The Arabic period of education from 700-1350 AD focused on preparing male students of the upper class, ages 7-20, according to the goals of the Islamic empire. Students memorized and copied religious and technical texts, learning reading, writing, mathematics, medicine and science from priest and scribe instructors. This period emphasized cultivating religious commitment to Islamic beliefs and restricted education to religious elites, though it contributed Arabic numerals and advances in computation, medicine and science. The foundations of education have changed over time based on the goals, contributions and influences of different historical periods on the development of individuals and society from the past to present.
