MW18 Presentation: Sustaining The Heartbeat Of Your Museum’s Content StrategyMuseWeb Foundation
By Eric Holter, Cuberis, USA, Nick Faber, Cuberis, USA
Access to quick publishing tools like blogs and social media should make populating your website with great content a breeze. Add to that the digitization of your museum's collections, and the options are virtually limitless. But that's also the problem. With so many content opportunities, it's easy to suffer from choice paralysis. One of the keys to knowing what content to produce at any given time is to develop a habitual and sustainable content strategy. A benefit of cultivating a viable content strategy flows from a surprising observation made by Wired's Chris Anderson in 2004, when digital retailers began to outsell offline competitors. Without the limitations of a physical store, online retailers could stock plenty of obscure releases along with "the hits". And it turned out that there was a profitable market for these niche titles. When you tallied the sales from the multitude of niche titles, the total dwarfed the sales from the hits. Anderson dubbed this occurrence the "Long Tail" effect. Museums, like brick and mortar retailers, can only put the "hits" on display. The long tail of objects in the vaults remain out of reach to your visitors. But, thanks to digital collections, the most obscure and specific items can reach their audiences, too. In this workshop you will learn how enrich your museum’s "Long Tail" with content that fulfills your museum's mission while contributing to its margin. We will discuss the following: * Building a content strategy that exploits the Long Tail effect for museums * Establishing proper expectations for how Long Tail content will perform and build value * Examples from museums of leveraging Long Tail content * How Long Tail content strategies can enrich a museum’s featured content (content related to events, exhibitions, and scholarship)

How to Make a Field Mandatory in Odoo 17Celine George
In Odoo, making a field required can be done through both Python code and XML views. When you set the required attribute to True in Python code, it makes the field required across all views where it's used. Conversely, when you set the required attribute in XML views, it makes the field required only in the context of that particular view.

Thanks for the introduction
I work with the Community Engagement team at SLQ made up of the Visitor Experience and Signature Programs teams.
The signature program team is responsible for the programming and project management of Fun Palace
Today I'm going to run through what we did at State Library in 2015, what's coming up at this year's Fun Palace how we supported public libraries in 2015 and what we are doing in 2016. A quick look at an international collaboration and some information about how you could get involved.
I will also let you know some of the good things that happened and what we would like to improve on.
So what is a Fun Palace?
Fun Palaces are free, welcoming events combining arts and sciences, made for and with local people.
They originated in the UK from an idea conceived in the 1960s
The Fun Palaces campaign is an ongoing movement for culture at the heart of the community, it is about community engagement and creating a sense of community.
They can be held anywhere at libraries, museums, town halls, theatres, swimming pools or your own back yard.
You can make them are as large or small you want.
They are always held in the first weekend in October.
Parkes were the first library in Australia to run a Fun Palace in 2014
State Library got on board in 2015
Over 1300 participants came along on the day and were family groups. I thought we were being ambitious setting 1000 as a target and had many people letting me know that we wouldn't reach the target
We did have the advantage of a new children’s park being opened at South Bank parklands which people came from. Even in Queensland people left to go home and watch the AFL grandfinal. But we got a resurgence for the end science show.
We had $10,000 to spend on the event with just under a 1/3 going towards staff salaries and overtime for the day, just under 1/3 on marketing costs and the remainder towards paying for programming and sundries like t-shirts
The $3,000 marketing budget was spent on an online ‘what’s on’ in Brisbane site Must Do Brisbane, Radio advertising, printed fliers and Facebook advertising.
Our visitor exit surveys that we do across the year indicate that our visitors main way of finding out what’s going on in through Facebook and print media.
We were pleased to receive $12,000 free media with an approximate reach of 200K
Volunteers helped us out on the day with support for activities, program, information and directional queries and getting consent forms.
Edge and Signature Program led with programming contributions from Collection Preservation and Literacy and Young Peoples’ Services.
18 individual activities were conducted. I'll show some of the key events
The focus of fun palace is to be a community created event, unfortunately even with a lot of contacts made we didn't get community run programming like we anticipated which we intended to improve on for 2016.
One of our popular activities was making your own periscope. An SLQ design activity.
This met our goal of families working together to make a product to take-away.
This activity was not suitable for younger children due to the hot glue gun meaning sometimes children had to watch while carer did the work.
Some resourceful kids used their periscope to watch the Science show at the end so they could see over the crowd.
Kids Circus climbing as building blocks, (SLQ Fun Palace 2015)
Vulcana kids circus ran workshops where children’s participated in circus activities
A popular activity for all ages with demand outweighing capacity meaning disappointment for some young people.
Families getting busy with paper crafting, (SLQ Fun Palace, 2015).
Participants could also participate in building a MegaVirus. Design by our in-house scientist from the Edge Dr Peter Musk the mega virus was crafted from paper, and was grown throughout the day.
The program was largely focussed toward providing free, simple, drop-in activities across the day and it was easy for all ages to participate in. with parts of the virus being for different ages to make
The virus grew throughout the day
Mother and Sons explore the anatomy of a book with SLQ Conservator, Rachel.
The team from the conservation lab did an activity where participants would make their own Lab Journal to take home. There was so much interest in this activity that they ran out of supplies, were exhausted and had to pack up early and go home to recover. It did take a fair bit on convincing to get them back this year ☺
Aviator Mick Byrne (Edge) with Air Gliders
The Edge team ran several activities in their space including Air Surfing with Walkalong Gliders. Again another activity that kids could do with their parents and then got to take their gliders home.
Giant scrabbled was very popular with families and our regular library visitors.
Of course what would a day about science and art be without coding and robotics. There were a variety of activities across the day with several organisations showcasing their products, activities and services to participants. Some of these were done at no costs to SLQ
The day ended with a science show by Science Steve and was a fantastic way to finalise the day.
We can share any of the SLQ designed activity resources
We are again undertaking a Fun Palace for 2016. This year we anticipate it will be just as busy so we will take our learnings from last year and ensure we have a few more staff and a dedicated information booth to help with directional and information queries
Our Creative in Residence Matt Finch and our event coordinator Emma Constance have been networking with library teams and universities to encourage state-wide participation. We hope have over 35 Fun Palaces around Queensland
This year we spent more time looking for community partnerships
This year the conservation team is running a book binding activity and our Edge team is doing a workshop on how to use household products to create science experiments
The Signature program team. Is conducting an art project around interpreting your family history
This year you can help design a robot or bridge with engineer and book author, Andrew King (from Engibear).
We have partnered up with. Book author Andrew King from Engibear fame, he is running workshops on bridge building and robot design. SLQ has supported Andrew with his book and workshops so he is doing this free of charge.
South East Queensland water is also running workshop for us this year
(Street Science stage show)
The day will end with a stage performance from Street Science.
In both 2015 and 2016 we provided grants for public libraries to run a Fun Palace
Via expression of interest we offered grants to libraries to run a Fun Palace at their library
Bubbles at Gold Coast Library Fun Palace 2015
Bubbles at Gold Coast Fun Palace
Australian Bush Buddies at Scenic Rim Fun Palace
Scenic Rim offered the Bush Buddies experience
This year we wanted to give more libraries the opportunity to participate
We decided to provide inspiration by providing a mystery box of art and science goodies
Not only is the kit designed to be used for Fun Palace we wanted the majority of items to be able to be used again - a more sustainable model.
The kit includes books that could be used for inspiration, added to the collection or used as prizes on the day
We can't wait to hear how the mystery boxes get used
We also have an activity on the main Fun Palaces web page
The online comic maker was developed by crew members from the Edge
For those of you who are good with code, the code for this comic maker is available on GITHUB and we are happy to share, you could make your own characters
So are your keen?
The criteria is – run on 1st weekend in October, art and science and community focused.
For programming make connection with people that can help you
Your local science teacher
Community organisations
Think outside the square even a baker making bread is science related
Do your staff have a secret talent that they could turn into an activity or show other people
Apply for grants – for Queenslanders there’s some Advance Queensland funding at the moment. Also if you are regional think of destination grants from your tourism authority
