Fluorine is a micronutrient mineral found in bones and teeth that is essential for bone and dental enamel formation. It is obtained mainly from drinking water as well as foods like seafood, cheese, and tea. Fluorine intake is beneficial up to certain levels but can cause dental or skeletal fluorosis in excess. The recommended level of fluoride in drinking water is 0.5-0.8 mg/L and over 1.5 mg/L can cause dental fluorosis visible on front teeth. Intake of 3.0-6.0 mg/L may lead to skeletal fluorosis while over 10 mg/L can result in crippling fluorosis.
