Brief Resume of Course Instructor:
Prof. Dr. Nawaz Sharif, USA
Nawaz Sharif has earned a bachelor of science degree in Mechanical
Engineering (B.Sc.M.E.) from the East Pakistan University of
Engineering and Technology (Bangladesh, December 1964); a master’s
degree in Engineering Administration (MEA) from the George
Washington University (USA, February 1967); and a doctoral degree in
Industrial Engineering (PhD, Operations Research major, Statistics
minor) from Texas A&M University (USA, January 1970). Nawaz
Sharif, starting as a Lecturer, became an Assistant Professor in the
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET),
Dhaka, during 1965 and 1972. Nawaz Sharif then worked as an
Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, Professor, and Chair
Professor of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok,
Thailand, during periods: 1973-1983 and 1990-1997. He was Vice
President for Academic Affairs of AIT (1981-1982). Nawaz Sharif also
served the United Nations for six years as Director of the Asian and
Pacific Center for Transfer of Technology (APCTT), a regional
institution of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the
Pacific (UN-ESCAP) for the period 1984--1989. Nawaz Sharif returned
to USA in 1997, and worked with the University of Maryland (UMUC)
as a Professor and Doctoral Program Director for the period 2000--
2007. Currently, Nawaz Sharif is a Principal Consultant in a
knowledge-based technology enterprise, and teaches in a number of
universities (as Adjunct Professor) in USA and Asia. Starting from
1976 to present, Nawaz Sharif has worked (on a contract basis) as an
international consultant for Science and Technology projects,
sponsored by the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, UNDP,
UNIDO, UNESCO. He has conducted numerous workshops and
seminars in many Asian countries. Nawaz Sharif regularly taught post-
graduate level courses in areas of Operations Research, Decision
Science, Technology Management, and Project Management. As a
Professor, he has supervised 70 master’s theses and 20 doctoral
dissertations during his tenure at AIT and UMUC. He has authored
(and co-authored) over 20 books; and he has over 100 technical papers
published in peer reviewed professional journals and international
conference proceedings. Nawaz Sharif, as a researcher, is the originator
of many practical technology management concepts related to
technology-based global market competition for socio-economic
development: technological system components (technoware,
humanware, inforware, orgaware and cysnetware); technological
capacities (capabilities for cost-reduction, and competencies for value-
addition); technological innovation infrastructure (R&D type-zone
triangles, and supportive intermediaries); and business growth
roadmap related technological strategies (technology extender,
technology exploiter, technology follower, and technology leader).

TWO WEEK EVENING COURSE ON

This interactive short course is designed for professionals,
having wide-ranging technological and management
backgrounds, through the fundamental theories and practices of
successfully managing technological innovation in
organizations. This practice-integrated course will draw on
interdisciplinary theories from both technological and
managerial fields of studies. This intensive course will
specifically focus on how technological innovation management
drives the long-term competitiveness of enterprises operating in
the current global socio-economic setting. One basic objective of
this short course is to help participants comprehend various
conceptual frameworks for managing technological resources,
technological capabilities, technological competencies, and
technological strategies for sustainable growth and renewal of
their enterprises. Participants will also learn the fundamentals of
venture capital, knowledge management, intellectual property
rights, and product-process lifecycle time-lines vis-à-vis various
innovation types.

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be
able to:
• Recognize the significance and impact of
advancements in enterprise utilized technologies,
and understand the increasing complexity and
rising risks of mismanagements in terms of
technological innovation initiatives in different

the fundamental theories, concepts and principles
of technological innovation in enterprises under
various operating conditions.
• Critically analyze interdisciplinary issues and
develop applicable frameworks for technological
innovations that will lead to productivity gain
driven competitive advantage.
• Develop integrated strategies and operational plans
for enhancing organizational strengths and
reducing weaknesses while leveraging external
opportunities and mitigating threats.
• Evaluate and correctly choose technological
innovation management tools and techniques for
achieving sustainable growth while adhering to
environmental-ethical responsibilities.
• Plan, collect, and analyze data and information to
design a technological innovation project for a
business unit of an enterprise, which is of
particular interest to the participant.
• Take away a number of frameworks, study
templates and guideline documents which will help
them implement technological innovation
endeavors in their organizations.

TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION IN ORGANIZATIONS” will be held
at Bangladesh Institute of Management (BIM), Dhaka from 01–09th
November,
2013 in which you are invited to send nomination(s) from your organization.
Please find enclosed a copy of brochure giving details of the course to enable
you in selecting suitable nominee(s). This course is being offered for the first
time by BIM. From preliminary consultations, it appears that it is a topic of
much interest in the current business world. However, based upon the request
of the instructor, for effective interaction during the practice sessions,
enrollment in this short-course will be restricted to a maximum of 25
participants. You are requested to send nomination(s) as early as possible, but
not later than 24th
