People first – VSO’s new global strategy 2010 Climate change becomes a new VSO priority VSO and Climate Change 2011 : Tragically, it is the poorest and most vulnerable who bear the brunt of climate change, since vulnerabilities caused by climate change compound vulnerabilities that exist already.
- 23. The main driving force is population growth. Malawi’s population has tripled since 1966. In 2010, it reached over 15 million and is increasing at a rate of 2.9% (GOM, 2009). What drives environmental degradation in Malawi?
- 24. A high percentage of Malawi’s population build their livelihoods on natural resource exploitation. Agriculture, fishery, and forestry collectively contribute to more than a third of Malawi’s GDP.

THE WATERS PROJECT OVERVIEW • Water Futures: Towards Equitable Resource Strategies (WATERS) • PROJECT OVERALL GOAL: Reducing the vulnerability of the rural poor to climate change impacts by linking Local Government, Civil Society and Community to enable equitable Climate Proof Integrated Water Management. • PROJECT APPROACH: Ecosystem service approach for water resources management to be developed in consultation with villages and other local stakeholders.

- Maintain awareness and apply climate change good practice among all VSO staff, volunteers, partners and targeted community members. Develop priority interventions that support the key focus (education, health, HIV & AIDS and secure livelihoods) and target groups in VSO Malawi’s CSP. Strengthen the capacity and systems of the Government of Malawi for effective implementation of the national climate change programme while promoting a pro-poor focus. Strengthen advocacy by civil society organisations for the development and effective implementation of pro poor policies on climate change.
