- Welcome to our Free Course Material Development Tools Workshop. I'm Christopher Dobson, Curriculum Content Graphic Illustrator for the Center for Innovative Instruction.
- The objectives for this workshop are as follows... Identify freeware and online production tools Locate and access associated Web sites and online application tools Understand their use for course material development
- Google Docs is an online application suite that allows you to create and share your documents, drawings, forms, presentations, and spreadsheets This suite of applications provides many of the same features that some of the most common application suites do; but also allows you the access to your files from anywhere you have an Internet connection.
- Google Docs features a fully functional word processing application, that allows you to access, create, upload, download as alternate formats, and share your documents.
- Google Presentations is an application that allows you to produce your presentations anywhere and even allows you to save shared collaborative versions with a revision history.
- Google Spreadsheets is an application which allows you to create spreadsheets with all the features common to popular software suites, including formulas, functions, charts, and forms.
- Google Forms allows you to create custom forms and surveys for use in your courses. Types of questions include paragraph text, multiple choice, checkboxes, choose from list, scale, and grid. You can also apply stylized themes to your form as well that are available and updated from other Google users. Results are saved in a spreadsheet and can be easily accessed, updated, and made into a chart or drawing for reporting purposes.
- Google Docs has also added a drawing application for creating simple diagrams and drawings for your documents and presentations. Features worth noting are... Collection of shapes and tools for quick drawings Add text and images to your drawing easily Collaborate with a colleague on a drawing or diagram in real time
- PicPick functions as a capture tool, image editor, color picker, color palette, magnifier, pixel ruler, protractor, crosshair, whiteboard, etc. This tool can be used in multiple ways. For example an instructor may use the whiteboard feature to highlight, comment, or draw on the screen and then capture the screen to provide for students as after lecture notes.
- Pixlr is an online image editing application that can be used to create, edit, and share your images or digital photographs.
- XnView is a free multimedia viewer, file browser, and graphic conversion application which supports up to 400 different graphic file formats. It allows you to manage your images more effectively by allowing you to add metadata, properties, and comments. Other features include the batch processing of your images with simple fixes such as name changes, resizing, rotation, and watermarks. You can also use it for simple screen captures, slide-shows, and even custom Web gallery pages.
- iSpring Free is a Free software application which works as an add-on to Microsoft PowerPoint. It allows you to convert your PowerPoint presentation to a Web-ready Flash file. iSpring files are: easily distributable in Flash format which is optimized for the web and used everywhere viewable anywhere on any computer regardless of viewers' platforms and browsers accessible and searchable to the worldwide audience on the free SlideBoom online service rapidly viewed as streaming Flash starts playback as soon as the first slide is loaded secure as .SWF files are not easily pirated, accessed or changed
- doPDF is a free PDF converter for both personal and commercial use. Using doPDF you can create PDF files by selecting the "Print" command from virtually any application. doPDF installs itself as a virtual PDF printer driver so after a successful installation will appear in your Printers and Faxes list. To convert to PDF, you just have to print the document to doPDF, the free pdf converter.
- HTML Kit is a full-featured editor for HTML, XHTML, XML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and other text files. It can be downloaded for free and used for non-commercial or educational purposes.
- Even though these tools are free and for the most part easy to use, you will want to keep in mind the possibility that they may disappear at any time, be purchased by another entity, and may not always have the greatest technical support. Items of possible concern could be: Intellectual property Data mining Privacy issues
