Fossil fuels are fuels formed from the remains of ancient organisms. They include coal, petroleum, and natural gas and were formed over millions of years from the decomposition of buried plants and animals. Fossil fuels are non-renewable and are being depleted much faster than new ones can form. They currently provide the majority of the world's energy but burning them produces greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming and other environmental problems. While fossil fuels have been important for powering industry and modern life, there is a growing movement toward renewable energy sources to meet future energy needs in a more sustainable way.
