Food Ban Research Paper
Should government have the freedom to limit its citizens' freedom? The answer is yes but the
question is how much and for what reasons. The ban on large sugary drinks – more than 16 ounce–
at food service establishments proposed by The New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg sparked
a heated debate over this question. Proponents of the ban justified it by citing studies which showed
excessive amount of sugar causes obesity and has many other serious negative effects on health.
They argued that such consequences have negative effect for the whole society, in form of additional
health care and social welfare cost. Opponents of the ban argued that it imposes an unjustified and
unnecessary limit on personal freedom, does not reach the intended goal of limiting obesity, and sets
precedent for excessive government overreach. Both sides have strong arguments, I am inclined to
side with the opponents of the ban mainly because I am wary of unnecessary government overreach
but I am on the border and ready to change my opinion in future.
In June 2012, Bloomberg announced that food service establishments should ... Show more content

In this case a proponent of the deal can argue that scientific research leaves no doubt that excessive
consumption of sugary beverages is harmful. As a result the government has a moral obligation to
ban it even if it only hurts the consumer and no one else. To oppose this argument in a utilitarian
context, the opponent must show that the ban does not lead to the intended consequences. They can
argue that the ban does not include supermarkets, so the consumer can go and buy as much sugary
beverage he/she wants somewhere else.
In a legal context the question is whether based on the constitution and other governing laws in the
country and the state, the city officials have the legal authority to impose such a ban. According to
the New York judiciary system they

The Food Stamp Problem in the USA and Fingerprinting its...
According to the article Millions Commit Food Stamp Fraud Every Year, "Food stamps represent
one of the fastest growing federal programs in the U.S., 46 million Americans now receive
assistance, but, it's a program ripe for abuse" (Volk, 2012). Though the idea behind food stamps is
noble, and there is a definite need for the program; there are many problems that arise from the food
stamps program. The primary problem in terms of decision–making is the fraud associated with the
food stamp program. According to Tanner as quoted in the Millions Commit Food Stamp Fraud
Every Year article, "The food stamp program has always had one of the highest rates of waste, fraud
and abuse" (Volk, 2012). In an attempt to ensure that food stamps were being ... Show more content

Though the duplicate cases were caught, it is not documented how many of those cases were fraud.
There is a lot of data that would need to be analyzed in order to fully understand the primary
problem. One statistic to start with would be to find out how many people are in need of receiving
food stamps. From there, it would be important to know how many of those people participate in the
food stamp program, and how many people do not. For those who are eligible to receive benefits but
chose not to, it would be important to find out the reason why they do not partake in the program.
After the preliminary information surrounding the need of the program is assessed, the most helpful
information would be to find out how many cases of fraud there is in a given year. Knowing how
relevant the problem is that exists would be a great place to start in finding a solution. Additionally,
for the controversial solutions that have been introduced, such as the fingerprinting methods, more
substantial data needs to be analyzed to determine the success of the program. According to the
podcast there were 600,000 New York citizens eligible for food stamps who did not apply for the
program (NPR, 2012). However, it did not state whether this was directly related to the
implementation of the fingerprinting program. It would be beneficial to find out why those people
did not apply for the program, and how many of those people did not apply because of the stigma

The Stop And Frisk Laws
The stop and frisk laws in New York City illustrate Max Weber's idea of the societal role of laws
because it shows how Weber distinguishes the law from things such as social norms and customs. In
other words, Weber believes that rather than create laws that conform to the norms of society, they
are made in accordance of the needs of a state. Weber defines law "as coercive order, an order that
has the potential backing of the full force of the state," (Law, Status, Wealth, and Power 110). A
state can support the law with full support in order to protect what it was made to protect. The stop
and frisk laws are a great example of laws such as the ones that German lawyer Max Weber
described.
The idea of a stop and frisk is that a police officer can arrest a suspect only if they have enough
suspicion that someone has committed a crime. A stop is only allowed when "a police officer
observes unusual conduct which leads him reasonably to conclude in light of his experience that
criminal activity may be afoot," (Toobin, TNY 2013). Some believe that the search and frisk law
itself is not the issue, but that the practice by police officers is what is at question. Constantly
targeting minorities is what the basis of the controversy behind this law is. As the numbers will
show in the rest of this essay, they are the ones who are being most frequently searched and this is
resulting in a high number of people who are against this law. There have been countless trials in

Stop And Frisk During The United States
There has always been tension between maintaining a safe society and abiding by the constitutional
rights of its citizens. However the New York City aggressive program of Stop and Frisk have been
widely criticized and considered unconstitutional. However, Stop and Frisk, per se is not
unconstitutional unless people are being stopped illegally. It 's a crime prevention tactic that allows
police officers to stop a person based on reasonable suspicion of criminal activity and conduct a
frisk based on reasonable suspicion that the person is armed and or dangerous. Some argue this
policy was created to target minorities. Most of the people who have been stopped and frisked under
the program have been African American or Hispanic. This concerns ... Show more content on

It give people the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against
unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue but upon
probable cause. Moreover, the broken window theory is a theory behind Stop and Frisk. They both
states that maintaining and monitoring urban environments in a well ordered condition may stop
further vandalism and escalation into most serious crime.
Stop and Frisk practice raise serious concerns over racial profiling, illegal stops and privacy rights.
According to William J. Bratton "On average from 2002 to 2013 the number of individuals stopped
and Frisked without any convictions was 87.6%. However, out of that 87.6% around 23% were
black, 24% were Hispanic. And during all this stops the police officers recorded using force; police
officers failed to states a specific suspected crime. Therefore many people had claimed "what will
happen if cops were trained to do their field inquiries with respect and stop targeting people based
on their color and race". Police officers sometimes use their power to make changes and preventing
crimes from happening, however they sometimes abuse of it and used it to target people and
discriminate them. According to the NYPD 's own report "around nine out of ten stopped and
frisked New Yorkers have been completely innocent".
Stop and Frisk basically grant police officers the authority to stop,

Disasters Caused By Extreme Weather
In 21st century, more frequently crisis caused by extreme weather let us realized our inability. We
can not only deal with the terrible consequences caused by disaster, we need to find a method to
reduce the damage of disaster. "Resilience" is put forward to deal with the natural disaster.
As the greenhouse effect aggravates, frozen earth begins to melt, sea level starts to rise and
precipitation patterns are changing. Followed by extreme weather, such as hurricane, tsunami, flood,
extreme heat, drought, and tornado, becomes more frequent and more intense, additionally more
difficult to be predicted. Due to this, in past ten years, natural disaster affects over 220 million
people, and over 100 million US dollars are damaged per year; only in 2011, economic damage
caused by urban disaster at over 380 billion US dollars. However, the largest damage is not the
direct economic losses, but the cost of post–disaster reconstruction. The worst thing is, for some
place which has chronic or frequent crises, for instance the drought in Horn of Africa, tsunami in
Hawaiian Islands, hurricane in Louisiana and Florida, require deal with the threats frequently, rather
than only deal with the consequences.

Government Is Involved Too Much Into Health And Human...
I personally believe that government is involved too much into health and human services. When I
see the percentage of the funds that go into health and human services it's nice to see that the
government recognizes the importance of keeping its citizens healthy and taking action to provide
citizens with Medicaid and Medicare. The issue I have is the complexity and aggravation it causes
the majority when they go a little to overboard. In my opinion its perfect when the government
focuses on significant issues that affect the masses that helps everyone. In the past it would have
been acceptable for state and local government to direct a huge portion of its funds into dealing with
hookworm, an infection that in places like Georgia affected a total of 51.7 percent of people. This
was a disease that affected everyone no matter what social status or life choices you had, in that time
period. It was effective that they completed public work projects and worked on providing everyone
with sanitary conditions and hospitals.
Personally I think it's the governments job to protect the people even if it is not an economically
smart decision. When government is getting to personal and aggressive by forcing people to pay for
Medicare or Medicaid in which if the person doesn't not get Medicare or Medicaid results in them
getting a separate tax to being doing a little too much. I think that the government crosses the line
some times in the amount of benefits that they are giving out to the

America 's Constitution Was Built Upon The Fundamentals...
America's Constitution was built upon the fundamentals that all citizens are created equal and
tolerate one another. However in the recent years this tolerance for others beliefs has diminished,
sprouting censorship, and sensitivity to others with different beliefs. Michael Bloomberg former
mayor of New York City (NYC) and Harvard graduate and philtronphist then Wendy Kaminer, an
attorney, author and social critic argues that intolerance needs to stop. Additionally, they believe that
citizens should become more accepting of others and willing to converse despite their differences.
Bloomberg wrote in his commencement speech at Harvard's graduation for the class of 2014 that,
citizens of the U.S. should protect their freedom of speech and also to tolerate the beliefs of others.
Likewise Kaminer argued in her essay A Civic Duty to Annoy published in "The Atlantic" that
citizens have a responsibility to enter thought provoking discussions on important issues to build
tolerance for different beliefs. Similarly both authors believe that Americans have to tolerate others
beliefs to respect the First Amendment. Although, they present similar ideas Bloomberg's is better at
persuading citizens to tolerate others' beliefs than Kaminer's essay.
In Bloomberg's speech, he discussed that society should protect its freedom of speech and tolerate
the diverse beliefs of others. This protection of others' beliefs is a fundamental right for citizens of

Rhetorical Analysis OfNo Firemen At Ground Zero This 9 / 11?
Rhetorical Analysis In the article "No Firemen at Ground Zero This 9/11?", Michael Burke uses
multiple techniques to persuade his audience of the injustice committed against the first responders
of 9/11 by excluding them from the 10 year anniversary at Ground Zero. Burke works towards the
goal of having first responders be included in the memorial at Ground Zero, after Mayor Bloomberg
claims there isn't enough room. Throughout the piece, Burke targets his argument at the influential
readers of the Wall Street Journal in New York to get them to use their influence to put pressure on
Bloomberg to get the first responders to be properly honored. Some of the most important strategy
that Burke uses to persuade his audience is the structure of his piece, and his use of quotes. One of
the key things that Burke did to persuade his audience of the significance of having first responders
included in the memorial is the way he structured his piece. In most pieces, the thesis is placed near
the beginning of the piece, but not in Burke's piece. Burke places his thesis as the very last sentence
of his piece as a way to appeal to his audience. Given that his audience is a group of logically
thinking businessmen starting with his thesis would only work against him, since they would most
likely agree with the Mayor's viewpoint that there simply is not enough room. But to make his
audience think less logically, Burke starts his piece with a long narrative describing the events of

The Wall Street Is An Useful Tool For The American Economy
Pros of Wall Street
Wall Street is an extremely useful tool for the American economy. It helps those who are in the
lower part of the social ladder by giving them a chance to climb the ladder of economic opportunity.
Wall Street also helps boost other industries within America, thereby making it vital for the
American economy. As Wall Street is one of the most important financial institutions in the world
and provides more positive aspects for the economy than negative ones. Wall Street is extremely
important for the American economy. Jeff Madrick, the editor of Challenge: The Magazine of
Economic Affairs, in his piece "Does America need Wall Street", cites historian Alfred Chandler,
who argued that the majority of the money put into America during industrialization came from
corporate profits (Madrick). Those profits were able to make technological advances for all
Americans. Daniel Indiviglio, former associate editor of the Atlantic, states that Wall Street is also
important to the economy because it helps banks create capital (Indiviglio). That bank capital helps
create jobs in the economy by causing more money to be available to be put into the economy. Wall
Street plays an important part in the economy, and without it, America would face financial
hardships. Wall Street also helps the American economy by providing the opportunity to be able to
move up the financial ladder. Adam Davidson, a journalist who focuses on business and economic

Descriptive Essay About Michaelmas
Michaelmas
Every year, on the colorful fall day of September 29th, Sacramento Waldorf School hosts a festival
where good triumphs and evil parishes. Young girls and boys eagerly dress up as knights, to help
Saint George and Saint Michael conquer and tame the malicious dragon, through good actions and
deeds. Along with fun activities, caramel apples, and motivating spirit, Michaelmas is a special way
to prepare students for the challenging academic year ahead.
Michaelmas is a whole school event, where grades first through twelve are assigned a different role,
to put on a show that has its own unique twist each time. The roles include villagers (played by first
through fourth grade), Knights (played by the fifth grade) the dragon (Played by the sixth grade),
Lords and nobles (played by seventh through eleventh grade) and lastly, Saint George and Saint
Michael (played by twelfth graders). The story told is a classic good vs. evil, preformed inside a
giant circle, created by everyone attending the festival. A town of poor villages are fearful of a
dragon, who is merciless and cruel. One day, the dragon attacks the village, leaving the villagers
desperate and frightened. All the noble knights flee in fear, except for one, Saint George. Saint
George bravely faces the dragon, but instead of using his sword, he kneels and prays to saint
Michael to give him wisdom and strength. Michael appears out of the heavens, and empowers Saint
George, with courage, and kindness. Saint George

History of Biblical Angels
History of Biblical Angels Throughout history, you will find many religions discuss angels. But
what is an angel? Is it a mythical creature with wings sent to protect you? Some may think so;
others have different thoughts on the matter. But when did talk of angels first occur? Have they
always been around? In this paper, I will attempt to define what an angel is and what they do. I will
also discuss how angels differ between religions, as well as try to pinpoint the origin of angels. I
will explain the similarities and differences between these religions and their ideas of angels. The
term angel is derived from the Greek word angelos , meaning "messenger." This word represents an
earlier Hebrew word, mal'akh that is also interpreted as the role of messenger or minister. It is safe
to say that many people will regard angels as messengers between Heaven and earth. In many
biblical stories, angels are sending messages. Some messages are announcements of birth like the
ones that were sent to Abraham and to Samson's father. Other messages encourage actions as the
ones did to Elijah and David. In these cases, angels were bringing messages from the divine world,
or Heaven, to men and women in the earthly human world. It is believed that the messages with
angels also work in the reversed sense as well; meaning from human being to angel to God. It is said
that 'the soul speaks to the angel, the angel to the cherub, the cherub to God.' This type of
communication would explain the

Michael Bloomberg : A Great Entrepreneur And Philanthropist
There are people who are born with a knack to lead. Their personal and life experiences has helped
them to find their passion and motivation to become today's entrepreneurs. These people end up
leaving behind a great legacy. Michael Bloomberg is an example of a great entrepreneur and
philanthropist. He came from a family of immigrants, where he learned the values of hard work and
humility, and because of it, he is known as a business tycoon in today's world. He is the CEO and
co–founder of his own company, Bloomberg LP. He also has held a political office becoming the
mayor of one of the world's most diverse cities across the world, New York City.
According to chapter 5 it states "leadership is an institutional capacity, not solely an individual trait,
in many successful companies" (p.53). No great feat is ever done by a single person, but by a team
who is there to support you and help you overcome hurdles and obstacles. Michael Bloomberg
became a political figure; he was an entrepreneur who saw potential in himself and pushed forward
so far as to run for office. Enforced the laws created by his predecessor and enacted new ones to
keep caring for a city that had been through so much. He won office to have his opinions heard and
implement his ideas, but to do so he needed a team who shared his ideals. I'll say he was an architect
structural leader, as he delegated tasks according to the potential each of the people in his cabinet
had. In starting his company he shared the

Racial Profiling Vs. Proactive Policing
Stop and frisk is a tactic where police are stopping an individual whom they think are a suspect of
committing or about to commit a crime. The officer will frisk the individual by lightly patting and
feeling around his/her outer garments to either find a concealed weapon or contraband. This is
something that is not new but this been dated to been used back when Britain had a king. In the last
past ten to fifteen year the numbers of stop and frisk had increased substantially. Currently New
York uses stop and frisk as their main tactic to arrest young African American and Latino men.
Since the police implemented the stop and frisk tactic there been rumors that the crime went down,
but there are no true statics to back this up. Stop and frisk is supposed to be a tactic that equally
targets all races and tries to stop/ reduce crimes that's going on in the cities. There is a lot that's
going on with this stop and frisk, many people will say there's a war going on. The two sides are
"Racial Profiling vs. 'Proactive Policing'". Some people might say that stop and frisk is working

Michael Bloomberg took office (backlash). In such ways, this is true that stop and frisk helped in

John Milton 's Paradise Lost
A few years prior to writing Paradise Lost, John Milton lost his vision. In fact, Milton does not hide
the reality that his "eyes, that roll in vain...find no dawn"(Paradise Lost, 3.22–23). The light that
Milton refers to, however, is not just physical, but it is also spiritual. There is a third type of
blindness that Milton addresses, blindness from knowledge. Milton is concerned with this form of
blindness in a number of works, perhaps most notably Areopagitica. The acquisition of knowledge
plays a vital role in Paradise Lost: the fall of Adam and Even relies on their attainment of
knowledge; the decision to eat the fruit is blasphemous because Adam and Eve know that it is
forbidden to them; Adam embarks on an educational mission as he asks Raphael questions in an
attempt to gain more knowledge about the world around him. However, not all knowledge can be
attained by Adam and Eve, which complicates the justice of the fall. As John Milton explores the
nature of knowledge in Paradise Lost, the validity and visibility of this knowledge lead Adam and
Eve to an unjust fall. With the exception of God, knowledge is limited for all the characters in the
text. When Adam asks Raphael a number of questions concerning his creation and his duties
towards God, Raphael readily answers. However, when Adam inquiries about the cosmological
universe, Raphael provides an answer but quickly reminds Adam that this knowledge "from Man or

Global Poverty And Its Effects On Poverty Essay
One of the most successful efforts to reduce and more effectively measure poverty has been Mayor
Michael Bloomberg's Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO) in New York City. This paper will
explain how CEO was and still is so successful in combatting poverty and will argue that its tactics
should be implemented in cities across the nation. Poverty is one of the most important issues that
the modern world has attempted to confront. For the most part it has been a huge success. Extreme
global poverty has been cut in half in the past 20 years. This statistic is staggering, and not enough
people realize how successful industrialization and the globalized world have been at eradicating
extreme poverty. While this should be celebrated, there is a different problem that the United States
faces while looking inward. The poverty rates within inner cities have not been following the global
trends and decreasing, rather they have been on the rise. CEO has been able to turn New York City
from one of the nations highest poverty rates in large cities to one of the lowest. For this reason their

When Michael Bloomberg was elected mayor of New York City in 2005, he declared the "War on

Narcissism in John Milton’s Paradise Lost Essay
Narcissism in John Milton's Paradise Lost
When Eve eats the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, her decision to tell Adam of her
disobedience turns on two suppositions. If her transgression is kept secret from God, Eve's
augmented knowledge might increase Adam's love for her, and perhaps cause her to be more equal
or even superior to Adam. Even though Eve was created comparable to Adam as his helper, she
refers to Adam as her "Author and Disposer." Furthermore, she says that while God is Adam's law,
Adam is her law. Apparently, Eve chafes under this arrangement, as she wraps up her evaluation of
not telling Adam of her sin with, "for inferior who is free?" However, her death is assured if God
has seen her wrongdoing. In this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Raphael joins Adam for dinner, Eve serves them naked, affirming her place in God's
hierarchy. However, Eve's nakedness arouses no libidinal desires in God's heavenly representative.
Eve listens in on their conversation while Raphael relates how Satan and his rebellious angels were
defeated, and how God and God's Son created the world. Eve leaves when Adam and Raphael
discuss astronomy, her "reason" not suitable for this subject matter, and she only overhears
Raphael's final warning about Satan. Information is power: Eve's status as Adam's "weaker" is clear.
During the conversation with Raphael, Adam relates his first experiences of passion with Eve, an
emotion mixed with his love. While Raphael praises Adam's capacity to love, he disparages Adam's
ability to control his passion. Adam should love, cherish, and honour Eve, but not subject himself to
her. Moreover, Raphael stresses Adam's need to love God, and the potential conflict between his
love for God and his love for Eve. To love God, is to obey God. For Adam, obeying God means
never to eat of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil. While God leaves Adam free to will and in
his own will free, his will though free is mutable. Under the influence of passion – sexual desire for
Eve – Adam could choose to act in ways at variance with his free will and God's will. Sexual
passion engenders pride, affecting Adam's obedience and love for

Michael Is The Savior Jesus Christ In Revelation12 : 12-12...
Revelation 12:7–9 is a vision seen by John that speaks about the war that will occur in heaven. The
passage says,"Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and
the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in
heaven. The great dragon was hurled down―that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who
leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him." The passage
begins by stating that there will be a war in heaven, one between Michael and Satan. Michael is
God's archangel whose name means "one like God". This leads to the possibility that Michael is
Jesus Christ. Jesus has a nature "like God" and can be argued that the word "archangel" might mean
not "ruling angel" but "the ruler of the angels." Add to the fact that the word archangel is never used
in the plural... "(Becker). These facts are strong evidence that Michael is the savior Jesus Christ.
Satan is the dragon that is referred to in the text. The dragon is not specifically described in this
particular passage, but earlier in the chapter there is a glimpse as to what he looked like. According
to Revelation 12:3, "...a great red dragon having seven heads ten horns, and on his head were seven
diadems." The dragon is red to symbolize that it is evil and the horns symbolize its great power.
"The deceitful nature of his seven heads is exaggerated by his seven crowns"(Mueller). These
crowns are diadems that

Ban on Big Drinks
Soda, a sugary drink that has revolutionized the whole world since its invention back in the mid
19th century and a drink that everyone consumes. And recently, the mayor of New York, Michael
Bloomberg has been intending to place a ban on big, oversized soda drinks. New York should
certainly not impose this ban on big drinks over the size of 16 fluid ounces. It's cockamamie! This
ban is not the way to go for the county's finances, the people and the economy. Within New York,
many people believe that the ban is right for various reasons, one being that the obesity epidemic
rates have been staggering high but banning big drinks.... really? As silly as this ban may seem,
lawmakers in New York and intensely debating the idea of banning big drinks. Around the world
people have in mind that soda's are really bad for the health, which they most certainly are, but are
they primary source of fat consumed? Absolutely not! Banning big drinks is 100% not going to curb
obesity. In fact, in Harvard studies, it states that since the 1960's, the amount of energy needed per
day has decreased 60%. People eat 4.9 meals and snacks a day compared to the 3 meals people are
supposed to consume. What this means is that people in fact get most of their energy, and fat of
course from snacks. Not soda! This also means that they aren't burning calories either. It's not the
soda's fault that people are obese, it's the people's lack of knowledge in portion sizes! Liz Hare, a

St. Michael is positioned perfectly upright with a majestic look as he is holding a sword away from
his body horizontally with both hands. His body is covered with a golden body suit of armor except
for his head, which is turned toward Joan and has a full halo behind it. Margaret and Catherine are
both wearing white silky and flowing veils on their heads. There are white flowers in their hair, and
both have golden circles over their heads as halos. Their dresses are also flowing and painted with
light pink and blue. Margaret is positioned upright, her hands clasped by her chest, and her head to
the side looking towards Joan, while Catherine is bent over with her head facing down and both
hands over her face.
Bastien–Lepage showed his ability for capturing the naturalistic look of Joan, but he did not use this
ability to its full extent with the saints. The colors used on the saints are not quite as vivid as with
Joan. Michael's golden body armor and silver sword are not really shining at all, and all three halos
seem to be placed there without any real signs of glowing. The shadowing and detail work in their
clothing and skin are also not quite as life like as Joan. All together the three images of these saints
appear to be somewhat hazy.

distance, and in front of the saints is a stool

Stop and Frisk final outline
Prof: Maule Brian
Introduction:
There has always been tension raised between maintaining a safe society and observing by the
constitutional rights of its citizens. The New York City aggressive program of Stop and Frisk have
been widely criticized and considered unconstitutional. However, Stop and Frisk, per se is not
unconstitutional unless people are being stopped illegally. It 's a crime prevention tool that allows
police officers to stop a person based on reasonable suspicion of criminal activity and to conduct a
frisk based on reasonable suspicion that the person is armed. Some argue this policy was created to
target minorities. Most of the people who have been stopped and frisked under this program have
been African American or Hispanic. This concerns citizens and makes them oppose the policy
because they believe its racial profiling and guided by color. Stop and frisk is now one of the biggest
controversies in United States. It has become something that is affecting society in both a positive
and negative way.

An Authoritative And Popular Sources Essay
Report on Authoritative and Popular Sources
Are you seeking informational resources within the business community? If so, look no further than
the sources given in this report! I have selected three current authoritative sources and one current
popular source to share with you. Though there are numerous authoritative sources in the business
community, the three I selected are Bloomberg Business, Harvard Business Review, and Forbes. For
my current popular source, I selected Investopedia. While analyzing both authoritative and popular
sources I will explain what makes them authoritative or popular, describe their unique
characteristics, and identify their intended purpose and audiences.
Bloomberg Business Week can be accessed online or through a weekly magazine subscription. This
source is authoritative in my discipline because the source is maintained by a large dynamic
editorial team consisting of twenty–five individuals all from unique backgrounds and locations that
each bring differing experiences ("Editorial Team"). Some examples of this include Marc
Champion, editor for internal business affairs for The Wall Street Journal and Francis Barry, who
was the director of public affairs for New York City and a chief speech writer for New York City
Mayor Michael Bloomberg ("Editorial Team"). This source is also accepted throughout the global
business community as well as East Carolina University's School of Business.

The archangel Michael makes his only appearance within Revelation in this introduction. Therefore,
Michael assumes his role as advocate and angelic protector for God's people within the heavenly

Revelation 12:8

Revelation 20:2 Satan's hurling into the abyss is similar to the text found within Isaiah 24:21–22
whereby God will gather the kings of the earth together with the host of heaven enacting their
punishment of being cast into the pit. Similar in content is the story of God's instruction of Raphael's

The Stop-Question and Frisk Program
The black or white, either–or and this or that misconceptions that are common in conversations with
children seems to be arising over the Stop and Frisk Law in New York City. It has long been an
issue of debate over whether it is a form of practicing racial profiling since its implementation.
Arguments between advocates and critics of the law appear to be so incompatible that people are
simply taking sides rather than trying to push the discussion forward. Frankly, supporters and
protestors of the practice have established their opinions with incomplete information and lack of
adequate critical reasoning. While those in favor have failed to admit to the apparent existence of
racial profiling, those who are against the law only focus on racial profiling and do not participate in
the broader discussion of whether or not it actually brings safety to the city. The conversation might
be able to move forward if both sides were to emphasize on the most crucial issue of whether safety
trumps civil rights.
The Stop–Question–and–Frisk Program, more commonly known as "stop and frisk" or 250s,
authorizes police to stop and question pedestrians and frisk them for weapons or other contrabands.
This practice is based on the decision of the United States Supreme Court form the case of Terry v.
Ohio. The holding establishes that if there is reasonable suspicion that the person may be dangerous
or armed, police can stop him or her without violating the Fourth Amendment, which prohibits

What Is The Scale Of Nature In Paradise Lost
Carly Merryman ENGL 328 Stoll 3 October 2014 Paradise Lost: Books V & VI Milton's scale of
nature, while appearing linear, allows the creatures within in it to "ascend to God" by "steps,"
(V.512). This creates a dynamic scale that would enable a particular being the ability to move up and
down the scale based on its behaviors, and align itself closer to God. However, an animal or a
human can only climb so far. No matter how virtuous an animal was it could never surpass a human
because it is lacking the spiritual essence that God awarded to man. Similarly, a human, while
living, could never attain the same closeness to God as an angel. So while this allows for some
degree of mobility, each sect of the scale is confined within the parameters that God set forth. If the
creation was "one first matter all" as Raphael says to Adam then that would mean that all matter
came from God. Not only does this reconcile science and religious beliefs because as Newton's First
Law says, "Matter can neither be created nor destroyed," but it also asserts that all matter begins as
being inherently good. This explanation disqualifies ex nihlo because as science says there can be
no absolute nothing. Milton's attempts to resolve the religion versus science issues are made
stronger by his references to Galileo and astronomy. But Milton's version of the creation tackles the
problem of absolute nothingness. If there were absolute nothingness before matter, then that
nothingness would have had to

The Stop and Frisk Policy Analysis Essay
Eighty–seven percent of stops in 2012, were Black and Hispanic people. Compare that percentage to
the amount of water on Earth, only seventy percent. Now, imagine eighty–seven percent water
covering the Earth. That would make the world unbalanced and difficult to live in, which is how life
is for the minorities impacted by Stop and Frisk. One of the most debated and controversial topics in
New York City is the Stop and Frisk policy, and the impact it has on police, Latinos, and African
Americans. Stop and Frisk fails to promote justice and equitable society because it creates a society
where one group is lesser than another. The Stop and Frisk policy was created in Ohio, 1968,
because of the a Supreme Court case, Terry v. Ohio (US Courts). ... Show more content on

Stop and Frisk does not give the Latino and Black communities equal access to the safety and
protection the police provide because they are the ones constantly being hunted. This is one way that
Stop and Frisk promotes institutional racism. This is also psychologically damaging to victims of
Stop and Frisk because makes them feel unprotected and unsafe
(CCR 8). Stop and Frisk was not created to be racist but, "An institution may not set out to
discriminate but through its' rules, it may have this effect" (Chakraborty). The people who made the
policy and who are enforcing the policy, Stop and Frisk, didn't intend to single out minorities but
that is the end result. Feeling like a policy is created specifically to attack a certain group based on
race gives a feeling like the world and government is against them (Glover). Institutional racism is
also apparent when people acting on the policy (the police being the people and Stop and Frisk
being the policy) show signs of prejudice, oppression, power and discrimination (Randal). The
police show signs of prejudice against the Black and Latinos by showing "an attitude that is based
on limited information or stereotypes" (CCR 7). The police base their searches on what a

Analysis Of No Firemen At Ground Zero By Michael Burke
In the article "No Firemen at Ground Zero This 9/11?", Michael Burke uses multiple techniques to
persuade his audience of the injustice committed against the first responders of 9/11 by excluding
them from the 10 year anniversary at Ground Zero. Burke works towards the goal of having first
responders be included in the memorial at Ground Zero, after Mayor Bloomberg claims there isn't
enough room. Throughout the piece, Burke targets his argument at the influential readers of the Wall
Street Journal in New York to get them to use their influence to put pressure on Bloomberg to get
the first responders to be properly honored. Some of the most important strategy that Burke uses to
persuade his audience is the structure of his piece, and his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As Burke eventually does argue that first responders should be included in the memorial, he makes
sure to point out that denying them the privilege of coming to the memorial would "deny the first
responders their due and proper honor".This would not be as impactful if Burke would not have
started his piece by emphasizing the horrors that the first responders voluntarily walked into. By
organizing the piece the way Burke did, it allowed him to shape the reader's viewpoint of first
responders before he even began arguing his point that first responders must be honored at Ground
Zero on the ten year anniversary of 9/11. Another powerful technique that Burke uses to persuade
his audience is he uses quotes. Burke uses quotes from people who were at the scene of 9/11
themselves. Burke quotes a woman who was descending from the 89th floor who said "When I saw
the firemen I knew we would be all right." By using quotes like this, Burke shows the emotional
reinsurance that the first responders gave to the people involved in the attack. By showing the
emotional response to the first responders, it makes the reader clearly see the importance of the
presence of first responders on the scene and the impact they had on the victims. The first responders
altered the emotional atmosphere of the scene. This shows the significant of the first responders at
the scene and how discluding them from the memorial is "atrocious". Quotes worked hand

Gabriel
Gabriel is an angel who serves as a messenger for God to certain people. He is one of the three
archangels. Gabriel is mentioned in both the Old and the New Testaments of the Bible. First, in the
Old Testament, Gabriel appears to the prophet Daniel to explain his visions. Gabriel is described as,
"one who looked like man," as he interprets Daniel's visions. He speaks to Daniel while he is
sleeping. After Gabriel's first visit, Daniel becomes tired and sick for days. Gabriel later visits
Daniel again providing him with more insight and understanding in an answered prayer.
In the New Testament, Gabriel, described as "an angel of the Lord," first appears to Zacharias, the

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Bloomberg's Speech By Michael...
Bloomberg's Speech Essay In 2010, The Guardian published an article, which contained a public
speech, delivered by the New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg. In his speech, Michael Bloomberg
defended the proposition of building a mosque near Ground Zero, with the hopes of appealing to the
audience by reminding them that Muslims are also New Yorkers and that denying them their
mosque, not only do the New Yorkers show double standards, they are also repeating history of
religious repression. In Bloomberg's speech, he uses a variation of rhetorical tools, in order to be
able to appeal to his audience in a way for them to understand his message clearly. Bloomberg
chooses to use a very little amount of logos as a way to appeal to its audience, and chooses instead
to use pathos as an appeal. Furthermore, Bloomberg is on the tipping point of exploiting pathos,
seeing that he has the Statue of Liberty behind him (P.1 l.1), he brings in the heroic actions during
9/11, and he uses the word freedom several times, when he talks about America. He even uses
peroration as he is finishing his speech. By using peroration, Bloomberg makes it clear to his
audience what the message is and indirectly summarises his speech. ... Show more content on

of pathos. The reason to that is, Bloomberg acknowledges his audience will contain a certain
amount of religious people and in order for the audience to agree with Bloomberg or at the very
least understand his message, Bloomberg must appeal to them through pathos, since that is the most
effective way. During Bloomberg's speech, there are several incidents where Bloomberg contradicts
himself. On page 1 line 6 it says as

The Life Of Joan Of Arc
"Since God had commanded it, it was necessary that I do it. Since God commanded it, even if I had
a hundred fathers and mothers, even if I had been a King's daughter, I would have gone
nevertheless." (Joan of Arc) Joan of Arc once said after she had gotten the call to follow God. Joan
of Arc was and still is an inspiration to everyone. By her early life she is recodnized, end of life, and
by how she influences the world today. Joan of Arc was a great leader and woman. Jeanne d'Arc, or
Joan of Arc in English, was born in 1412 in Domrémy, France while they were at war with England.
Of a poor farmer named Jacques d'Arc she was the daughter and her mother Isabelle or Romée. Her
mother taught her how to work at home and on the farm. About God and the Catholic Church she
only ever learned. When she hit the age of thirteen, she started hearing voices and having visions. In
a few of her visions were Saint Michael and Saint Catherine. To help fight for France against the
English she believed that they were all telling her. At sixteen years of age, she was forced into a
marriage by her father after taking a vow of chastity, so she went to the court and they said that she
would not be compelled to marry. Joan of Arc was an extremely stubborn and strong willed woman
from an early age who would do what she thought was right and what needed to be done. (Joan of
Arc) In the late spring of 1428 Joan of Arc went off to fight in the war. "The virgin who was

Executive summary
Racial Profiling is a big problem is society. Over time you become biased of certain groups which is
good and bad. Criminal profiling helps keep the bad guys off the streets. This maybe be also linked
with being racist according to the people stopped by police. As a police officer you never win
because no one wants to go to jail. It is very hard to Racial Profiling Vs Criminal Profiling Racism
is defined as "the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to
that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races." We live in
a nation mixed with many ethnicities, we are known as the "melting pot" of the world. Everyone
that was born here has a family member that immigrated here from a different country unless they
are of Native American decent. Often times people are stopped by police because of their race even
if they are not doing anything wrong. Many times when they are stopped by police and they did do
something wrong they swear up and down to the District Attorney or judge that the cop was racially
profiling him or her. Being a Police officer isn't easy. You see many things that the public does not

Food Ban Research Paper

  • 1. Food Ban Research Paper Should government have the freedom to limit its citizens' freedom? The answer is yes but the question is how much and for what reasons. The ban on large sugary drinks – more than 16 ounce– at food service establishments proposed by The New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg sparked a heated debate over this question. Proponents of the ban justified it by citing studies which showed excessive amount of sugar causes obesity and has many other serious negative effects on health. They argued that such consequences have negative effect for the whole society, in form of additional health care and social welfare cost. Opponents of the ban argued that it imposes an unjustified and unnecessary limit on personal freedom, does not reach the intended goal of limiting obesity, and sets precedent for excessive government overreach. Both sides have strong arguments, I am inclined to side with the opponents of the ban mainly because I am wary of unnecessary government overreach but I am on the border and ready to change my opinion in future. In June 2012, Bloomberg announced that food service establishments should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In this case a proponent of the deal can argue that scientific research leaves no doubt that excessive consumption of sugary beverages is harmful. As a result the government has a moral obligation to ban it even if it only hurts the consumer and no one else. To oppose this argument in a utilitarian context, the opponent must show that the ban does not lead to the intended consequences. They can argue that the ban does not include supermarkets, so the consumer can go and buy as much sugary beverage he/she wants somewhere else. In a legal context the question is whether based on the constitution and other governing laws in the country and the state, the city officials have the legal authority to impose such a ban. • 2. The Food Stamp Problem in the USA and Fingerprinting its... According to the article Millions Commit Food Stamp Fraud Every Year, "Food stamps represent one of the fastest growing federal programs in the U.S., 46 million Americans now receive assistance, but, it's a program ripe for abuse" (Volk, 2012). Though the idea behind food stamps is noble, and there is a definite need for the program; there are many problems that arise from the food stamps program. The primary problem in terms of decision–making is the fraud associated with the food stamp program. According to Tanner as quoted in the Millions Commit Food Stamp Fraud Every Year article, "The food stamp program has always had one of the highest rates of waste, fraud and abuse" (Volk, 2012). In an attempt to ensure that food stamps were being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Though the duplicate cases were caught, it is not documented how many of those cases were fraud. There is a lot of data that would need to be analyzed in order to fully understand the primary problem. One statistic to start with would be to find out how many people are in need of receiving food stamps. From there, it would be important to know how many of those people participate in the food stamp program, and how many people do not. For those who are eligible to receive benefits but chose not to, it would be important to find out the reason why they do not partake in the program. After the preliminary information surrounding the need of the program is assessed, the most helpful information would be to find out how many cases of fraud there is in a given year. Knowing how relevant the problem is that exists would be a great place to start in finding a solution. Additionally, for the controversial solutions that have been introduced, such as the fingerprinting methods, more substantial data needs to be analyzed to determine the success of the program. According to the podcast there were 600,000 New York citizens eligible for food stamps who did not apply for the program (NPR, 2012). However, it did not state whether this was directly related to the implementation of the fingerprinting program. It would be beneficial to find out why those people did not apply for the program, and how many of those people did not apply because of the stigma around being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Stop And Frisk Laws The stop and frisk laws in New York City illustrate Max Weber's idea of the societal role of laws because it shows how Weber distinguishes the law from things such as social norms and customs. In other words, Weber believes that rather than create laws that conform to the norms of society, they are made in accordance of the needs of a state. Weber defines law "as coercive order, an order that has the potential backing of the full force of the state," (Law, Status, Wealth, and Power 110). A state can support the law with full support in order to protect what it was made to protect. The stop and frisk laws are a great example of laws such as the ones that German lawyer Max Weber described. The idea of a stop and frisk is that a police officer can arrest a suspect only if they have enough suspicion that someone has committed a crime. A stop is only allowed when "a police officer observes unusual conduct which leads him reasonably to conclude in light of his experience that criminal activity may be afoot," (Toobin, TNY 2013). Some believe that the search and frisk law itself is not the issue, but that the practice by police officers is what is at question. Constantly targeting minorities is what the basis of the controversy behind this law is. As the numbers will show in the rest of this essay, they are the ones who are being most frequently searched and this is resulting in a high number of people who are against this law. • 6. Stop And Frisk During The United States There has always been tension between maintaining a safe society and abiding by the constitutional rights of its citizens. However the New York City aggressive program of Stop and Frisk have been widely criticized and considered unconstitutional. However, Stop and Frisk, per se is not unconstitutional unless people are being stopped illegally. It 's a crime prevention tactic that allows police officers to stop a person based on reasonable suspicion of criminal activity and conduct a frisk based on reasonable suspicion that the person is armed and or dangerous. Some argue this policy was created to target minorities. Most of the people who have been stopped and frisked under the program have been African American or Hispanic. This concerns ... It give people the right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue but upon probable cause. Moreover, the broken window theory is a theory behind Stop and Frisk. They both states that maintaining and monitoring urban environments in a well ordered condition may stop further vandalism and escalation into most serious crime. Stop and Frisk practice raise serious concerns over racial profiling, illegal stops and privacy rights. According to William J. Bratton "On average from 2002 to 2013 the number of individuals stopped and Frisked without any convictions was 87.6%. However, out of that 87.6% around 23% were black, 24% were Hispanic. And during all this stops the police officers recorded using force; police officers failed to states a specific suspected crime. Therefore many people had claimed "what will happen if cops were trained to do their field inquiries with respect and stop targeting people based on their color and race". Police officers sometimes use their power to make changes and preventing crimes from happening, however they sometimes abuse of it and used it to target people and discriminate them. According to the NYPD 's own report "around nine out of ten stopped and frisked New Yorkers have been completely innocent". Stop and Frisk basically grant police officers the authority to stop, ... We can not only deal with the terrible consequences caused by disaster, we need to find a method to reduce the damage of disaster. "Resilience" is put forward to deal with the natural disaster. As the greenhouse effect aggravates, frozen earth begins to melt, sea level starts to rise and precipitation patterns are changing. Followed by extreme weather, such as hurricane, tsunami, flood, extreme heat, drought, and tornado, becomes more frequent and more intense, additionally more difficult to be predicted. Due to this, in past ten years, natural disaster affects over 220 million people, and over 100 million US dollars are damaged per year; only in 2011, economic damage caused by urban disaster at over 380 billion US dollars. However, the largest damage is not the direct economic losses, but the cost of post–disaster reconstruction. The worst thing is, for some place which has chronic or frequent crises, for instance the drought in Horn of Africa, tsunami in Hawaiian Islands, hurricane in Louisiana and Florida, require deal with the threats frequently, rather than only deal with the consequences. • 9. Government Is Involved Too Much Into Health And Human... I personally believe that government is involved too much into health and human services. When I see the percentage of the funds that go into health and human services it's nice to see that the government recognizes the importance of keeping its citizens healthy and taking action to provide citizens with Medicaid and Medicare. The issue I have is the complexity and aggravation it causes the majority when they go a little to overboard. In my opinion its perfect when the government focuses on significant issues that affect the masses that helps everyone. In the past it would have been acceptable for state and local government to direct a huge portion of its funds into dealing with hookworm, an infection that in places like Georgia affected a total of 51.7 percent of people. This was a disease that affected everyone no matter what social status or life choices you had, in that time period. It was effective that they completed public work projects and worked on providing everyone with sanitary conditions and hospitals. Personally I think it's the governments job to protect the people even if it is not an economically smart decision. When government is getting to personal and aggressive by forcing people to pay for Medicare or Medicaid in which if the person doesn't not get Medicare or Medicaid results in them getting a separate tax to being doing a little too much. I think that the government crosses the line some times in the amount of benefits that they are giving out to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. America 's Constitution Was Built Upon The Fundamentals... America's Constitution was built upon the fundamentals that all citizens are created equal and tolerate one another. However in the recent years this tolerance for others beliefs has diminished, sprouting censorship, and sensitivity to others with different beliefs. Michael Bloomberg former mayor of New York City (NYC) and Harvard graduate and philtronphist then Wendy Kaminer, an attorney, author and social critic argues that intolerance needs to stop. Additionally, they believe that citizens should become more accepting of others and willing to converse despite their differences. Bloomberg wrote in his commencement speech at Harvard's graduation for the class of 2014 that, citizens of the U.S. should protect their freedom of speech and also to tolerate the beliefs of others. Likewise Kaminer argued in her essay A Civic Duty to Annoy published in "The Atlantic" that citizens have a responsibility to enter thought provoking discussions on important issues to build tolerance for different beliefs. Similarly both authors believe that Americans have to tolerate others beliefs to respect the First Amendment. Although, they present similar ideas Bloomberg's is better at persuading citizens to tolerate others' beliefs than Kaminer's essay. In Bloomberg's speech, he discussed that society should protect its freedom of speech and tolerate the diverse beliefs of others. • 12. Rhetorical Analysis OfNo Firemen At Ground Zero This 9 / 11? Rhetorical Analysis In the article "No Firemen at Ground Zero This 9/11?", Michael Burke uses multiple techniques to persuade his audience of the injustice committed against the first responders of 9/11 by excluding them from the 10 year anniversary at Ground Zero. Burke works towards the goal of having first responders be included in the memorial at Ground Zero, after Mayor Bloomberg claims there isn't enough room. Throughout the piece, Burke targets his argument at the influential readers of the Wall Street Journal in New York to get them to use their influence to put pressure on Bloomberg to get the first responders to be properly honored. Some of the most important strategy that Burke uses to persuade his audience is the structure of his piece, and his use of quotes. One of the key things that Burke did to persuade his audience of the significance of having first responders included in the memorial is the way he structured his piece. In most pieces, the thesis is placed near the beginning of the piece, but not in Burke's piece. Burke places his thesis as the very last sentence of his piece as a way to appeal to his audience. Given that his audience is a group of logically thinking businessmen starting with his thesis would only work against him, since they would most likely agree with the Mayor's viewpoint that there simply is not enough room. But to make his audience think less logically, Burke starts his piece with a long narrative describing the events of 9/11. Burke ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It helps those who are in the lower part of the social ladder by giving them a chance to climb the ladder of economic opportunity. Wall Street also helps boost other industries within America, thereby making it vital for the American economy. As Wall Street is one of the most important financial institutions in the world and provides more positive aspects for the economy than negative ones. Wall Street is extremely important for the American economy. Jeff Madrick, the editor of Challenge: The Magazine of Economic Affairs, in his piece "Does America need Wall Street", cites historian Alfred Chandler, who argued that the majority of the money put into America during industrialization came from corporate profits (Madrick). Those profits were able to make technological advances for all Americans. Daniel Indiviglio, former associate editor of the Atlantic, states that Wall Street is also important to the economy because it helps banks create capital (Indiviglio). That bank capital helps create jobs in the economy by causing more money to be available to be put into the economy. Wall Street plays an important part in the economy, and without it, America would face financial hardships. Young girls and boys eagerly dress up as knights, to help Saint George and Saint Michael conquer and tame the malicious dragon, through good actions and deeds. Along with fun activities, caramel apples, and motivating spirit, Michaelmas is a special way to prepare students for the challenging academic year ahead. Michaelmas is a whole school event, where grades first through twelve are assigned a different role, to put on a show that has its own unique twist each time. The roles include villagers (played by first through fourth grade), Knights (played by the fifth grade) the dragon (Played by the sixth grade), Lords and nobles (played by seventh through eleventh grade) and lastly, Saint George and Saint Michael (played by twelfth graders). The story told is a classic good vs. evil, preformed inside a giant circle, created by everyone attending the festival. A town of poor villages are fearful of a dragon, who is merciless and cruel. One day, the dragon attacks the village, leaving the villagers desperate and frightened. All the noble knights flee in fear, except for one, Saint George. • 17. History of Biblical Angels History of Biblical Angels Throughout history, you will find many religions discuss angels. But what is an angel? Is it a mythical creature with wings sent to protect you? Some may think so; others have different thoughts on the matter. But when did talk of angels first occur? Have they always been around? In this paper, I will attempt to define what an angel is and what they do. I will also discuss how angels differ between religions, as well as try to pinpoint the origin of angels. I will explain the similarities and differences between these religions and their ideas of angels. The term angel is derived from the Greek word angelos , meaning "messenger." This word represents an earlier Hebrew word, mal'akh that is also interpreted as the role of messenger or minister. It is safe to say that many people will regard angels as messengers between Heaven and earth. In many biblical stories, angels are sending messages. Some messages are announcements of birth like the ones that were sent to Abraham and to Samson's father. Other messages encourage actions as the ones did to Elijah and David. In these cases, angels were bringing messages from the divine world, or Heaven, to men and women in the earthly human world. It is believed that the messages with angels also work in the reversed sense as well; meaning from human being to angel to God. It is said that 'the soul speaks to the angel, the angel to the cherub, the cherub to God.' This type of communication would explain the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Their personal and life experiences has helped them to find their passion and motivation to become today's entrepreneurs. These people end up leaving behind a great legacy. Michael Bloomberg is an example of a great entrepreneur and philanthropist. He came from a family of immigrants, where he learned the values of hard work and humility, and because of it, he is known as a business tycoon in today's world. He is the CEO and co–founder of his own company, Bloomberg LP. He also has held a political office becoming the mayor of one of the world's most diverse cities across the world, New York City. According to chapter 5 it states "leadership is an institutional capacity, not solely an individual trait, in many successful companies" (p.53). No great feat is ever done by a single person, but by a team who is there to support you and help you overcome hurdles and obstacles. Michael Bloomberg became a political figure; he was an entrepreneur who saw potential in himself and pushed forward so far as to run for office. Enforced the laws created by his predecessor and enacted new ones to keep caring for a city that had been through so much. He won office to have his opinions heard and implement his ideas, but to do so he needed a team who shared his ideals. I'll say he was an architect structural leader, as he delegated tasks according to the potential each of the people in his cabinet had. In starting his company he shared the ... In fact, Milton does not hide the reality that his "eyes, that roll in vain...find no dawn"(Paradise Lost, 3.22–23). The light that Milton refers to, however, is not just physical, but it is also spiritual. There is a third type of blindness that Milton addresses, blindness from knowledge. Milton is concerned with this form of blindness in a number of works, perhaps most notably Areopagitica. The acquisition of knowledge plays a vital role in Paradise Lost: the fall of Adam and Even relies on their attainment of knowledge; the decision to eat the fruit is blasphemous because Adam and Eve know that it is forbidden to them; Adam embarks on an educational mission as he asks Raphael questions in an attempt to gain more knowledge about the world around him. However, not all knowledge can be attained by Adam and Eve, which complicates the justice of the fall. As John Milton explores the nature of knowledge in Paradise Lost, the validity and visibility of this knowledge lead Adam and Eve to an unjust fall. With the exception of God, knowledge is limited for all the characters in the text. When Adam asks Raphael a number of questions concerning his creation and his duties towards God, Raphael readily answers. However, when Adam inquiries about the cosmological universe, Raphael provides an answer but quickly reminds Adam that this knowledge "from Man or Angel the great Architect/Did wisely to conceal, and not ... • 21. Global Poverty And Its Effects On Poverty Essay One of the most successful efforts to reduce and more effectively measure poverty has been Mayor Michael Bloomberg's Center for Economic Opportunity (CEO) in New York City. This paper will explain how CEO was and still is so successful in combatting poverty and will argue that its tactics should be implemented in cities across the nation. Poverty is one of the most important issues that the modern world has attempted to confront. For the most part it has been a huge success. Extreme global poverty has been cut in half in the past 20 years. This statistic is staggering, and not enough people realize how successful industrialization and the globalized world have been at eradicating extreme poverty. While this should be celebrated, there is a different problem that the United States faces while looking inward. The poverty rates within inner cities have not been following the global trends and decreasing, rather they have been on the rise. CEO has been able to turn New York City from one of the nations highest poverty rates in large cities to one of the lowest. For this reason their tactics should be looked at closely as a model for cities across the nation and across the world. When Michael Bloomberg was elected mayor of New York City in 2005, he declared the "War on Poverty". While this sentiment has been echoed throughout United States history, the Bloomberg approach differed slightly. Bloomberg was going to wage a data driven war on urban poverty within his city. In ... Narcissism in John Milton’s Paradise Lost Essay Narcissism in John Milton's Paradise Lost When Eve eats the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, her decision to tell Adam of her disobedience turns on two suppositions. If her transgression is kept secret from God, Eve's augmented knowledge might increase Adam's love for her, and perhaps cause her to be more equal or even superior to Adam. Even though Eve was created comparable to Adam as his helper, she refers to Adam as her "Author and Disposer." Furthermore, she says that while God is Adam's law, Adam is her law. Eve leaves when Adam and Raphael discuss astronomy, her "reason" not suitable for this subject matter, and she only overhears Raphael's final warning about Satan. Information is power: Eve's status as Adam's "weaker" is clear. During the conversation with Raphael, Adam relates his first experiences of passion with Eve, an emotion mixed with his love. While Raphael praises Adam's capacity to love, he disparages Adam's ability to control his passion. Adam should love, cherish, and honour Eve, but not subject himself to her. Moreover, Raphael stresses Adam's need to love God, and the potential conflict between his love for God and his love for Eve. To love God, is to obey God. For Adam, obeying God means never to eat of the Tree of Knowledge of good and evil. While God leaves Adam free to will and in his own will free, his will though free is mutable. • 24. Michael Is The Savior Jesus Christ In Revelation12 : 12-12... Revelation 12:7–9 is a vision seen by John that speaks about the war that will occur in heaven. The passage says,"Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down―that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him." The passage begins by stating that there will be a war in heaven, one between Michael and Satan. Michael is God's archangel whose name means "one like God". This leads to the possibility that Michael is Jesus Christ. Jesus has a nature "like God" and can be argued that the word "archangel" might mean not "ruling angel" but "the ruler of the angels." Add to the fact that the word archangel is never used in the plural... "(Becker). These facts are strong evidence that Michael is the savior Jesus Christ. Satan is the dragon that is referred to in the text. The dragon is not specifically described in this particular passage, but earlier in the chapter there is a glimpse as to what he looked like. According to Revelation 12:3, "...a great red dragon having seven heads ten horns, and on his head were seven diadems." The New York City aggressive program of Stop and Frisk have been widely criticized and considered unconstitutional. However, Stop and Frisk, per se is not unconstitutional unless people are being stopped illegally. It 's a crime prevention tool that allows police officers to stop a person based on reasonable suspicion of criminal activity and to conduct a frisk based on reasonable suspicion that the person is armed. Some argue this policy was created to target minorities. Most of the people who have been stopped and frisked under this program have been African American or Hispanic. This concerns citizens and makes them oppose the policy because they believe its racial profiling and guided by color. Stop and frisk is now one of the biggest controversies in United States. The Stop-Question and Frisk Program The black or white, either–or and this or that misconceptions that are common in conversations with children seems to be arising over the Stop and Frisk Law in New York City. It has long been an issue of debate over whether it is a form of practicing racial profiling since its implementation. Arguments between advocates and critics of the law appear to be so incompatible that people are simply taking sides rather than trying to push the discussion forward. Frankly, supporters and protestors of the practice have established their opinions with incomplete information and lack of adequate critical reasoning. While those in favor have failed to admit to the apparent existence of racial profiling, those who are against the law only focus on racial profiling and do not participate in the broader discussion of whether or not it actually brings safety to the city. The conversation might be able to move forward if both sides were to emphasize on the most crucial issue of whether safety trumps civil rights. The Stop–Question–and–Frisk Program, more commonly known as "stop and frisk" or 250s, authorizes police to stop and question pedestrians and frisk them for weapons or other contrabands. • 31. What Is The Scale Of Nature In Paradise Lost Carly Merryman ENGL 328 Stoll 3 October 2014 Paradise Lost: Books V & VI Milton's scale of nature, while appearing linear, allows the creatures within in it to "ascend to God" by "steps," (V.512). This creates a dynamic scale that would enable a particular being the ability to move up and down the scale based on its behaviors, and align itself closer to God. However, an animal or a human can only climb so far. No matter how virtuous an animal was it could never surpass a human because it is lacking the spiritual essence that God awarded to man. Similarly, a human, while living, could never attain the same closeness to God as an angel. So while this allows for some degree of mobility, each sect of the scale is confined within the parameters that God set forth. If the creation was "one first matter all" as Raphael says to Adam then that would mean that all matter came from God. Not only does this reconcile science and religious beliefs because as Newton's First Law says, "Matter can neither be created nor destroyed," but it also asserts that all matter begins as being inherently good. This explanation disqualifies ex nihlo because as science says there can be no absolute nothing. Milton's attempts to resolve the religion versus science issues are made stronger by his references to Galileo and astronomy. But Milton's version of the creation tackles the problem of absolute nothingness. If there were absolute nothingness before matter, then that nothingness would have had to ... One of the most debated and controversial topics in New York City is the Stop and Frisk policy, and the impact it has on police, Latinos, and African Americans. By organizing the piece the way Burke did, it allowed him to shape the reader's viewpoint of first responders before he even began arguing his point that first responders must be honored at Ground Zero on the ten year anniversary of 9/11. Another powerful technique that Burke uses to persuade his audience is he uses quotes. Burke uses quotes from people who were at the scene of 9/11 themselves. • 35. A Rhetorical Analysis Of Bloomberg's Speech By Michael... Bloomberg's Speech Essay In 2010, The Guardian published an article, which contained a public speech, delivered by the New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg. In his speech, Michael Bloomberg defended the proposition of building a mosque near Ground Zero, with the hopes of appealing to the audience by reminding them that Muslims are also New Yorkers and that denying them their mosque, not only do the New Yorkers show double standards, they are also repeating history of religious repression. In Bloomberg's speech, he uses a variation of rhetorical tools, in order to be able to appeal to his audience in a way for them to understand his message clearly. By her early life she is recodnized, end of life, and by how she influences the world today. Joan of Arc was a great leader and woman. Jeanne d'Arc, or Joan of Arc in English, was born in 1412 in Domrémy, France while they were at war with England. Of a poor farmer named Jacques d'Arc she was the daughter and her mother Isabelle or Romée. Her mother taught her how to work at home and on the farm. About God and the Catholic Church she only ever learned. When she hit the age of thirteen, she started hearing voices and having visions. In a few of her visions were Saint Michael and Saint Catherine. To help fight for France against the English she believed that they were all telling her. At sixteen years of age, she was forced into a marriage by her father after taking a vow of chastity, so she went to the court and they said that she would not be compelled to marry. Joan of Arc was an extremely stubborn and strong willed woman from an early age who would do what she thought was right and what needed to be done.
