FORUM COACHING
The goal of a coaching session is to get answers to these two questions by digging into the situation. You’ll
present the answers at the actual presentation in the Forum:
1) What is the core (ideally singular) challenge that you are facing?
2) What is the ideal experience share you'd love to hear from the group?
THE MAIN GOAL
THINGS CHANGE
Coaching is like walking on a city street. They think that the street they are on now is the core
challenge, but your job as their coach is to explore each side street you pass and see if the real core
challenge is on another street and not the one you are on now. Often times, the core challenges
someone starts with ends up not being the final challenge after the coaching call for three main
reasons:
1) They start with multiple core challenges and you help them narrow down to one.
2) They start with multiple core challenges and you help them zoom out and find a
bigger core challenge that encompasses all the smaller challenges.
3) In talking it out with you and finding clarity, they realize they have a totally different core
challenge.

FORUM COACHING
DO NOT...
1) DO NOT give your own advice or experience share. Save that for the Forum meeting.
2) DO NOT talk too much. Ask questions and let them talk. Sometimes they will struggle to clearly
state their challenge, and in those situations, it's okay to paraphrase what they said (after they
said it) to help them say it better.
3) DO NOT plant feelings and thoughts in their head. For example, instead of saying "Does that
make you feel sad?" say "How does that make you feel?" If you say the word sad, then you are
planting that idea in their head.
TO START…
Always start with these two questions to get a baseline of what they are thinking...
1) What is the core (ideally singular) challenge that you are facing?
2) What is ideal experience share you'd love to hear from the group?
Then ask the same questions two more times, once in the middle and at the very end, and see if/how
their answers change.
