The document discusses the creator's mood board and key influences for their magazine project on musical theater. The mood board includes images of magazine covers, backstage scenes, costume designs, and performers to represent the types of content that will be featured. The creator analyzed existing magazines and posters for layout inspiration and identified their color theme. They plan to visit the Grand Opera House in York to photograph a rehearsal or backstage areas for articles on the rehearsal process and upcoming shows. Broadway theater and the popular musical Les Miserables are also influences, as the creator will look at their promotional materials for style ideas and source content about well-known musicals.

WRITING A CONCERT REPORT
Instructors in introductory music courses often require students to write one or more concert reports during a semester. Here are some guidelines for the preparation of such an assignment: first, a few suggestions on working with your own notes; second, points to consider for the content of your report; third, some information about usages or conventions in writing about music; and finally, an example of a concert report.
TRANSFORMING YOUR NOTES INTO A REPORT
You should plan to expand your notes into a complete report very soon after the concert—the same evening or during the next day or so.
It is often helpful to begin with an outline and then to write a rough draft. (If your instructor hands out a printed form for concert reports, that will serve as the outline.) Next, polish and edit your draft to produce the final version. Remember to check your grammar and the spellings of names (especially foreign names) and musical terms.
Below are recommendations for the actual content of your report—what to write. Following that, there is a section on vocabulary and usages, or conventions, involved in referring to musical works—that is, how to write about music.
WHAT TO WRITE: THE CONTENT OF A REPORT
The Concert as a Whole You should begin your report with a brief description of the concert attended, including the name and type of the performing group or soloists, the place, the date and time, and the music you heard.
You will also want to note whether the performers were attempting a historically "authentic" program. For example, in music by Johann Sebastian Bach, was a harpsichord (rather than a piano) used? For a symphony by Haydn or Mozart, was the size of the orchestra reduced? Did the performers use old instruments, or reconstructions of old instruments?
Then, you may want to describe your general reaction to the concert. Did you enjoy it? Did this event make you feel like going to other concerts in the near future?

5. Mood Board Analysis
I have added some images onto my mood board to represent the kind of images I want to show on my magazine. For
example there are some images of magazine/poster covers, there are some images of what happens backstage, images
of costume designs, etc.
The images above are some
examples of what I used on my
mood board to show what happens
in the process of rehearsal. For my
final project, it would be interesting
if I could go backstage to a
performance that may be in process
and take some photos of what’s
going on behind the scenes.
I could then write about things like
‘upcoming shows’ and maybe talk
about the process of rehearsals, etc.
I looked at some existing
posters/magazine covers
to help me get ideas of
how I could layout my
magazine cover or DPS. I
know that I want to
have quite a lot of
colour in my magazine
so I want to look more
into existing musical
theatre magazines so I
can get more of an idea
of the different images,
layouts and colour
themes used.
I am hoping that I am
able to get some
pictures of different
sections/rooms in a
theatre, like the
auditorium, Orchestra
pit, etc. I could talk
about the different
theatres there are in
the local area and
‘what’s on’.
I also included images of
actors/performers who
people may see in some
musical theater shows. I,
personally, feel I am able to
do this, especially as I am
able to reach out to
someone who is a performer
in musicals. I could interview
this person or ask her
questions about musical
theater for my article.
My main purpose with creating this mood board
was to give me ideas of the type of pictures I
want to add in my magazine and what I want to
talk about in my article.
6. Key Influences
Les Miserables-The Musical
‘Les Miserables’ is a musical phenomenon, it is played in 42 different countries in 42 different
languages. I may include some information about this musical in my magazine seen as this is
a popular musical and I, personally, enjoy this musical.
There are different brochures for this musical and posters that you will find for this musical
which I can get inspiration from. For example, I can look at the different fonts used, and the
colours used, and the layouts. The main colour theme for Les Miserables is the colours red,
white and blue (the colours of the French flag) I could take this and use these colours for my
theme if I talk about anything related to Les Mis.
As Les Miserables is so popular and a well known musical, my magazine could also be more
appealing to an audience who enjoys watching musicals.
My magazine won’t be based on the musical, Les Miserables, however I will
look at existing magazines that are Les Mis related as this will give me
inspiration for a musical magazine.
7. Key Influences
Grand Oprah House-York
The Grand Oprah House is a theatre in York. Plays, musicals, opera, ballet and other musical
and theatrical events take place here. I have visited the Grand Oprah House on multiple
occasions and I feel that this would be a good place to visit for my project.
Firstly, I could visit backstage of the opera house, and take some photos for my magazine. This
means that in my magazine I could talk about what happens backstage during a performance,
the crew and the structures built.
There may even be rehearsals going on at the Oprah House, so this may be something I could
look into and I could go and visit while rehearsal is taking place. I would like to get some
action shots, possibly during a mid-rehearsal.
The Oprah house always has upcoming shows so this means I can also research into how
often musicals are performed there, what type of musicals are played there and also what
shows are going to be shown. This may be useful as I might want to have a section in my
magazine about upcoming shows or ‘what’s on’ as I will talk about musicals/plays in the local
area (York)
8. Key Influences
The Broadway Theatre-London
The Broadway Theatre in London, Catford, is a large theatre built in 1932. It has 2
auditoriums, it has a 900-seat main theatre and an 80-seat studio theatre. It’s Programme
consists of a diverse mix of theatre and music, including a pantomime season featuring star
names, stand up comedy, nostalgia shows, and more. The majority of Broadway shows are
musicals so Broadway shows are a large influence when it comes to talking about musical
theatre. There are currently 41 Broadway Theatres in New York, US.
When people think of Broadway they think of musicals so this is why Broadway is such a big
part in the theatre and performing industry. For my magazine, I could look more into
Broadway shows and the theatre industry. There are loads of programmes, posters, etc for
Broadway shows which I can take influence from.
