1. Fungi
• Saprotrophic
– Decomposers
– Extra cellular digestion
• Mycelium: fungal body
– Composed of many hyphae (individual chains of
cells)

2. Black Bread Mold (Zygomycota)
• Asexual and sexual reproduction
Look at zygospores (diploid
reproductive structures) with
prepared slides under
microscope

3. Sac fungi (Ascomycota)
• Many cause disease
– Example: yeast infection
• Observe yeast demo
– Single celled
– Asexual reproduction through budding
• Aspergillus slide
• Penicillium slide
• Look for conidiospores: asexual spores
– Form on stalks called conidiophores
– Individual spores are conidia

5. Club fungi (Basidomycota)
• Cap: basidocarp
– Forms basidospores at the
end of basidia (stalks)
• Typically reproduces sexually

slides but do not dissect

fungi and protista (algae)
• Three different shapes:
– Foliose: leaf-like
– Fruticose: shrubby appearance
– Crustose: flattened
• View thallus slide
– Find both fungal
and algae cells
