1. Folkdancesaredances that aredeveloped bypeoplethat reflect the lifeofthe
peopleofa certaincountry orregion. Not allethnicdances are folkdances; for
example, ritualdances or dances ofritualoriginare notconsidered tobefolkdances.
Ritualdances areusuallycalled "Religious dances" becauseof their purpose.
Theterms "ethnic" and "traditional"areused whenit is required toemphasizethe
culturalrootsof thedance. In thissense, nearly allfolkdances areethnic ones. If
somedances, such as polka,cross ethnic boundariesand even cross theboundary
between "folk"and "ballroomdance", ethnic differences areoftenconsiderable
enough to mention, e.g., Czech polkavs. Germanpolka.

2. Serbian folk dancingis an old tradition and a strong element in the Serbian culture. The traditional
dancesareofsocialfunction,bringingthecommunityandfamiliestogether at various important days such
asweddings,ChristmasorEaster.The dances canbe part of performance art (theatre,i.e.part ofhistorical
events) andsocial life. Kolo is the traditional collective folkdance,where a group ofpeople (usuallyseveral
dozen,atthe veryleastthree)holdingeachotherbythehands or aroundthe waist,dance,ideallyina circle,
hencethe name.Thereisalmostnomovementabovethewaist.Eachregionhas at least one unique kolo. The
dance is accompanied by instrumental two-beat music with the same name, made most often with an
accordiaon,but also with other instruments:frula (traditional kindofthe flute),tamburica,sargija,zurla,
gajde,tapan,or harmonica.
Folk dancing in Serbia is verypopular.There are hundreds of folkensembles inthe whole country.Serbia
even has the national enseble called"Kolo" which represents Serbiantradition,customs anddances inthe
countryandabroad.Theentire ensemble is professional,meaningtheyare financedform the state budget.
Serbian folk dancing, being so live and rhytmic, always wins first awards on international folk dancing
festivals.
InterkulturaSerbiahas goodcooperationwith several folkensembles.Some ofour exchange students have
joinedthem andthat has beenanhounour for the ensembles where theyhave danced
