FOOD PACKAGING
Food packaging and packaging for food. Package
provides protection, and resistance to tampering,
especially physical, chemical or biological needs.
Activity 1:Investigating food
packaging
1. We put popcorn in the microwave.
2. Bulging bag of popcorn and then ripen.
3. We opened the bag and found some of the corn has not equated.
4. Purpose: Verification of microwave popcorn packaging efficiency.

Conclusion: packaging efficiency = 9/149 = 6%
Activity 2:Analyzing food
packaging materials
 This is our second activity with Albairaq and we are
going to analyse what is inside our grocery bag.
 We are going to list three types of foods in a data
tale.
 Data tale for analysis of food packaging
materials.

Activity 3:Evaluating the impact of
food packaging on the environment
(objectives)
 We are going to decide which package is the best for the
environment.
 We will examine several different types of packaging.
(procedure)
 The packaging that has the lowest mass is the one that
requires the least amount of materials and energy to
produce.
 packaging that made of recycled materials help reduce
waste.

 A lower number means more efficient packaging.
 Reduce, Reuse, Recycle are the importance of
deciding which is the best package for the
environment.
Activity 5:Designing a protective
packaging
 We are going to design our own package by using
simple material.
 We will compare different materials.
 We have noticed that scientists have developed
protection in some food like eggs packaging ,
tomato, etc…
 PART A:-
 Comparing different materials.
 Materials be tasted by :-
 Perforated foam sheets.
 Material to be tested by group: Paper , air bubble sheet

Design Project: Hot/ Ice box
Objective
Each group have to design a project to preserve food. The
project have to be designed by the requests and needs of
the people
We are going to design our own project called (Hot/Ice
box)
Procedure/prototypes
We design this project to make something new and benefit
for the people and we try hard to let our product be such as
we planned, put we need you to support us and help us to
develop this project. It’s designed from simple materials,
but we strive to develop it.
Product Idea
Hot/Ice box
 There are needs for our project to benefit Qatari society
and other societies. The project has attracted us as it is
useful and easy to use and a lot of people need this project
alive, we are one of those who are in need for this project.
 This project is special because of the experience and
reliability of the result, and have many of the featured
properties. We were interested in this project because it
helps to keep the food hot or cold and keep it in preserved
and stable for a long time, and to maintain the
temperature. Our project have a promising future, but after
the development of the project and the achievement of all
the changes.
 The aim of the work (goals)
 The most important goal to reach it from our
project is to achieve what people need
 To keep the food hot and cold
 Maintaining the temperature
 Use it anywhere
 Hypothesis
 We assume from the project to succeed and work
like we designed it. They carry all the needs of the
community.
Hot/ice Box
Our product story
Through our participation in the al-bairaq we learned 
how to save food and packaged in a healthy and cheap
package and can be recycled and not harm the
environment, Al Bairaq team helped us during the
workshop to get ideas and also think of new and useful
ways , and we were able to design a project save and
heat food , we called (Hot/ ice Box) .
Hot/ice Box
 The benefits of our project is to keep the hot and
cold food and maintain the temperature for a long
time with minimum Fund for the heat insulator. We
have designed this project for people who love safari
and long trips
Results
 We were able to workout with this project, it has
been useful and we have reached the goal.
Conclusion
 We hope that this community benefits from this
project because it meets their needs and it’s useful
and easy to use and transport.
Recommendations
 We advise to improve this project, it must be: -
 More useful
 More protection
 More than the size of the different places and people
 Our need greater protection to avoid problems of
this project because it is not cooling materials such
as thermal insulation so it really needs to be
improved.
Conclusions
(Overall)
 Cooperation in the work is the primary means for the
success of these projects and the division of labor between
group members have an important role in completion of
the project in a shorter time and accurately, Through our
cooperation in making a range of packaging the food we
were able to create this new idea that will help a lot of
People, especially the people who spend their time on trips.
Acknowledgment
Many thanks to my teachers, school and AL-Bairaq team
from Center for Advanced Materials (CAM), Qatar University
for supporting us during our journey with a AL-Bairaq.
Also, I would like to thank the sponsors UNESCO, Ras Gas,

Outline  Outline  Activity 1: Investigating food packaging  Activity 2: Analyzing food packaging materials  Activity 3: Evaluating the impact of food packaging on the environment  Activity 4: Researching food packaging materials  Activity 5: Designing a protective packaging  Product Idea: )Hot/Ice box(
  • 3. FOOD PACKAGING Food packaging and packaging for food. Package provides protection, and resistance to tampering, especially physical, chemical or biological needs.
  • 4. Activity 1:Investigating food packaging 1. We put popcorn in the microwave. 2. Bulging bag of popcorn and then ripen. 3. We opened the bag and found some of the corn has not equated. 4. Purpose: Verification of microwave popcorn packaging efficiency.
  • 5. Activity 1:Investigating food packaging Popcorn bag Observations Popped 149 Not popped 9 Conclusion: packaging efficiency = 9/149 = 6%
  • 6. Activity 2:Analyzing food packaging materials  This is our second activity with Albairaq and we are going to analyse what is inside our grocery bag.  We are going to list three types of foods in a data tale.
  • 7.  Data tale for analysis of food packaging materials. Type of food package Materials used in packaging Purpose of each material Batook • chewing gum Wax • Carton • The wax protect the carton from liquid Mountain Dew • Aluminium • Tin plate steel •  Packing Mass (g) Product Mass (g)  Product mass = (package + Food mass) – Package mass
  • 8. Activity 3:Evaluating the impact of food packaging on the environment (objectives)  We are going to decide which package is the best for the environment.  We will examine several different types of packaging. (procedure)  The packaging that has the lowest mass is the one that requires the least amount of materials and energy to produce.  packaging that made of recycled materials help reduce waste.
  • 9. Activity 3:Evaluating the impact of food packaging on the environment  Data table:-  Product Description of packaging and materials Product Image Total mass of packaging and product Mass of packing alone Prod/Packing uct ratio Hero baby food Glass with aluminium cover 130 g 1.10 g honey bottle Glass with aluminium cover 307+750=1057 Tray strawberry milk Plastic 180+18.6=198.6
  • 10. (conclusion)  A lower number means more efficient packaging.  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle are the importance of deciding which is the best package for the environment.
  • 11. Activity 5:Designing a protective packaging  We are going to design our own package by using simple material.  We will compare different materials.  We have noticed that scientists have developed protection in some food like eggs packaging , tomato, etc…
  • 12.  PART A:-  Comparing different materials.  Materials be tasted by :-  Perforated foam sheets.  Material to be tested by group: Paper , air bubble sheet Description of tomato and package Observation of tomato and package after drop from 50 cm 100 cm 150 cm 200 cm 250 cm 300 cm Experimental no no no no yes no control no no yes no no no Mass of packaging 22 g Mass of tomato 181.9 %=0.1209 Activity 5:Designing a protective packaging
  • 13.  Part B:-  Designing a protective package  The materials we used:- 1. Corrugated wrap. 2. Perforated foam sheets. 3. Biodegradable packaging.
