3. WHAT IS A FRACTION?
Fraction is the number that is not a whole number, but
a part of a whole.
It is considered as a method of counting parts of things.
Fractions consists of a NUMERATOR and
DENOMINATOR.
The top number of a fraction is called NUMERATOR.
The bottom number of a fraction is called
DENOMINATOR.
4. WE USE FRACTIONS ALL THE TIME.
Have you ever used a steel tape or a ruler?
Inches are divided into parts
Have you ever used a measuring cup?
Cups are divided into parts
Have you ever seen a pizza?
Pizza is divided into parts
Have you ever see slices of bread?
Loaf of bread is divided into slices.
5. TYPES OF FRACTIONS
Proper fractions – the top number
(numerator) is SMALLER than the bottom
number (denominator).

6. REMEMBER THIS!
The denominator can never be equal to 0.

7. EXAMPLE
How much of a pizza do we have ?
The blue circle is our whole. - if we divide the whole into 8 congruent
pieces, - the denominator would be 8.
We can see that we have 7 of these pieces. Therefore the numerator is
7, and we have

8. NAMING OF FRACTIONS
• In spoken English people say the
numerator as a cardinal number
followed by the ordinal of the
denominator + ”s”.
• In Maths, when we use fractions
we usually say the numerator
OVER the denominator
