The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an agency of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare responsible for protecting public health through regulating and supervising food safety. FSSAI was established under the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006 to consolidate food safety laws in India. It aims to establish science-based standards for food articles and regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure availability of safe food for consumption. FSSAI enforces the provisions of the Act along with State Food Safety Authorities.

Food Code. The Codex Alimentarius standards cover
all basic food types, raw, semi-processed and processed, that are
intended for distribution to the costumers.
The regulations of the Codex refer to food hygiene and quality, including
microbiological standards, food additives, pesticides and residues from
veterinary drugs, contaminants, food labeling and marketing, methods for
sampling and hazard analysis, food import and export, certification
system, etc.
Ensures that products complying with Codex standards can be sold on the
international market without compromising health or interests of
consumers. Codex standards ensure product is safe OR not
internationally. Review of member laws based in internationally accepted
scientific and technological standards.
Food License issued by FSSAI for carrying on activities related to food catering, restaurant, dried fruit packaging or processing or any stage of manufacturing, food processing, packaging, storage, transportation, and distribution of food in any form of food business.

2. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an agency of
the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India.
The FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health
through the regulation and supervision of food safety.
The FSSAI has been established under the Food Safety and Standards Act,
2006 which is a consolidating statute related to food safety and regulation in
India.

3. Objective:
FSSAI has been created for,
Laying down science based standards for articles of food.
To regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import.
To ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.

Edible Oils Packaging (Regulation)Order 1988,
Solvent Extracted Oil, De- Oiled Meal and Edible Flour(Control) Order, 1967,

will be repealed after commencement of FSS Act, 2006.
Highlights of the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006
5. The Act also aims to establish a single reference point for all matters relating to food safety
and standards, by moving from multi- level, multi- departmental control to a single line of
command.
To this effect, the Act establishes an independent statutory Authority “the Food Safety and
Standards Authority of India” with head office at Delhi.
Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the State Food Safety Authorities
shall enforce various provisions of the Act.
6. Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India is the Administrative
Ministry for the implementation of FSSAI.
The Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of Food Safety and Standards
Authority of India (FSSAI) have already been appointed by Government of India.
The Chairperson is in the rank of Secretary to Government of India.
The executive head of FSSAI is the Chief Executive Officer.

The FDA has its headquarters at New Delhi.
The agency also has 5 regional offices located in Delhi, Guwahati, Mumbai,

8. Mandate:
Framing of Regulations to lay down the Standards and guidelines in relation to articles of food
Laying down mechanisms and guidelines for certification of food safety management system .
To provide scientific advice and technical support to Central Government and State Governments in the
matters of food safety and nutrition .
Creating an information network across the country so that the public, consumers, Panchayats etc
receive rapid, reliable and objective information about food safety and issues of concern
9. Collect and collate data.
Provide training programmes for persons who are involved or intend to get involved in
food businesses.
Contribute to the development of international technical standards for food, sanitary
and phyto-sanitary standards.
Promote general awareness about food safety and food standards.
