A watershed is an integrated infrastructure system that provides municipal services through its three pathways of surface water, interflow, and groundwater. An integrated stormwater management planning framework recognizes watersheds as assets and links watershed health to the services provided and supported by local government infrastructure. Protecting and maintaining the three pathways that move rainwater to streams has financial and service implications that should be considered through asset management.

The city's groundwater level rose 2.84m after the northeast monsoon last year due to rainwater harvesting structures. However, the groundwater level has risen but is still not enough to meet the city's growing water needs. While rainwater harvesting helps recharge groundwater by tapping and storing or recharging rainwater, only 10% of rainfall typically recharges underground aquifers as most runs off. Proper maintenance of rainwater harvesting structures needs to be done every five years by cleaning and refilling to keep them functioning effectively.

System 2.0 is now facing sustainability challenges from population growth, pollution, and climate change. System 3.0 aims to address these through a decentralized and integrated approach, using sponge infrastructure to manage stormwater, decentralized wastewater treatment plants, fit-for-purpose water supply including rainwater harvesting and reuse, and ecological zones to restore urban rivers. Recovered nutrients from wastewater can also support sustainable agriculture.

Increased water scarcity is a problem of management rather than availability. Pricing water can make it more accessible, healthy, and sustainable over the long term by incentivizing conservation and funding infrastructure. An effective pricing system considers ability to pay and charges more for higher usage or pollution. Pricing faces limitations like increasing costs for vulnerable groups or farmers but is still important for allocating scarce water resources efficiently and sustainably.

Groundwater is an important natural resource under threat from increasing population and development. Current groundwater models have limitations due to subsurface heterogeneity and lack of data. Assessing climate change impacts on groundwater and managing resources during droughts are significant challenges. Improving data collection and developing more realistic models are needed for effective groundwater management.

“where is it coming from?” (contributing area),
“where is it entering the system?” (recharge area),

The West Harris County Regional Water Authority (WHCRWA) was created in 2001 by the Texas Legislature to facilitate reducing reliance on groundwater and ensuring a long-term supply of surface water for municipal utility districts in its boundaries. The WHCRWA negotiated a surface water contract and has constructed over 50 miles of pipelines and other infrastructure at a cost of over $500 million to meet groundwater reduction mandates of 30% by 2010, 70% by 2020, and 80% by 2030. Water rates have increased over time to fund ongoing construction projects needed to secure water supplies for future demands, though the WHCRWA aims to keep costs as low as possible.
Wider Approach to Incentives for Water Management
Steven N. Schonberger discusses broadening approaches to incentives for sustainable and efficient water management. Incentives have been used for millennia to manage shared water resources and avoid conflicts. Now, incentives come from many interconnected sectors and issues like macroeconomic concerns, the water-energy nexus, and food security policies. A comprehensive approach is needed that addresses scarcity of water, organizational capacity, and accountability in water management through decentralized management, new technologies, and policies that share responsibilities. The ultimate incentive is recognizing that the Earth has limited resources and must be cared for sustainably.

This document discusses water quantity as an indicator of watershed condition. It defines a natural hydrograph as the natural seasonal flows of a river without human influence, and an altered hydrograph as flows that have been changed by dams, diversions or groundwater withdrawals. These changes are measured using streamflow gauges and proxy features to assess the impact on magnitude, duration and timing of flows. The condition is rated as minor if flows are free flowing with limited impacts, moderate if dams mimic natural patterns and extreme flows are unaffected, and high if dams significantly alter seasonal flows and extreme events.
North Carolina watersheds and river basins
A river basin is the land that water flows across or under on its way to a river. It is the drainage area of a river. As a bathtub catches all the water that falls within its sides, a river basin sends all the water falling on the surrounding land into a central river and out to an estuary or the sea.
Saltwater is desalinated to produce water suitable for human consumption or irrigation. The by-product of the desalination process is brine. Desalination is used on many seagoing ships and submarines. Most of the modern interest in desalination is focused on cost-effective provision of fresh water for human use. Along with recycled wastewater, it is one of the few rainfall-independent water sources.
Major types of river network pattern
There are six major types of river network patterns:
1. Dendritic - the most common type with many small tributaries joining into the main river like the branches of a tree.
2. Radial - streams radiate outward from a central high point like a volcano in a radial or circular pattern.
3. Rectangular - develops where rock layers meet at right angles, forming straight stream channels along the joints.
4. Trellis - smaller tributaries enter the main river valley at 90 degree angles, resembling a trellis structure.
5. Parallel - streams flow in the same direction along steep slopes with some flat areas, having few tributaries.
6. Annular - streams follow

The incorporation of a 3DCSM and completion of HRSC provided a tool for enhanced, data-driven, decisions to support a change in remediation closure strategies. Currently, an approved pilot study has been obtained to shut-down the remediation systems (ISCO, P&T) and conduct a hydraulic study under non-pumping conditions. A separate micro-biological bench scale treatability study was competed that yielded positive results for an emerging innovative technology. As a result, a field pilot study has commenced with results expected in nine-twelve months. With the results of the hydraulic study, field pilot studies and an updated risk assessment leading site monitoring optimization cost lifecycle savings upwards of $15MM towards an alternatively evolved best available technology remediation closure strategy.

Water polluted by dyestuffs compounds is a global threat to health and the environment; accordingly, we prepared a green novel sorbent chemical and Physical system from an algae, chitosan and chitosan nanoparticle and impregnated with algae with chitosan nanocomposite for the sorption of Malachite green dye from water. The algae with chitosan nanocomposite by a simple method and used as a recyclable and effective adsorbent for the removal of malachite green dye from aqueous solutions. Algae, chitosan, chitosan nanoparticle and algae with chitosan nanocomposite were characterized using different physicochemical methods. The functional groups and chemical compounds found in algae, chitosan, chitosan algae, chitosan nanoparticle, and chitosan nanoparticle with algae were identified using FTIR, SEM, and TGADTA/DTG techniques. The optimal adsorption conditions, different dosages, pH and Temperature the amount of algae with chitosan nanocomposite were determined. At optimized conditions and the batch equilibrium studies more than 99% of the dye was removed. The adsorption process data matched well kinetics showed that the reaction order for dye varied with pseudo-first order and pseudo-second order. Furthermore, the maximum adsorption capacity of the algae with chitosan nanocomposite toward malachite green dye reached as high as 15.5mg/g, respectively. Finally, multiple times reusing of algae with chitosan nanocomposite and removing dye from a real wastewater has made it a promising and attractive option for further practical applications.

Probiotics are the health-promoting live microbial cells improve host health through gut and brain connection and fighting against harmful bacteria. Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are the two bacterial genera which are considered to be probiotic. These good bacteria are facing challenges of viability. There are so many factors such as sensitivity to heat, pH, acidity, osmotic effect, mechanical shear, chemical components, freezing and storage time as well which affects the viability of probiotics in the dairy food matrix as well as in the gut. Optimizing Post Remediation Groundwater Performance with Enhanced Microbiolog...
Results of geophysics and pneumatic injection pilot tests during 2003 – 2007 yielded significant positive results for injection delivery design and contaminant mass treatment, resulting in permanent shut-down of an existing groundwater Pump & Treat system.
Accessible source areas were subsequently removed (2011) by soil excavation and treated with the placement of Emulsified Vegetable Oil EVO and zero-valent iron ZVI to accelerate treatment of impacted groundwater in overburden and weathered fractured bedrock. Post pilot test and post remediation groundwater monitoring has included analyses of CVOCs, organic fatty acids, dissolved gases and QuantArray® -Chlor to quantify key microorganisms (e.g., Dehalococcoides, Dehalobacter, etc.) and functional genes (e.g., vinyl chloride reductase, methane monooxygenase, etc.) to assess potential for reductive dechlorination and aerobic cometabolism of CVOCs.
In 2022, the first commercial application of MetaArray™ was performed at the site. MetaArray™ utilizes statistical analysis, such as principal component analysis and multivariate analysis to provide evidence that reductive dechlorination is active or even that it is slowing. This creates actionable data allowing users to save money by making important site management decisions earlier.
The results of the MetaArray™ analysis’ support vector machine (SVM) identified groundwater monitoring wells with a 80% confidence that were characterized as either Limited for Reductive Decholorination or had a High Reductive Reduction Dechlorination potential. The results of MetaArray™ will be used to further optimize the site’s post remediation monitoring program for monitored natural attenuation.

Friday Night Forum, Febraury 2016 - Asset management
- 1. Watershed Systems as Infrastructure Assets A watershed is an integrated system, is infrastructure, and must be viewed as an asset that provides municipal services.
- 2. Watershed systems thinking covers the continuum from water supply to drainage, and encompasses human and/or ecosystem needs.
- 3. Where a local government regulates land use, a watershed is an integral part of the drainage infrastructure assets of that local government. More specifically, the three pathways (surface, interflow, groundwater) by which rainfall reaches streams are infrastructure assets. They provide ‘water balance services’. As such, protection and maintenance of the three pathways has financial, level‐of‐service and lifecycle implications for asset management.
- 4. Asset Management for Sustainable Service Delivery: A Framework for BC A modern watershed-based Integrated Stormwater Management Planning (ISMP) Framework makes the link between local government services, the infrastructure that supports the delivery of those services, and watershed health.
- 5. Sustainable Watershed Systems, through Asset Management. A systems approach to watershed health and protection recognizes that actions on the land have consequences for the three pathways to streams and hence the water balance of the watershed. Those consequences are felt in both dry weather and wet weather – too little or too much water, respectively.
- 6. Look at a Watershed as a Whole System: Municipal and Regional Planners and Engineers are learning that the protection of watershed health starts with an understanding of how water gets to a stream from individual sites, how long it takes, and whether there are impacts along the way.
- 7. The need to protect headwater streams and groundwater resources in BC means communities must expand their view from one that looks at the site by itself, to one that considers the site, watershed, stream and aquifer as an integrated system.
- 8. There is a huge opportunity under this new paradigm to working with your local government in a habitat restoration framework to assist with understanding the watershed assets and proposing restorations to ensure the natural assets are, in fact, working properly or can be improved and protected.
