As designers, we sometimes find ourselves on a knife edge between user needs and business goals. It can be tempting to fall back to “dark patterns” - processes designed to trick users - because they are a shortcut to results. However, the use of dark patterns isn’t conducive to a good night’s sleep. Most of us want to find solutions that don’t resort to deceiving users. This talk will explore alternatives to infamous and common dark patterns, with a focus on how we can use psychological principles and persuasive design techniques to meet goals through encouragement rather than deception.

UX + BA: Working Together In Harmony [updated]Jacklyn Burgan
Talk given at Web Afternoon: UX Edition on August 28, 2015.
By combining the efforts of business analysis and user experience design, building efficient, easy to use software that achieves the goals of both the business and the users is easier. User Experience and Business Analysis are two disciplines that apply analysis and design thinking during the product and software development process. Both roles are unique and the people that fill them have different strengths, but often times the roles overlap. In this talk, I'll explain how I worked through UX/BA clashes, what I learned from those experiences and provide you with new strategies to take back to your workplace that will help you to improve the collaboration across your teams and ultimately create a better product.
Creating a backlog of user stories is pretty straight forward but it doesn't help you when it comes to decisions like what to build first, how to prioritize and groom the backlog, how to scope and plan the project, and how to visualize progress. The traditional backlog is simply too flat and often too long to help you see the bigger picture and make good decisions. User Story Mapping helps simplify all of these common project issues. By adding a third dimension to your backlog, your team will make better decisions about priorities, scope, and planning while improving your ability to visualize progress.
In this practical session I’ll cover the basics of user story mapping before walking you through case studies of how our teams are using this approach and the results we are achieving. I'll show you the before, during, and after pictures from several projects so that you can understand how our maps progress during the projects and how we use them to influence iterative development, promote good decision making, and visualize priorities, plans, scope and progress.

An overview about what UX design is, for a mixture of tech, support and business people (tough mix!).
There are two main points I wanted to get across: 1. UX design is not just about usabllity (and Jakob Nielsen) 2. UX design is a rigorous process (not magic and guesswork).
If you have any feedback about how to make this presentation better, I'd be happy to hear it.
UX Strategy - the secret sauce that defines the pixie dustEric Reiss
My opening keynote at UX Riga, 2016
UX strategy is about analyzing an organization’s business strategy and outlining what needs to be done from a UX perspective to ensure that the goals of the business strategy are achieved.
In brief, UX strategy is the glue that binds the company vision (goals) with the day-to-day UX tactics (execution). Without a clear UX strategy, it is entirely possible to design killer UX concepts, yet fail miserably in the marketplace. That happens a lot.
This talk aims to help companies and designers avoid costly yet easily avoidable pitfalls.
Competitive Analysis: Strategic UX Spy Games - Lyle KantrovichUXPA International
A Competitive Analysis is a great way UX teams can benchmark, generate ideas, learn about users, and stretch their thinking about design and UX strategy. A UX-centric competitive analysis is very different than what you’ll find outlined in any business book. This presentation outlines an approach for conducting competitive analysis even if your company or product “has no competitors”. This session will show you what a competitive analysis is, why it’s useful, when to do one, how to do it, and what the deliverable should include. You’ll also learn how a competitive analysis can help reinvigorate your organization’s focus on UX.
Topic: UI/UX DESIGN IN AGILE PROCESS
Why do we integrate design into our Agile process?
As we all know, the Agile Manifesto is well-received and successfully adopted as it is today thanks to the 12 underpinning principles. While “good design” is one main reason that “enhances agility”, “Agile processes promote sustainable development”.
At Axon Active, it’s important for us to do everything Agile and work with one another collaboratively in Collaboration Model. It gets people on the same page, makes everyone engage more with the product, encourages them to share more creative ideas, and gives them the flexibility they need to improve themselves.
Indeed, Designers and Developers can collaborate more closely and effectively, and subsequently integrating design into Agile process will yield numerous benefits.
For that reason, Scrum Breakfast Da Nang this October will be the very chance for you to learn:
• How to successfully integrate design into Agile process in practice
• How different Collaboration Model is from traditional model
• The benefits of Collaboration Model when done correctly

This workshop presents an accessible framework for understanding sketching to help communication, understanding, and problem solving -- particularly during a design process that includes multiple roles (that don't always speak the same language).
I propose, not only that sketching helps bridge gaps in communication and get to a deeper level of understanding, but also that every kind of sketching activity falls into one of three categories; thinking, talking, and showing.
In this workshop, for each type of sketching we cover:
- Who it helps
- What it is
- When it can help
- Why you don't need to "know how to draw" to use it
- How to be prepared to use it
You don’t even need to know how to “draw” to learn and apply the methods covered here. After attending this session you will be more comfortable with and better prepared to recognize opportunities where sketching can be used to increase communication and understanding with clients, stakeholders, coworkers, as well as all by yourself, as you work through problems and come up with solutions.

“Your brand is what people say about you when you’re not in the room.” (Jeff Bezos)
Today’s markets and products are changing more rapidly than ever before. As complexity and digitization advance, traditional brand and marketing models can’t keep pace. Increasing complexity leads to the atomization of brands. With the fragmentation of touch points, brands now compete everywhere – and increasingly in close interaction with their fans.
In the Experience Economy customers have shifted from being passive consumers to active participators. Experiences must be as finely crafted and precision-engineered as any other product. The new paradigm for designing those experiences is customer-centricity which is the focus of a new experience management approach (XD) that brings user, customer and brand experience in a holistic correlation.
How do we develop something new? It means exploring unchartered territory and reaching beyond existing patterns, reaching beyond traditional brand style guides. This challenge requires an “elastic brand” - that can react and deliver tailored promises.

This presentation was part of a workshop hosted by WomenTechIceland and Huawei. The WomenTechIceland community is full of brilliant people with great ideas who have a desire to make a positive impact. This workshop focused on how to turn these ideas into great new projects or companies, using common tools and frameworks like the business model canvas, objectives and key results (OKRs) and key performance indicators (KPIs) that align ideas to actions for positive change.
Attendees got an overview of the various tools and frameworks, as well as what to consider to move from idea to project.
Guðrún Ragnarsdóttir, Co-founder of Strategia, led the workshop. Guðrún has over 25 years of experience leading strategy implementation and change management within various companies and government from the executive to board level.
