01
DEFINITION OF VOLCANO
What is a volcano and its main external
parts?
02
VOLCANO
❏ A volcano is an opening in the earth’s crust through which
lava, volcanic ashes, and gases escape.
❏ A volcano is also a mountain formed by accumulation of
eruptive products.
➢ Volcanoes erupt when molten
rocks called magma rises to
the surface. Magma is formed
when the earth’s mantle melts.
Melting may happen where
tectonic plates are pulling
apart or where one plate is
pushed down under another.
❏ The summit is the highest point, there is an opening which
may either be a crater or a caldera.
❏ The slopes are the sides or flanks of a volcano that radiate
from the main or central vent. Slopes vary in gradient
depending on the intensity of the volcano’s eruptions and
the materials that are expelled.
❏ The base of the volcano is the lowest part, bottom, or the
supporting layer of a volcano.
CLASSIFICATION OF VOLCANOES
How do we classify volcanoes?
03
VOLCANOES ARE CLASSIFIED INTO THREE TYPES:
Active Volcanoes
Inactive/Dormant Volcanoes
Extinct Volcanoes
❏ Have a recent history of eruptions; they are likely to erupt
again. Active volcanoes are those that have a record of
eruption within the last 600 years or those that erupted
10,000 years ago based on analyses of their materials
ACTIVE VOLCANOES
❏ Have not erupted for a very long time but may erupt at a
future time. Inactive/dormant volcanoes are those that have
not erupted for the last 10, 000 years and their physical
form is being changed by agents of weathering and erosion
through formation of deep and long gullies
INACTIVE/ DORMANT VOLCANOES
❏ Volcanoes that are not expected to erupt in the future
EXTINCT VOLCANOES
1. Are all the volcanoes found in the same location?
2. Which of the volcanoes had the most number of eruptions
Least number of eruptions?
No record of eruptions?
3. How will you classify the volcanoes that have records of
eruptions
4. How will you classify volcanoes with no record of eruption?
5. In your own words, differentiate an active volcano from an
inactive one.
GUIDE QUESTIONS
VOLCANOES BASED ON SHAPES
Three types of volcanoes based on their shapes
04
VOLCANOES BASED ON SHAPES
THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF VOLCANOES BASED ON THEIR
SHAPES:
Shield Volcanoes
Cinder Volcanoes
Composite Volcanoes
Shield volcanoes are formed by the accumulation of lava that
oozes out from the volcano. An example of this type is the
Mauna Loa in Hawaii.
Cinder cones, on the other hand, are built from ejected lava
fragments. They have a steep slope, wide crater and are the
most abundant of the three major volcano types. One example
of this type is the Paricutin in Mexico
Composite cones or strato volcanoes are large, nearly perfect
sloped structure formed from alternate solidification of both
lava and pyroclastic deposits. One perfect example of this type
of cone is our Mayon Volcano.
COMPOSITE VOLCANO
3. CINDER VOLCANO
SHIELD VOLCANO
LET’S MASTER
Master the concept of volcanoes. Generalize/Sum
up.
05
❏ Volcanoes are vents, or openings in Earth's crust, that
release ash, gases and steam, and hot liquid rock called
lava.
❏ Most of the world's volcanoes are found around the edges
of tectonic plates, both on land and in the oceans.
❏ A volcano can be considered as an active or inactive
❏ A volcano is cone-shaped. It has an opening at the top (or
in some case, on the sides). Hot thick cloud of gas, molten
rocks, ash forming a cauliflower-shaped cloud comes out of
its opening.
❏ It usually has a summit, slope
and base. At the summit, there is
an opening which may either be
a crater or a caldera. A crater is a
funnel-shaped opening at the top
of a volcano while a caldera is
formed when a part of the wall
collapses following an explosive
eruption.
1.What is the importance of knowing the parts of a
volcano?
2.Why do we need to know how they are formed?
3.How do volcanic eruptions affect society?
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS
1. A volcano is ________________.
2. A volcano is formed when _________________.
3. The different parts of volcano are _____, _____, and
_______.
4. The three classification of volcanoes are _____ ,______
and _____.
5. The three volcanic cones are _____, ______ and ______.

  • 24. VOLCANOES BASED ON SHAPES Three types of volcanoes based on their shapes 04
  • 25. VOLCANOES BASED ON SHAPES THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF VOLCANOES BASED ON THEIR SHAPES: Shield Volcanoes Cinder Volcanoes Composite Volcanoes
  • 26.
  • 27. Shield volcanoes are formed by the accumulation of lava that oozes out from the volcano. An example of this type is the Mauna Loa in Hawaii.
  • 28. Cinder cones, on the other hand, are built from ejected lava fragments. They have a steep slope, wide crater and are the most abundant of the three major volcano types. One example of this type is the Paricutin in Mexico
  • 29. Composite cones or strato volcanoes are large, nearly perfect sloped structure formed from alternate solidification of both lava and pyroclastic deposits. One perfect example of this type of cone is our Mayon Volcano.

  • 31. LET’S MASTER Master the concept of volcanoes. Generalize/Sum up. 05
  • 32. ❏ Volcanoes are vents, or openings in Earth's crust, that release ash, gases and steam, and hot liquid rock called lava. ❏ Most of the world's volcanoes are found around the edges of tectonic plates, both on land and in the oceans. ❏ A volcano can be considered as an active or inactive
  • 33. ❏ A volcano is cone-shaped. It has an opening at the top (or in some case, on the sides). Hot thick cloud of gas, molten rocks, ash forming a cauliflower-shaped cloud comes out of its opening.
  • 34. ❏ It usually has a summit, slope and base. At the summit, there is an opening which may either be a crater or a caldera. A crater is a funnel-shaped opening at the top of a volcano while a caldera is formed when a part of the wall collapses following an explosive eruption.
  • 35. 1.What is the importance of knowing the parts of a volcano? 2.Why do we need to know how they are formed? 3.How do volcanic eruptions affect society? ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS
