Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Food habits the responsibility of each individual ppt
1. Chapter 7: THE RESPONSIBILITY OF EACH
INDIVIDUAL
Book Name: Nutrition for a better life- Peter
Brabeck-Letmathe
Prepared by: Md AmirParay
Technical Officer
2. Individual’s personal responsibility: health & wellbeing
1. What can we decide and what not.
2. Traditions, diet myths and ideological trends.
3. How the social environment shapes our eating
habits ?
4. The influence of diet on health.
3. 1. WHAT CAN WE DECIDE AND
WHAT NOT ?
What can we decide What cannot we decide
We should follow our own ideas and
should know how to eat properly and be
healthy
We should not allow failure of will power,
dispute, self control and rational insight.
We all know unhealthy food is major cause
of disease like obesity, diabetes and
cardiovascular diseases. Also, to cancer in
stomach and intestinal tract.
It is not so tough to change the pattern of
eating
Not all decisions are made in head.
Unfavorable microbes manipulate the
eating behavior of the people in order to
ensure their own well being, even if harms
human health.
Mood hormones (dopamine and
serotonin)- stimulate the appetite-thus an
easy way for the micro biome to
manipulate people.
4. 2. TRADITIONS, DIET MYTHS AND
IDEOLOGICAL TRENDS.
Traditions: In Western societies eating habits are more influenced by social
environment but less by traditional. Exception are the diet
motivated or prohibited by religion
Diet Myths : Lack of knowledge is leading to myths e.g. not consuming milk
products after eating fish and meat. Blaming heart attack and
strokes on milk, butter or red meat.
Ideological Trends:
• Quality as growing trend. Quality eaters are mostly females (62 %).
• Freshness, naturalness, seasonality etc are important to quality eaters.
• From diet to lifestyle, TV, Magazines, internet—these now promote Vegan Diet.
5. The 7 diet types
1. The health idealists: Actively live out their ideals and beliefs. Their standards are
based on high quality of life. They buy fresh organic produce and directly by fresh
organic product and cook several times a day.
2. The problem conscious: Great health conscious. They also value quality and
freshness but insist on a reasonable price. They have a daily diet routine and
experienced and good cooks and prefer to eat at home
3. The Nest warmer:- Mostly females and look for harmony in all areas of life. They
find their responsibly for family. They value for fresh and like cooking. They are
willing to pay a higher price.
4. The Harried:-. They do not have time to eat the food . Usually young to middle aged
men who have difficulty to balance work and leisure. They suffer from insomnia,
fatigue and obesity. Quality products play no role. They depend upon snacks and
fast foods.
6. CONT.
5. The Modern multi- optional:- They have high expectations of them selves
and are also frequently under time pressure. They are trying to mix me-
time and we time. They suffer from stress and eat irregularly in a rush
and late. They want fresh food and but not ready to spend more for
quality.
6. The transgressors: - they put more emphasis on quantity rather tan
quality . Mostly young and single men who are looking for fun and
superficial enjoyment. Their health and fitness conditions is poor. They
lack cooking experience and like food facilitated by microwave and
frozen foods.
7. The Passionless:- Entirely dispassionate , mostly men. The y have no
health awareness and a good , balanced diet for them is not an issue.
Shopping must be done as quickly as possible and be cheap. Simple
meals, frozen meals and canned foods determine their diet
7. 3. HOW THE SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT SHAPES
OUR EATING HABITS
De-structuring of daily routine leads to snacks culture.
Stress also leads to snacks eating habit.
Time pressure affects the eating behavior.
Nearly half of the professionals try to save time, but not
cooking and thus rely on convenience eating . These are
called “mobile eaters”
8. 4. THE INFLUENCE OF DIET ON HEALTH
Science-based nutritional knowledge is still lacking .
Inform Consumers about which nutrients and what amount the human body
needs and what functions they perform.
Many people voluntarily refrain from lactose (lactose intolerance) and gluten
containing products. (to avoid celiac disease).
Therefore the market of gluten-free products is growing rapidly and increasing
the price than normal foods.
Coffee is not only a stimulant but has many usefulness. E.g. it improves
endurance, reduce the risk of heart attack and reduce the cancers. Also, useful for
type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
Spices have been found to contain many useful substances. E.g. eugenol in cloves,
capsaicin in chilies, menthol in peppermint. They reduce the neurodegenerative
disease like Alzheimer's.
The breast milk is best for the development of child. It is rich in vital nutrients in
right amounts and suitable for child.
9. 1. We should know that unhealthy food is major
cause of disease.
2. The unfavorable microbes manipulate the eating
behavior of the people.
3. Stress, time pressure, destabilizing the daily
routine leads to snacks eating culture.
4. Science-based nutritional knowledge is required.
Conclusion:
