This document discusses how having close friendships and social networks at work can improve employee engagement and innovation. It notes that employees who have a best friend at work are seven times more likely to be engaged in their jobs, while those without a best friend only have a 1 in 12 chance of being engaged. Developing inclusive leadership that motivates employees and increases their loyalty can help foster these important workplace relationships.
7 Ways Generations Clash in the WorkplaceWorkfront
Three generations now occupy the workplace--Baby Boomers, Gen X-ers, and Millennials--and each brings its own strengths and weaknesses. But how does each generation view the others? What plusses and minuses is each known for? For our 2015 State of Enterprise Work Report, we set out to answers these questions. The answers might surprise you…
Boost Social Media Productivity by Collaborating with Teammates. Social media doesn't have to feel like a task. Learn a simple idea to collaborate with teammates and boost productivity.

The role of leaders in internal communicationMegan Thomas
While a leader’s presence in the market is likely to be quite evident, the way they communicate internally with their people will not usually be on display. So, if you are an internal comms professional, how do you know if you are on top of best practise approaches and doing a good job supporting your leaders? What does the most effective leadership communication look like?
These questions prompted me to conduct some research and find out what leaders in other organisations were doing. This includes a first ever survey of insights from 79 communicators. I hope these thoughts provide other comms professionals with some useful ideas about how to approach and influence leadership communication in your organisations.

Employee engagement is a huge issue. Disengaged employees cost companies real money in low productivity, high turnover, sick leaves etc. The roots for disengagement go deep in the organisational culture - this means random engagement initiatives have very little effect. They don't permanently address the key drivers of human motivation: the need for autonomy, mastery and purpose (see Daniel Pink's book Drive for more information on this).
While enterprise social networks can't obviously solve all of these, they do offer a surprisingly simple way for people to take ownership of their work and feel more autonomous when the email based communication hierarchy is replaced by a flat, network based communication infrastructure.
Making a business case for an internal social network can be a challenge. This presentation is for people working in internal communications who want to convince their senior executives that an enterprise social network is not about being social - it's about making your organisation more responsive to a changing business environment (by helping employees collaborate and communicate more effectively and facilitating innovation).
In the end it's about making your organisation more productive.

MEET YOUR EDITORIAL ADVISORY BOARD
The global authorities for our profession, the members of the Executive Support Magazine Editorial Board
are experts in their fields, dedicated to ensuring the administrative profession remains at the forefront of
business. Board members regularly share their expertise within the magazine and provide guidance and
inspiration on future topics and issues that are important to administrative professionals around the world.
A New Era
At a recent meeting with a client where we were talking about how they could better utilise their
administrative function, one of the board members asked me whether I felt that an Assistant
could work remotely.
It seemed a strange question. Matthew (my former Executive Assistant) and I worked almost
entirely remotely for nine years, and haven’t we all just spent the last two years doing just that?
Communication, of course, is key. As are the right resources. When I suggested that it wasn’t
necessarily whether an Assistant COULD work from home but rather whether they had the right
tools to do so, the board member realised they hadn’t thought of that. I was astounded. It hadn’t
occurred to them that not everyone had a dedicated space to work from, an ergonomically
friendly chair, or high-speed Wi-Fi.
The latest research from Accenture shows that 83% of employees want the option of hybrid
working moving forwards. In fact, 47% say they would look for another job if their company
didn’t offer a hybrid option.
Employees want the ability to have a flexible schedule, less commuting time and expense
and more time with family. But they also want the space away from distractions, time with
colleagues, better technology, routine and visibility.
And yet for many, there is real anxiety about returning to an office. We worry about safety
because it’s not clear how it’s going to work. Transitions naturally spike our anxiety, and
whenever we have stopped doing something for a period of time, we feel anxious about
returning to it. Our routines have changed, as have our social relationships and boundaries, so
it’s natural to feel a level of anxiety.

The Reality of Engagement: Why I Can’t Get My Employees to CareWorkology
Employee engagement isn't as clear cut as you think. Lee Witcher and Rhonda Boyle walk you through the realities of employee engagement and strategies of driving productivity and happy employees at work.
The feeling of belonging in the workplace is as vital to individuals as it is to organizations — and even more important than pay, according to our recent research. Here’s what matters most to employees when it comes to creating a professional culture of belonging.
A large proportion of our UK workforce is made up of carers. Whether they are caring for children, elderly or disabled relatives, our research has found how stressful and challenging caring for dependents can be. So much so that many carers want to reduce their hours of work or leave their companies as a result of the conflict of demands. We know that different types of carers face different issues and therefore require different support mechanisms from their colleagues, line managers and employers. Not only is getting this right crucial for their wellbeing but it is also fundamental to business success in terms of retaining talented people in the organisation.
This workshop is designed to help organisations understand the key barriers that currently exist in the workplace for carers and how to use hacking to make small changes to the way you work in order to be far more inclusive of parents and carers alike.
In this allegory of employee engagement, we will guide you through the nine most common pitfalls for employee disengagement, and offer strategies to escape them based on the latest industry research and best practices. Most companies struggle to keep employees engaged, happy and on board, but it is all too easy to end up lost in the underworld of disengagement. Step by step, we will deconstruct each level of employee disengagement and offer some practical, actionable suggestions for how to escape it.
Learn how to:
Keep employees on board, happy and fully engaged.
Tear down silos and build a culture of appreciation and gratitude.
Create a culture that aligns employees with company vision and goals.
Outlines the challenges and opportunities for employers with an age diverse workforce. Explores a strategic approach and shares tools and tips that support employers to build engaged and sustainable workforces.
