I teach anatomy, physiology and human biology at Modesto Junior
College in the Central Valley of CA. Most of my students are hoping to
get into the nursing program or some other allied health program.
My undergraduate degree is in biochemistry and my graduate work
was in exercise physiology. Both degrees are from University of
California at Berkeley. Go BEARs! I have been teaching for 25 years
and still enjoy it although I am growing tired of correcting labs and lab
practicums.
I have a wonderful husband and 2 fun sons, a Navy diver and a
college student. I live on a few acres with dogs, minidonkeys, horses, llamas and cows in a little town, Oakdale, which has
more cows than people.
I love sailing, especially in the San Francisco Bay, knitting, tennis
doubles, and hiking anywhere but especially Yosemite National
Park, a short drive from my house.

Why flip the classroom?
Khahn Academy on TED talk
Traditional lectures are passive
Students come with some knowledge of the subject before the
lecture
A flipped classroom, allows for more active learning
Students are more engaged

How to flip?
Don’t just assign reading, assign Learnsmart, LS
Assign points for LS/ syllabus
It’s so easy to assign a LS/ live tour
Assign LS before the lecture
It’s a good study tool, not an assessment tool
Everyone has the ability to score 100%
Hopefully, they open their book
Students aren’t comfortable, but ….

Reports
Look at LS report
See where students are struggling
Focus on the difficult material

Best Practices
Assignment set up suggestions/due date
Policies; how quizzes differ from LS
How to get the students to buy into LS
LMS (learning management system) integration, BB
