2. • Major causes of accidental deaths
• 1500 die each year due to FB aspiration
• Majority age <3yrs
3. Aspiration in young children
• Lack of molar teeth
• Poorer mastication
• Tendency to put things in mouth
• Playing with things in mouth
• Immature protective laryngeal reflexes
4. • Food items are aspirated most commonly
• Peanuts are most frequently aspirated food
• After FB aspiration occurs , the FB can settle
into 3 anatomic sites larynx, trachea, bronchus
5. Types of FB
• Non irritating : plastic , glass , mettalic
• Irritating : vegetables, peanuts , beans, seeds
Irritating FB diffuse reaction leading to
congestion & edema of tracheobronchial
mucosa , a condition called as “vegetable
bronchitis”
6. Phases
• Initial phase: choking , gasping, coughing, or
airway obstruction at time of aspiration
• Asymptomatic phase: lodging of FB with
relaxation of reflexes that often results in
reduction or cessation of symptoms , lasting hrs
to weeks
• Complication phase: FB producing erosion or
obstruction leading to pneumonia , atelectasis or
abscess
7. FB in larynx
• FB can cause complete or partial airway
obstruction
