor diets adopted early
in life have a major and cumulative effect in later life
resulting in diabetes and cardiovascular problems which
require often expensive interventions and high levels of
cost to public health services.
The role of digital technologies in medicine,
health, and well‑being
Digital technologies have undoubtedly had a major
impact on medicine both in diagnostics and treatment.
Modern digital scanning, artificial intelligence, big
data analytics, human‑computer interfaces, robotics,
and 3D visualization technologies have all helped to
not only increase our understanding of the physiology
of the human body and enabled early detection of
medical conditions but also they have contributed
to increasingly more targeted and personalized
interventions.
However, set against these positive benefits of digital
medicine and health technologies is the impact of
technologies which reduce the daily physical and cognitive
challenges that have throughout history constantly
exercised our bodies and minds and in the process, given
us the active lifestyles needed to maintain health and
well‑being...........

Digital Health Applications and Hospitals of the FutureDavid Wortley
The National Healthcare Expo 2019 Conference was held in late November in Milton Keynes. In my presentation in the eHealth Track (presentation and video links included in this article), I outlined 3 points to think about when looking at the future of Digital Technologies in Healthcare and Medicine.
The digital technologies which will have the biggest impact on global health will not have been designed by or for medical professionals
Consumer technologies, sometime referred to as “general” technologies are being applied across almost all sectors of business and society for purposes which were not originally envisaged or intended. The health sector is a good example in which all of the technologies shown below are now being applied for health and well-being :-
• Smartphones
• Fitness Trackers
• Whatsapp and WeChat
• Virtual Reality Headsets
• Panoramic Cameras
• Artificial Intelligence
• Sensors
With the possible exception of fitness trackers, none of these technologies were developed by or for medical professionals. There are some profound implications, not only for the future of healthcare but also for the roles and responsibilities of health professionals and citizens. The graph below shows how digital technologies for health are shifting from expensive, stand-alone, proprietary technologies to smart, connected, consumer technologies.

Gamification is NOT all about Badges, Points and Rewards
Gamification is gaining increasing amounts of attention and credibility as a concept that can be applied to achieve goals and objectives in many “non play/entertainment” sectors. Much of what is being offered as “Gamification Strategies” focuses on the use of badges, points and rewards, giving the impression that successful Gamification is about offering rewards, incentives and recognition. This document is intended to challenge that notion and to offer a more comprehensive understanding of how and why Gamification is so significant in today’s digital age.
Gamification has been described as the use of game mechanics in non-game contexts. This makes the assumption that there is some differentiation between games and other everyday activities. Whilst the above definition seems intuitively understandable because it somehow implies that games allow “risk-free, trial and error” development that is missing in work or other situations, I believe that every human activity should be viewed as a game if we are to develop the skills and understanding to apply Gamification strategies successfully.
The first point to make in the argument that games are an essential part of every human activity is that we frequently use the words “games” and “players” in “non-game” contexts. Examples include “BP is a major player in the oil industry” or “He/she is playing mind-games”. I have heard the expression “benign manipulation” used to describe gamification but the reality is that we all use gamification skills every day of our lives in order to have some control or influence over our lives.

Transfer to immortality - A Sustainable Singularity Solution ?David Wortley
I delivered this presentation at the Sci-Fi 2018 conference organised by Eurosis and taken place at the Novotel in Bruges. It considers the potential reality of Singularity and the option of immortality through a human/machine blend. The presentation describes legislation to protect environmental resources in which humans have to be put to sleep on their 100th birthday in a scenario which combines transfer of all your human experiences, relationships, traits and knowledge into an avatar who is paired with the chosen "love of your life" by a mixture of AI, your emotions and a global audience who can share your life memories and feelings and vote for a person. It challenges by example to imagine what memories the audience would retrieve on their last day.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Wearable technologies, Digital Health and Commercial Opportunities
The Dawn of the PDHA (Personal Digital Health Assistant)
Wearable Technologies showcased by Royal College of Arts Students at Imperial College
The last few weeks have seen some interesting developments and product announcements which signpost the increasingly
disruptive nature of Internet of Things (IOT) and associated technologies. These developments not only illustrate the massive
commercial opportunities that will arise from wireless sensor technologies linked to mobile applications and big data visualisation,
they also demonstrate the multi-disciplinary nature of innovation which has too often been neglected by the silo-based
mentalities and hierarchical organisational structures that still exist in certain sectors of business and society.
Some stark examples of multi-disciplinary innovation in wearable technologies have been presented to me over the last few
weeks. I have often told the story of how my milkman’s self-taught part time web development activities opened my eyes to the
potential of the internet to empower individuals to innovate ideas which knowledge professionals have been blind to and there
are many examples of how creative people in art, performance and music have developed technology solutions which ICT
professionals would never imagine. Over the last couple of weeks, I have seen further evidence of exciting applications of
technology developed by students at the Royal College of Arts.
Whilst visiting the Imperial College Business School as part of my hosting of Professor J-Young An from Korea (see later article), I
saw a showcase display of wearable technologies designed as projects by students at the Royal College of Arts. There were many
innovative product ideas showcased there and I have posted a series of pictures on my Flickr site at
https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidwortley/sets/72157656049225432
The Doppel Wearable Mood Setter Linked to Heart Rate
The following week whilst I was at the IORMA Summer Reception in London, I was introduced to two young students who
graduated from the Royal College of Arts and had developed a new wearable technology which they are launching using
Kickstarter funding. The product is called Doppel and its concept is based on using your heart rate measurement to activate a
device on your wrist that uses personalised musical vibrations to adjust your mood and help you relax whilst stressed and give you
a boost when you are tired. I was very impressed by the idea and you can find out more about Doppel by visiting their web site at
:- http://www.tturquoise.com/
The Doppel is also an example of how these technologies are establishing wearable devices as a gateway to many different types
of commercial application. Wearable sensor based technologies are moving beyond activity and health monitoring devices
designed to visualise your personal health status and thus guide you to better lifestyle activities. They are now entering a phase of
more proactive applications which translate your personal data into activities and transactions that use artificial intelligence to
“assist” you in a personal way. This next generation of PDHAs will be able (like Doppel) to enable you to adjust your body
metabolism either manually or automatically to deal with stress and tiredness. Devices like these will begin to compete with
interventions based on drugs or supplements.
Finally, these last few weeks have seen the launch of Apple Pay which allows you to use your mobile phone or Apple Watch to
conduct contactless payments. This development is a recognition that personal technologies such as mobile phones and lifestyle
trackers are beginning to be accepted as secure devices that help to verify commercial transactions.

Visit by Professor Ji-Young An from Inje University in Seoul
Professor Ji-Young An’s Meetings during her visit to the UK
It was my pleasure to host Professor Ji-Young An from Inje University in Seoul as my guest for a few days on her first visit to
England. I had previously met Professor An through webinars organised by the APAN network which led us to meet face to face on
my last visit to Seoul. She was in Europe on a visit to the World Health Organisation in Geneva so I suggested she could extend her
stay in Europe to visit England for the first time.
Professor An is a specialist in health informatics and healthcare service design at Inje University which owns and runs 5 hospitals in
Korea. During her stay, I arranged several productive meetings beginning with a visit to Coventry University where we met
Professor Ala Szczepura who is the Interim Executive Director at the Centre for Technology Enabled Health Research and Professor
Pam Kato, Director of the Serious Games Institute.
Later in the week we also met Professor James Barlow at Imperial College Business School and Dave Taylor of Imperial College who
is based at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington. Professor Barlow is President of the International Academy for Design and Health and
a keynote speaker at their recent annual conference in Hong Kong which Professor An attended. The final meeting was with Tre
Azam, the CEO and Founder of MyndPlay with whom I am collaborating on various projects linked to the use of biosensors for
wellbeing and personal health management.
If you would like to explore collaboration with Professor An and Inje University in Seoul, contact me at david@gaetss.com.
Lifestyle Devices Update - Jawbone UP3 Health Tracker & Withings Activite
The New Jawbone and Withings Activity Trackers
There have been recent product announcements/updates from 2 of the leading developer of activity trackers and personal health
management devices. I have been using both Jawbone and Withings products extensively over the last 2 years and regard them as
industry leaders in this sector. The new Jawbone UP device has additional sensors to provide enhanced monitoring of the heart
and sleep patterns. The Jawbone UP application is the one I use on a daily basis because it also allows me to easily track diet and
nutrition intake as well as providing a “smart coach” facility that uses basic gamification techniques to influence my lifestyle
behaviours.
I have also been using the Withings Pulse device which has now been superseded by the Withings Activite which has a form factor
more like a traditional watch and now has capabilities to track swimming activities.
