Ryan Bailey Patterson s Resistance And Resilience
In Ryan bailey Patterson s article, Resistance and Resilience Patterson discusses the impact that
politicalized art can have on a movement. Patterson articulates her argument by first giving historical
context to the violent phenomena and then explaining the impact that politicalized art had on the anti
feminicide movement in Cuidad Juarez as the art functioned as a communicator between the women
of Cuidad Juarez and the outside world. The art not only communicated the problem in the city but
helped give context to the problem and excited enough emotion in the outside party to transform the
grassroots movement into a transnational movement. Through a wide range of evidence, Patterson
supports the idea that politicalized art is an effective way to create social awareness of a social ...

Patterson in his article , Resistance and Resilience uses a wide range of evidence as she describes the
origins of the anti feminicide movement. Patterson in her article gives historical context of the
conditions of women in the Cuidad Jaurez and talks about the effects of the Maquiladora Program
which replaced the Bracero program in 1965. Patterson claims that , Cuidad Juarez became a hunting
ground for innocent female victims with the establishment of the Maquiladora Program. Patterson
backs this claim by providing evidence of how the program led to a job crisis which led to the creation
of the National boarder Development Program which allowed foreign corporations to outsource their
production to mexico where the labor was cheaper and the finished exports had little to no tariffs. This
program forced to women to look for any available jobs.

Memo of Dollar General
Relevant Economic Trends With the exception of supercenters such as Costco and BJ s, the fastest
growing portion of the overall retail industry in the United States during the past decade has been in
the dollar store segment. From 2000 2005 dollar stores had a compound annual growth rate (CAGR)
of 10.2% which was nearly double the 5.6% CAGR in the retail industry as a whole. Sales from these
discount stores were $24.7 billion in 2000 and were expected to more than double to $51.1 billion in
2009 (Exhibit 8). Two main drivers fueled this growth trend. The first was a cultural shift in
consumers towards a bargain based mentality. This was spurred by an increased presence of retailers
with a low cost strategy including Wal Mart, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They emphasize the use of even dollar prices on most items to conveniently make it easy for
customers to track how much they are spending before they get to the checkout line. This coupled
with their focused assortment of quality goods allows easy in and out shopping and saves the customer
time. DG competes against big box retailers such as Wal Mart through price and convenience rather
than price and selection. The average DG store is 6,900 square feet with about 4,900 stock keeping
units (SKUs) serving customers who live within five miles of the store. The average Wal Mart on the
other hand is over 100,000 square feet containing more than 75,000 SKUs and serves many customers
living more than five miles away. Strategically limiting the number of brands and sizes as well as
purchasing fast turning SKUs gives DG the leverage to negotiate low purchase prices when bargaining
with suppliers based on the higher volume of individual SKUs being purchased. This allows them to
offer competitive prices while achieving price parity with big box retailers selling the same items and
on occasion even beating these competitor s prices. Focusing on both price and convenience also
allows DG to compete and differentiate themselves from other small convenience, discount, and
drugstore retailers who typically focus on either price or convenience but

Critical Analysis Of Sustainability Principles
Essay Critical Analysis of Sustainability Principles submitted by: Tanvi Rawat
Student ID: S3523444
Q.2 what is the relationship between sustainability and anthropogenic climate change, and how can an
understanding of these linkages be used to guide policy from the global to the local scale?
Ans. Sustainability is promoting social, economic growth with preserving the environment, whereas
the Anthropogenic Climate change is influencing natural and human living conditions. With an
increase in the risk of disaster which is turning to be a constrain in development and growth. The
anthropogenic generation of greenhouse gases (GHGS) is continuously making the temperature rise.
The energy use for industrial production and goods, services since last 200 years changed the
atmospheric conditions. The contents of greenhouse gases like CO2 (carbon dioxide), N2, O (nitrous
oxide), O3 (tropospheric ozone), CH4 (methane) (Trenberth, 1992), which is the main cause of natural
disaster like draught and flood which ultimately becomes a cause of economic loss. (Pachauri and
Reisinger, 2007) For sample During 1980s the financial misfortunes from dry seasons totalled a few
hundred million U.S. dollars in Africa, its seen that dry spells and surges are more basic since most
recent 30 years, around 25% of the contemporary African populace encounters high water stress.
Around 69% of the populace live under states of relative water wealth. Henceforth the

The Pros And Cons Of The Columbian Exchange
The trade of biological and cultural aspects defines The Columbian Exchange, also called the Great
Biological Exchange, for the first time Europeans decided to connect with the Western Hemisphere.
This was important because the Europeans actually gained more by taking advantage of the Indians;
animals, plants, and diseases, these transactions marked a whole new beginning in the history of
America. Two isolated parties explored their differences, and by that, they enriched their biological
and cultural lives. (Shi and Tindall 336 37).
The beginning of the exchange happens, the plants and foods. The diets of the two cultures happened
to be different, and so they altered them. The Western Hemisphere had many new different options for
the Europeans to choose from. There were three new foods that the Europeans did not recognize, but
took advantage; corn, which was called maize, it basically grew everywhere, sweet and white
potatoes, and many different kinds of beans that the Europeans loved. (Shi and Tindall 37). Some
other examples of the food the Indians shared with the Europeans are peanuts, peppers, tomatoes,
pumpkins, pineapples, avocados, cacao, chewing gum, and the list goes on. The Europeans, on the
other hand, presented to the indigenous people, the greatest foods that still go on to this day, which
are, rice, wheat, barley, wine grapes, melons, coffee, olives, bananas, daisies, and many more. The
transactions of these foods were so important to both cultures because when they combined them, they
were amazingly rich in taste. Europeans did not have pepper, but when adding it to the food it became
something so delicious it could not be real. Also, they did not know that in the future young people
would conquer the New World with the positive effect that corn left them (Shi and Tindall 37). Both of
these groups basically repaired their culture for good.
On the other hand, the Europeans never in their life saw iguanas, armadillos, anacondas in real life,
nor the Indians knew what horses, pigs, and chickens were; of course, after the exchange, the
Americas were full of these interesting animals from the European culture (Shi and Tindall 37). Pigs,
cows, and horses were a new beginning to the Americas,

The Balance Scorecard Enhances
According to Kaplan R. S. amp; Norton D. P. (1996), the balance scorecard enhances the traditional
financial measures with standards for performance in three non financial areas like relationship
between company and customer, internal business process and, learning and growth. It will assist the
company to coordinate its operation and ensure all businesses activities parallel to the company s
strategies. The balance scorecard consists of four processes that combine short term activities to long
term objectives. These processes include translating the vision, communicating and linking, business
planning and, feedback and learning.
The main objective of the first process translating the vision is to clarify the understanding of ... Show

Nevertheless, balance scorecard can indicate the changing nature of technology and competitive
advantages. It is used to supplements the conventional financial reporting.
Balance scorecard can communicate the nonfinancial measures into the strategic management via four
perspectives which include financial; customer; internal business processes; learning and growth.
These four perspectives are in cause and effect basis where the acquired of necessary learning and
growth can improve the internal business processes and then achieve customers satisfaction and
finally accomplish the desired financial goal or objective. The construction of strategy maps are top
down, begin with the goal or objective and then the means that direct to the destination. Financial
perspective generally includes increase of shareholder value or economic value. This can be done
through revenue growth and productivity where revenue growth involves expending new products,
new markets and new customers or enhance sales to current consumers. Productivity strategy involves
lowering cost or improves assets utilization effectiveness. Customer perspective consists of customer
value proposition that differentiate companies through operational excellence, customer intimacy
excellence and product leadership. Internal processes perspective can be identified after the
identification of financial and customer perspective. This perspective includes internal business

How Is King Arthur Real
Throughout the centuries King Arthur s story has continued to develop through speculation,
conjecture, and evidence; however, much of this has long been contested. Few people argue he exists
for lack of evidence and an abundance of mystery. The majority of Arthurian enthusiasts believe he
never existed or was a character created by combining the best traits of heroes at the time. Some just
do not care, these people get from Arthur inspiration and courage, whether he was real or not. In most
cases King Arthur being real would just be icing on the cake. Such a discovery would be life changing
not only would it put to rest all the controversy that has perplexed people for centuries, but it would
also bestow credibility where it is due. On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Britons on the other hand find Bran to be fact and know him as Brân the Blessed and a hero. Bran
in this case is not Artuir s brother, but his brother in law. As there is only a correlation of names no
conclusion can be made on who was and was not there. There is one popular belief that King Arthur
was one individual or the product of the combination of several people. There s little hard evidence on
who Arthur could have been based off of: for the most part it is speculation. The Real King Arthur is
an article on a website called lordsandladies.org that is strictly used for educational purposes. In this
article four historical figures are presented as being inspiration for Arthur, the first runner up is
Magnus Clemens Maximus. Maximus was a Celt and general who became the nephew of the Welsh
King Coel Godhebog through marriage. Maximus s base was Carmarthen or Caernarvon. Another
article from The History Files confirms that King Godhebog was indeed Maximus s uncle through
marriage. There is one flaw in this conclusion and that is due to Monmouths The History of the Kings
of Britain which states that Maximus was of Imperial descent and that Constantius was his ancestor.
Maximus s dad was Maximianus who was the

Examples Of Inventions During The European Industrial...
Inventions during the European Industrial Revolution
There are many inventions during the European Industrial Revolution that impacts society for
Europeans. There are inventions that made other inventions better and also inventions that
revolutionized inventions that we already possessed. A man named James Kay in 1733 invented one of
the inventions called the Flying Shuttle. He built it, supposedly, with nothing more that a pocketknife
and his tool. The flying shuttle improved on the old hand loom. A worker pulled a cord rope back and
forth to send a small piece of canoe shaped wood, or shuttle, flying across a wood frame through
threads to weave cloth. The flying shuttle was a small improvement and was still powered by man
other than coal, wind, water. Nonetheless it began the crucial process by which unskilled workers
could produce more cloth with machines that skilled workers could produce by hand. This invention
in my opinion made a big impact to the European Industrial Revolution. I think just about all of these
inventions are very good for society, and changed the world as we know it today.
Starting in the 1760s, the spinning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Steam Engine was the energy behind the most advanced textile inventions, such as the spinning
mule and the power loom. It symbolized the transition from human power in homes to machine power
in factories. The steam engine was originally invented in England to pull water out of coal mines. For
thousands of years, wood from local forests had been the main fuel in England, as well as the main
material for shipbuilding and housing construction. By the end of the seventeenth century few forests
remained. By the early seventeen hundreds, the easy to open coal pits were gone, and mine shafts as
deep as two hundred feet were dug to find it. Finally, in 1708, Thomas Newcomen invented a simple
engine that used steam to pump water out of

Traditional Methods Of Genetic Improvement
1. Literature review 1 . 1. Traditional methods of genetic improvement Farmers have been making
mate selection decisions for the improvement of livestock for generations. Whilst progress was
evident, it was slow until the mid 20th century, when substantial gains in genetic improvement in both
livestock and crops was observed. A good example of this progress is the increase in milk yield of US
Holstein cattle which doubled from 6000kg per lactation in the 1960s to 1200kg per lactation in 2000.
Up to 50% of this improvement has been accredited to genetic improvement (Dekkers and Hospital,
2002). These gains were brought about using quantitative techniques to estimate the genetic and
environmental components of traits, as well as an improved ability to disseminate genetic material,
such as cryopreservation of semen/embryos and artificial insemination. Whilst the genetic architecture
of a trait is presumed to be complex, it is not known (Hill, 2010). Best Linear Unbiased Prediction
(BLUP)methodology utilises a linear mixed model to combine phenotypic and pedigree information to
calculate an individual s estimated breeding value (EBVs), which is used as a measure of an organism
s additive genetic worth (Henderson, 1975). This technique was quickly adopted as the standard
method to calculate EBVs. Despite this success, BLUP does have disadvantages. Without phenotypic
information about an individual or it s close relatives it is not capable of calculating EBVs. Genomic

Mixed Incontinence Case Study
The patient in the case study would most likely have mixed incontinence. The two forms of
incontinence the patient would suffer from are transient and functional. The patient is currently taking
Lasix 80 mg by mouth every 12 hours and would this would be the contributable factor for transient
incontinence. Functional incontinence in this case would be from the patient being unable to make it
to the toilet because he needs two people to assist him when moving. If the patient was not taking the
Lasix, he would still most likely suffer from functional incontinence. The patient has also had an
intraoperative left cerebrovascular accident (CVA) which can also be a factor for incontinence but
there is not enough information given to make that determination. Although, a CVA can be a factor for
incontinence it is not always the cause. The Lasix 80 mg twice a day combined with the patient not
being able to go to the toilet on his own would lead to a diagnosis of mixed incontinence (Ebersole
Hess , 2014). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Toilet substitutes include urinal, bedpan and commode. The patient would be able to use the urinal
without assistance and lessen the chance of incontinence. The absorbent bed pads would give the
patient protection if he is not able to get to the commode or urinal fast enough and provide a barrier
between the sheets and his skin as most of the pads are moisture absorbent. The commode next to the
bed would be the last resort in interventions as the patient would still need assistance to transfer from
the bed. Putting these interventions into place would help the patient with incontinence and give him a
sense of self help (Ebersole Hess ,

Personal Narrative-My Hero s Journey To Freedom
We watch Him gain His power legally, through the system. We watch as He turns us against the ones
we used to call our friends. We watch Him use the Proclamation, a way to weed out those who didn t
agree with His philosophies. We watch those that fight disappear. We watch others try to seek refuge,
only to be sent back. We watch other countries turn their backs to us like we did them. We watch as
we slowly, but surely, end up alone.
Through all this, I try and work by myself. After the last attempt, most people are too afraid to try and
rebel publicly, so we hide in the shadows. My main goal for months has been to recruit those on the
outskirts of society and send them the resistance s way. The scientists, the activists, the ones with

Should 16 Year Olds Be Allowed To Vote Essay
According to Franklin D Roosevelt, Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote
except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting .
(Brainyquote). The right to vote allows the people to have a say and a voice on society and the people
who run it. However, many say young Americans do not understand or care about politics and should
not have an opinion on who runs the country. Lowering the voting age to 16 in the United States will
help today s youth; 16 year olds are old enough to make educated decisions and have a strong voice on
this nation s current issues. Initially, 16 year olds should be allowed to vote because they show they

in local elections will enable them to vote before leaving home and high school, and establish a
lifelong habit of voting. (Fairvote).Furthermore, students are engaged in political discussions and
arguments everyday in school. In high school students start to understand government and realize
what is happening in society. As a student, teens are taught to have an opinion about the world around

teens the right to vote is not only unfair, it is violating their 15th Amendment right. The 15th

Comparing War Poems Essays
Comparing War Poems Died of Wounds and Suicide in the Trenches are two poems, which I will be
comparing the similarities and differences, which were written by the same author. Both these poems
were written by a person called Siegfried Sasson, who wrote most of his poems during the World War
One, which outlined how bad the war was to those at home after suffering from being Shell Shocked. I
will be comparing the language it uses, ideas it contains and the way it is structured between both
poems, which Siegfried Sasson uses to demonstrate that war is evil, and should be stopped. The theme
in Died of Wounds is that soldiers become shell shocked and go insane. They also suffer from mental

On the forth line of Died of Wounds the author says He did the business well where business is a
metaphor, for it is the earnest of the wounded solider to draw attention to himself. Also on the last line
of Died of Wounds the author describes dead soldier as a slight wound where he is comparing a dead
solider to a small wound, and therefore it does not matter, and he is also comparing the country to a
solider, which is hardly notices a slight wound. There is also some similarity in Suicide in the
Trenches where Siegfried Sasson describes the trenches as if it is like hell meaning that war was like a
place where young people went and got themselves killed. On the first line of Died of Wounds,
Siegfried Sasson wrote Wet White , which is alliteration, which is a type of sound device. He also does
this on the third line, ninth line and the last line. This makes the poem sound better. There is also some
similarity in Suicide in the Trenches, where the author also uses this device to make the poem catchier
but instead uses different letters to make it sound different and better. There is also another similarity
in both poems where there are no assonances, which is the same as alliteration but it does not occur in

The Hamster Research Paper
The hamster, a well known pet by this day. But did it start out that way? No... no the hamster was rare
to most, almost unheard of. So, how exactly did this pet, the hamster, start out? How did it become so
popular? It was in 1946, that a man, named Albert Marsh, won a bet; as the winner of the bet, he
received a Siberian Hamster. Back then, this creature was strange, as it was not common nor really
heard of in America because the creature was native to Syria, and were only sent into America as
testing subjects. But after some thinking, Albert had an idea, or more like a belief: Hamsters didn t
belong in laboratories, but in the caring hands of children. Consequently, he got a few more of the
miniscule creatures (probably from a lab) and then started breeding them; apparently, as he later
learned, the hamsters are fast breeders! Soon enough, he had a small colony of them. Rather than
breeding an entire army to sell, he wanted to see if the hamsters would be a good seller, so he only
bred a handful at first. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The development of E Manufacturing can be divided into five major phases. First is the brand building
phase (1984 1991). By only focusing on refrigerators, the group had transformed its small factory into
the number one refrigerator brand in China. Second is diversification development phase (1991 1998).
In this phase, the group had successfully restructured from a single product company to a
manufacturer with multiple product lines including both white and brown goods. Moreover, E
Manufacturing had adopted consumer responsive innovation for particular customer needs.
Immediately followed by the third phase of global brand building (1998 2012) to deepen its market
penetration. Foreign sales channels were launched by the group for entering into international
mainstream markets where it aims to integrate global resources to build a local brand in each
geographic area worldwide. At the beginning of 2013, E Manufacturing being inspired by the latest
wave of Internet based companies is now undergoing the fifth phase networking strategy stage. The
reinvention of the group as an Internet based company in a way that few other companies have
attempted, let alone realized (Company s website). E Manufacturing s ambitious technological
internationalization strategy together with an intensive diversification and foreign market strategy
played an instrumental role in the progress to the leading position today. The company had exerted

Persuasive Techniques In Finding Nemo
In the adventurous and entertaining movie Finding Nemo, directed by Andrew Stanton and Lee
Unkrich, Marlin is a scared and untrusting fish who loses his wife and unborn kids to a barracuda
early in the movie. This makes him very cautious and fearful. In one of the earliest scenes of the story,
on Nemo s first day of school, Marlin shows his caution and fearful nature. He does it by making
Nemo check that the ocean is clear by making Nemo go in and out, saying We go out and back in. And
then we go out, and back in. And then one more time out and back in. And sometimes, if you wanna
do it four times (Stanton, Unkrich x:xx). This shows Marlin s caution and fear because he is going in
and out 3 times, and is okay with going out more! Now, something must have made him this way, and
we learned early in the movie that it was a barracuda killing his wife and kids. ... Show more content

We see another example of this when he learns that Nemo is going to the drop off, and rushes off to
stop him. Later on in the movie, when Marlin is following Dory to find Nemo, they have a chance
encounter with a shark. The shark, named Bruce, invites them to a party. Dory enthusiastically agrees,
while Marlin remains skeptic, urging Dory to caution and trying to avoid going, stating Parties are fun,
and it s tempting but (Stanton, Unkrich x:xx). While saying this, Marlin is backing away, trying to
avoid going to the sharks party . This shows caution, though this caution is for more obvious reasons,
that no fish should hang out with sharks, as they will be eaten. However, there is reason to believe that
Marlin is especially scared of predatory fish, as he lost his wife and 359 kids to one. This, added to
Marlins already fearful nature, made him more cautious than

Religious Beliefs in Aeschylus Oresteia, Homer s Iliad, and Sophocles Electra
The final and definitive defeat of the Persian army at the battle of Plataea represented the end of an
age long threat to Athens. But the victory was also a miracle, as all the odds were against the
Athenians at the onset of the war. While Pericles took charge of Athens after the war and started the
advance of democracy, religion also thrived. The rebuilding of the Acropolis and the construction of
the Parthenon and its great statue of Athene under Pericles rule signified the height of religious belief
among Athenians. However, the shift in power from the aristocrats to the common men in the new

Something close to a Homeric view can be drawn from this, with the difference being that Gods and
Goddesses always take the form of a mortal when interacting with other mortals in Homer s epic
poems, but the form that they appeared in was not addressed in The Eumenides.
In the very same scene, after Orestes, Hermes, and Apollo have exited, the ghost of Clytaemestra is
seen trying to awaken the sleeping Furies so they can continue their pursuit of Orestes. The
appearance of ghosts is nothing new, as it has been done before in Homer s poems. What this shows,
however, is that Aeschylus, likely a representative of Athenians during his time, had the same view
that Homer did. In their eyes, not only do Gods and Goddesses walk among men, but even ghosts,
something that should be considered on the opposite side of the spectrum, also appear in our world, as
real as any men can be.
The second scene of The Eumenides begins with Orestes arrival at the Acropolis, as he takes a
suppliant posture at the feet of the statue of Athene (Aeschylus, 143). Athene is said to have entered in
full armor (Aeschylus, 148), answering Orestes call for justice, just as the Furies have caught up with
him. What follows is a full blown trial similar to those of the present days. At one point, Athene re
enters [the scene], guiding twelve citizens chosen as jurors and attended by a herald (Aeschylus, 154).

Essay about Phobias Explained
Many people claim to be afraid of spiders, but probably not to the degree of 37 year old Mary Muffet
of Seattle. Mary went to many lengths to be spider free, including sealing her windows and doors with
duct tape, spraying her car with bug killer, and putting every single piece of washed and ironed
clothing into its own sealed plastic bag. She wasn t just afraid of spiders; she had arachnophobia, a
phobia, not to be confused with a simple fear. Phobias are not simple; they are complex in both their
origin and diagnosis, with many types that people suffer from and any number of treatments exist to
date.
What is a phobia?

What causes a phobia?
There is currently insufficient research in the field of phobias to determine a definite, clear cause.
What is known is that phobias are common in children and do not represent an abnormality. Phobias
can start in childhood or adulthood. Some people have suddenly become terrified of things they ve
been doing for years, somewhat like a flight attendant that suddenly begins to have panic attacks on
her 500th flight. In most cases, phobias are thought to branch from a confrontation with the feared
object or situation. Six of every ten persons who suffer phobias are able to remember when the fear
crisis occurred for the first time, i.e., when the sensation of panic became attached to the place or
situation where it first happened (Masci, 2002, p.2). Most phobias do not interfere with an individual s
normal functioning to the point of seeking treatment. There is usually no family history of mental
illness or of the same phobia. For example, a person with claustrophobia (fear of being in small
enclosed spaces such as an elevator) does not necessarily have a relative that is mentally ill or is also
claustrophobic. Most simple phobias develop in childhood and eventually go away. Ones that remain
rarely go away without treatment. There are theories that some phobias occur more naturally than
others. It is thought that they are somehow built into the brain. Many experiments with monkeys
display this particular theory. Shown videos of a

Looking for Answers in Looking for Richard
Al Pacino s Looking for Richard is an unusual film. It is a documentary about the complexities of
Shakespeare, the performing of the play Richard III, and the ignorance of the average American
regarding Shakespeare. The unusual nature of the film it s similar to a filmed Cliff notes version of the
text provokes wildly different reactions from film buffs, critics, and Shakespeare purists. A perusal of
five different reviews of the film show such variant descriptors that range from Mary Brennan s
comment that the documentary is decidedly narcissistic to Edwin Jahiel s comment that the film is an
original, mesmerizing exploration. The rather wide incongruity between the reviews ... Show more

Part of the issue when perusing these reviews is to determine what the critic perceived the purpose of
Pacino s film to be. Brennan s hypothesis is that Pacino s primary objective is to find meaning in
Richard III, and the secondary objectives include creating an accessible version of the play the Mr. Joe
Average can understand, while portraying the acting process when faced with such a formidable text.
How a critic views the goals of the film directly relates to how well he or she believes Pacino achieved
these goals, so it is important to discuss them.
Dre, a Girls on Film critic, offers another similar conjecture as to what Pacino s goals for the film
were. According to the first name only Dre, the purpose of the film was to present a tribute to
Shakespeare, to explore the acting process, and to explain and portray a version of Richard III. Giving
the film the page s highest rating, it is obvious that Dre feels the film delivers on its goals.
In fact, much of Dre s words match quite closely with the reasons Pacino stated onscreen for making
the film to present Shakespeare in a more contemporary form for the average American. The popular
Girls on Film web page lives up to its name it presents twenty something young women (not
necessarily with film history degrees) discussing movies. The bright pink colors and Clearasil ads on

Organized Religion: an Impediment to Human Fulfillment In Catholicism, religious beliefs are
determined by the sacred scripture and tradition. These beliefs offer a comprehensive and definitive
explanation of the nature of God. James Joyce s Portrait of An Artist as a Young Man is a narration of
the transition from childhood to adulthood of the protagonist, Stephen Dedalus, who grows up in a
Catholic society and family life in Ireland. Because of the nature of his church s role in his life,
Stephen faces internal conflict regarding his own thoughts and beliefs about the nature of God. After
many trials and tribulations with his faith life, Stephen realizes that the church s unequivocal teachings
and beliefs actually hinder his ability to find answers to metaphysical questions that arise in his life.
Stephen s religious struggles display how organized religion impedes an individual s ability to find
one s own identity and purpose, subsequently contradicting God s purpose for humanity. In his early
childhood, Stephen proactively seeks out his own meaning and identity; however, as he gets older and
is exposed to organized religion, his ability to consider his own true meaning is hindered. Before
being engulfed by the pressures of religious life, Stephen lives with a youthful optimism and curiosity.
He actively tries to find out what the purpose of his life will be. This is evident when he sits

Medicine Is Not Just Been My Career Choice
Half awake, I could still hear the loud agonizing cries. I grabbed my mini stethoscope and hurried
downstairs to observe an impressive array of tasks to save lives. Though, I was a child, it was not the
first time I had seen a critical patient with a busy medical crew around. I grew up in a hospital where
both my parents worked full time. Gradually I started imbibing the quintessential values of a medical
career to the point when helping others was no longer an act, but a way of living life. This is why I
believe, medicine has not just been my career choice but a personal journey of self discovery and
human revelation.
In 2004, I donated all my savings to the Tsunami relief fund, which sowed the seeds for the growth of
the person I had chosen to become. Since then, years of experience as a president and a member of
various Non governmental organizations (NGO) including the American Red Cross Society has
inculcated in me the compassion and leadership qualities.
During my medical school, attending several enlightening workshops on Art of living and meditation,
assimilated in me higher moral values and an inner code of conduct. While, the hardships of staying
away from home at a boarding school with acute shortage of basic amenities were testing me, I
maintained a rank in top few students throughout my medical school. Teaching health issues and

Franz Kafka as a Hunger Artist
Through much of Franz Kafka s writing, the reader can see how his personal experiences and
viewpoints are clearly worked into his many stories. One of which stands out is his story A Hunger
Artist. In this story Kafka speaks through the hunger artist of the alienation and isolation he feels in
his own body, as well as the emptiness he feels as a result of the disconnected relationship he and his
father share. Ironically this emptiness manifests itself quite literally at the end of Kafka s life, when he
dies as a result of tuberculosis of the larynx, which causes him to literally starve to death, just as the
hunger artist in the story. It was said about his writing the early manifestations of authentic originality
were nurtured in solitary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Like the hunger artist, he too lived in a state of constant want for both food and recognition, as he
longed for his father s acceptance. From the very beginning of Kaka s life, his family had been
organized by, around, and for the benefit of his overbearing father. As a result of his father s constant
criticisms, Kafka began to criticize himself, as he felt crushed by his ever present burden of guilt,
which he turned into self hatred. One of the most significant influences on Kafka s life and work was
his domineering father. Kafka s stories often contain themes drawn from the burden of his father s
tyranny in his home life, depicting settings of confinement as well as convoluted systems of
punishment and other expressions of seemingly all powerful authority. (Miline 100) He blames his
father for having robbed him of his childhood, never giving him the attention he is starving for, and
like the hunger artist, he spends his whole life seeking it. The most sustained account of Kafka s
childhood is seen by Kafka himself, contained in the fifty page

The Half Truth Of First Mover Advantage
The Half Truth of First Mover Advantage
The first mover advantage is defined as a firm s ability to be better off than its competitors as a result
of being the first to market in a new product category. This concept is accepted without questioning or
objecting it, a great amount of mangers believe that be incorporating this status will increase their
competitive advantage and obtaining a great part of the market share. There are executives that believe
that the first mover is a great advantage that will make their business succeed in every industry that
they enter, the case is that there are many scientific refutals of this method because not every firm has
the same sources as others, and the market and technology change differently, plus we must include
other different factors. The research in this article found situations in which companies are successful
with the first mover method, but also found situations where firms need different sources and
sometimes are unsuccessful. In the article, we found two factors that influence greatly the first mover
s success, this factors are:
The pace at which the technology of the product is evolving
The pace at which the market for the product is expanding
By, knowing this factors we can create a strategy in competing in the market depending on these
factors, after doing this we could distinguish between the long term advantage which can increase a
companies profits and grab a greater market share than competitors, or a

Repressing Words In Maya Angelou s Graduation Day
You can not do it. You are not good enough. How often have these words torn down a person s self
esteem and confidence. How often have these words stood in the way of a person s success, paralyzing
that person in fear or disappointment. Maya Angelou knew this feeling well in her story, Graduation
Day. The excitement and pride of graduating is taken away by one man s words. These words lead the
audience to believe that they are worthless. However, repressive words only possess power when
allowed.
It is unquestioned that repressing words affect how a person views him or herself. Words can go as far
as to change the whole tone of a day. Angelou recounts the day with vivid details of laughter, pride,
and joy. However, these feelings are replaced within moments, when one man s speech reminds the
people of their oppression. Repressing words take control when the subject of attack forgets his or her
worth. This stance is proven on page 186 of Graduation Day. Angelou states, The man s dead words
fell like bricks around the auditorium... the proud graduating class of 1940 had dropped their heads.
Donleavy had exposed us. The entire auditorium allowed themselves to be subjected to the beliefs of
one man, allowing themselves to reform to what the speaker was claiming. Often words such as these
leave a person feeling defenseless. It was brutal to be young and already trained to sit quietly and
listen to charges brought against my color with no chance at defense. Colored people trained at a
young age, believed that their race stood no chance at equality. While repressive words have power,
that power is dependent upon the individual.
It does not have to stay that way. When faced with repression, an individual has two choices. It is
typical for a person to allow those words to become their reality. Angelou began to define her race as
worthless. She conformed to the ideas of others, stirring up feelings of hatred. She goes as far to say,
We were an abomination. All of us (Angelou, 2014, p.186 ). The power of repression is once again
evident. While not as popular, there is a second choice. This choice is demonstrated when a person
does not allow words of repression to define their worth. This choice

Relationship Between The English And The Native Americans

relationship between the English and the Native Americans in 1600 to 1700 is one of the most
fluctuating and the most profound relationships in American history. On the one side of the picture,
the harmony between Wampanoag and Puritans even inspires them to celebrate first Thanksgiving ;
while, by contrast, the conflicts between the Pequots and the English urge them to antagonize each
other, and even wage a war. In addition, the mystery of why the European settlers, including English,
become the dominant power in American world, instead of the indigenous people, or Indians, can be
solved from the examination of the relationship. In a variety of ways, the relationship drastically alters
how people think about and relate to the aborigines. Politically, the relationship changes to establish
the supremacy of the English; the English intends to obtain the land and rules over it. Socially, the
relationship changes to present the majority of the English settlers; the dominating population is
mostly the English settlers. Economically, the relationship changes to obtain the benefit of the English
settlers; they gain profit from the massive resource in America. Therefore, the relationship does, in
fact, change to foreshadow the discordance of the two groups of people. Firstly, the relationship

Essay on Jazz
Early Jazz
The earliest easily available jazz recordings are from the 1920 s and early 1930 s. Trumpet player and
vocalist Louis Armstrong ( quot;Pops quot;, quot;Satchmo quot;) was by far the most important figure
of this period. He played with groups called the Hot Five and the Hot Seven; any recordings you can
find of these groups are recommended. The style of these groups, and many others of the period, is
often referred to as New Orleans jazz or Dixieland. It is characterized by collective improvisation, in
which all performers simultaneously play improvised melodic lines within the harmonic structure of
the tune. Louis, as a singer, is credited with the invention of scat, in which the vocalist makes up

There were also some important small group swing recordings during the 1930 s and 1940 s. These
differed from earlier small groups in that these featured very little collective improvisation. This music
emphasized the individual soloist. Goodman, Ellington, and Basie recorded often in these small group
settings. Major saxophonists of the era include Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Lester Young,
Coleman Hawkins, and Ben Webster. Trumpet players include Roy Eldridge, Harry quot;Sweets quot;
Edison, Cootie Williams, and Charlie Shavers. Pianists include Ellington, Basie, Teddy Wilson, Erroll
Garner, and Oscar Peterson; guitarists include Charlie Christian, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessell, and
Django Reinhardt; vibraphonists include Lionel Hampton; bassists include Jimmy Blanton, Walter
Page, and Slam Stewart; drummers include Jo Jones and Sam Woodyard. Billie Holiday, Dinah
Washington, and Ella Fitzgerald were important singers in this era. Most of these musicians recorded
in small groups as well as with big bands. The styles of these musicians can best be summarized by
saying they concentrated primarily on playing melodically, on the swing feel, and on the development
of an individual sound. The blues was, as in many other styles, an important element of this music.

The birth of bebop in the 1940 s is often considered to mark the beginning of modern jazz. This style

Emily Bronte s dramatic novel, Wuthering Heights, is a compelling look into the human nature of the
individual persona. Most of the novel could be used as an analysis of contrasts, the traits and
personalities that form in the environment of little rules found crafted in the novel are each as unique
as they are distinctive in how they represent themselves. Using the juxtaposition inherent in characters
personalities, such as Heathcliff and Edgar, and the differences presented by settings of both
Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, Bronte submits us to the extreme conflicts and emotions
that brood and grow with such polar characters. It s in the polarity itself that the novel finds its power,
using opposites of setting, personality, and traditional conventions Emily Bronte argues that humans

Simon Says Research Paper
Simon Says is a game that helps in the development of a child s performance skills during middle
childhood. It is a great way to help them exercise their listening skills and self control. The game helps
to develop the child s motor, processing, and social skills. In this paper, I will discuss how to play
Simon Says and briefly discuss how the game helps contribute to a child s performance skills motor,
processing, and social. Simon Says is played with three or more players. To play, one person takes the
role of Simon and starts off by saying, Simon says, [insert action command here] . Everyone must
then perform the action Simon says to do. If Simon makes an action command without saying, Simon
says first, anyone who performs that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, if Simon says to stand on one foot, it helps the child stabilize. If Simon says to lift one
arm up, it helps them practice their reach. If Simon says to touch your toes, the child bends down.
Many different motor skills can be exercised during this game, it all depends on what Simon says to
do. Simon Says is also helps children to exercise their processing skills. In playing the game, it helps
the child to practice either giving or following directions. Sequencing is practiced as Simon says to
jump first, and then pat your head. The child notices and responds to Simon s action requests and
other friends playing the game, which in turn teaches them self control. They learn to be patient,
listen, and follow directions. Lastly, Simon Says helps the child exercise their social skills. In order to
participate in the game, they must approach others and interact with them. This helps them express
emotion and gesticulate during the game from the excitement of who performs an action correctly, and
who does not. They respond to Simon s requests by carefully listening to Simon and acknowledging
what he says to do, which in turn teaches the child to listen and follow directions. They learn to take
turns being Simon which contributes to learning how to

Sociology Of Adoption
Adamec, C., Miller, L. (2007) The encyclopedia of adoption third edition. New York, NY: Infobase

The source addresses many issue and aspects of the adoption triad and process in an alphabetical order
of the issue being discussed. The sections under the adult adopted persons and search are of particular
importance. The adult adopted person section discusses the psychological adjustment for an adoptee
once they reach adulthood. It concludes that, depending on the age of adoption, will determine the
effects on the adoptee. Of those that were adopted at birth, women suffered from less effects of the
adoption than men. In contrast, those adopted a later age, suffered from more effects, but those effects

(2014). Adopted children and stepchildren: 2010. Washington, DC: U.S. Department of Commerce.
This report details the 2010 census, which was the first to determine the relationship of the children
that reside in a household. The report shows a table that separates children by adopted children,
stepchildren, and biological children and then by the age groups of under six, six to eleven, twelve to
seventeen, and eighteen and under. It shows that, with the exception of biological children, most age
groups are at a fairly even percentage between adopted, step children living in any given household.
I intend to use this table to show that adopted children are represented at the same level as any other
child in the United States and deserve the same rights as a non adopted child. Keeping the adoptees
records sealed from them does affect a large percentage of children and denying them the information
that they should be entitled to as an adult for any reason they chose to want their information, whether
it be medical or just curiosity.

The Cuban Missile Crisis Essay
In 1962 nuclear war seemed inevitable to the world, it was the first time nuclear war was hanging on a
thread. The Cuban Missile Crisis presented a threat to the world, in which the USSR planted nuclear
missiles on Cuba. America s response was to threaten launching nuclear missiles at the Russians. This
incident launched the world into a new time, which presented nuclear weapons as a source of power.
The incident of the Cuban Missile Crisis still connects with us today because the power nuclear

The reason this stance can and is sometimes taken is because the entire crisis began with nuclear
weapons and nearly ended everything with them as well. America placed Jupiter Missiles with nuclear
capabilities in Turkey and Italy, as part of NATO s cold war deterrent against the soviets. This is what
many people say started the tensions, we placed Nukes at their doorstep, thusly Nikita Khrushchev,
the Soviet Premier feared the imbalance of power would prompt America to strike first. While this
psychological fear of Khrushchevs is a piece to the puzzle, many other things factor into the eventual
crisis. The economic dealings between the Soviets and Cuba, already gave Khrushchev a footing near
America in which he could fix the imbalance of power. But the only reason the USSR and Cuba began
dealing with each other is because America cut off 80% of its exports, creating economic tensions in
Cuba. While those are 2 places people point the blame for the start of the crisis, a final nail in the
coffin could also be blamed. The political ideology John F. Kennedy which feared the spreading of
nuclear technology to new nations; he did claim that the U.S. lagged behind the Soviets in nuclear
capabilities during his campaign. JFK knew as well as Khrushchev did that this was false, but the
general thought could only procure more reason for Khrushchev to plant missiles near America. If
America believed they lagged behind

Familial Adenomatous Polyposis
Throughout the years, geneticists have made ground breaking discoveries, in regards to thousands of
inherited diseases. They have identified numerous mutations within the human genome that have
given rise to treatments and cures for multiple genetic diseases, one of which is Familial Adenomatous
Polyposis, also known as FAP. According to Half, Brocovich, and Rozen (2009)1, Familial
Adenomatous Polyposis is characterized by the development of many tens of thousands adenomas in
the rectum and colon during the second decade of life. Familial Adenomatous Polyposis is inherited as
an autosomal dominant disease, which is the reason why there is a relatively equal occurrence rate in

Severe Familial Adenomatous Polyposis or Classical FAP is characterized by the formation of over
100 adenomas in the rectum and colon. (Ellis, 2008). Individuals with this form of the genetic disease
will experience an earlier occurrence of tumors. According to Ellis (2008), adenomatous polyps are
present in 15% of FAP individuals by the age of 10 years old, 50% by the age of 15 years old, and
75% by the age of 20 years old. Individuals who are aware of their APC gene mutation, should begin
colonoscopy screenings as early as possible, preferably beginning at age 15. Since this disease is
autosomal dominant, individuals who have a family history of FAP would need get tested for the APC
mutation through blood samples, and then would proceed with colonoscopy screenings. Unfortunately,
individuals with the severe or classical type of Familial Adenomatous Polyposis will almost 100%
develop colorectal malignancy if left untreated by the age of 39. (Ellis, 2008). Ellis (2008) also
presented that 7% of individuals would develop colorectal cancer by the age of 21. Individuals who
experience severe FAP are at an increased risk of developing extra colonic attributes such as, retinal
hyperpigmentation, desmoid tumors, and even thyroid tumors. Retinal Hyperpigmentation or CHRPE
(congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium) has be found to be associated

Apollo And Dafne Essay
Apollo and Dafne is a life sized hand carved marble sculpture created by Gian Lorenzo Bernini
between 1622 and 1625. It represents Apollo (God of Light and Poetry) and a river nymph named
Daphne. It is kept at the Galleria Borghese, Rome (Italy).
This sculpture is inspired by a tale from book I of Ovid s Metamorphosis. Daphne was Apollo s first
love. It was no accident, but by the evil intentions of Cupid. Apollo saw cupid with a bow and arrows
and made fun of him feeling confident after defeating a python. Cupid is upset with getting teased.
Cupid fires two different arrows. One arrow is tipped with gold and makes people fall in love. The
other lead arrow does the opposite. Apollo is struck with the golden arrow of love and Daphne gets
shot with the lead tipped arrow. Apollo immediately falls in love with Daphne, but she finds the idea
of loving anybody unpleasant. Daphne tells her father; Peneus she wants to remain a virgin. He tells
her that she owes him grandchildren. Peneus agreed to his daughter s request, saying she will not have
to get married. Apollo is head over heels in love with Daphne and pursues her in the woods. He is
attempting to convince her of how wonderful he is but Daphne wants nothing to do with Apollo.
Eventually, Apollo catches up with the beautiful nymph in the woods. Daphne calls out to her father to
help. Peneus turns her into a tree. Daphne is encased in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

  • 2. Ryan Bailey Patterson s Resistance And Resilience In Ryan bailey Patterson s article, Resistance and Resilience Patterson discusses the impact that politicalized art can have on a movement. Patterson articulates her argument by first giving historical context to the violent phenomena and then explaining the impact that politicalized art had on the anti feminicide movement in Cuidad Juarez as the art functioned as a communicator between the women of Cuidad Juarez and the outside world. The art not only communicated the problem in the city but helped give context to the problem and excited enough emotion in the outside party to transform the grassroots movement into a transnational movement. Through a wide range of evidence, Patterson supports the idea that politicalized art is an effective way to create social awareness of a social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Patterson in his article , Resistance and Resilience uses a wide range of evidence as she describes the origins of the anti feminicide movement. Patterson in her article gives historical context of the conditions of women in the Cuidad Jaurez and talks about the effects of the Maquiladora Program which replaced the Bracero program in 1965. Patterson claims that , Cuidad Juarez became a hunting ground for innocent female victims with the establishment of the Maquiladora Program. Patterson backs this claim by providing evidence of how the program led to a job crisis which led to the creation of the National boarder Development Program which allowed foreign corporations to outsource their production to mexico where the labor was cheaper and the finished exports had little to no tariffs. This program forced to women to look for any available jobs. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Memo of Dollar General Relevant Economic Trends With the exception of supercenters such as Costco and BJ s, the fastest growing portion of the overall retail industry in the United States during the past decade has been in the dollar store segment. From 2000 2005 dollar stores had a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.2% which was nearly double the 5.6% CAGR in the retail industry as a whole. Sales from these discount stores were $24.7 billion in 2000 and were expected to more than double to $51.1 billion in 2009 (Exhibit 8). Two main drivers fueled this growth trend. The first was a cultural shift in consumers towards a bargain based mentality. This was spurred by an increased presence of retailers with a low cost strategy including Wal Mart, ... They emphasize the use of even dollar prices on most items to conveniently make it easy for customers to track how much they are spending before they get to the checkout line. This coupled with their focused assortment of quality goods allows easy in and out shopping and saves the customer time. DG competes against big box retailers such as Wal Mart through price and convenience rather than price and selection. The average DG store is 6,900 square feet with about 4,900 stock keeping units (SKUs) serving customers who live within five miles of the store. The average Wal Mart on the other hand is over 100,000 square feet containing more than 75,000 SKUs and serves many customers living more than five miles away. Strategically limiting the number of brands and sizes as well as purchasing fast turning SKUs gives DG the leverage to negotiate low purchase prices when bargaining with suppliers based on the higher volume of individual SKUs being purchased. This allows them to offer competitive prices while achieving price parity with big box retailers selling the same items and on occasion even beating these competitor s prices. Focusing on both price and convenience also allows DG to compete and differentiate themselves from other small convenience, discount, and drugstore retailers who typically focus on either price or convenience but ... • 4. Critical Analysis Of Sustainability Principles Essay Critical Analysis of Sustainability Principles submitted by: Tanvi Rawat Student ID: S3523444 Q.2 what is the relationship between sustainability and anthropogenic climate change, and how can an understanding of these linkages be used to guide policy from the global to the local scale? Ans. Sustainability is promoting social, economic growth with preserving the environment, whereas the Anthropogenic Climate change is influencing natural and human living conditions. With an increase in the risk of disaster which is turning to be a constrain in development and growth. The anthropogenic generation of greenhouse gases (GHGS) is continuously making the temperature rise. The energy use for industrial production and goods, services since last 200 years changed the atmospheric conditions. The contents of greenhouse gases like CO2 (carbon dioxide), N2, O (nitrous oxide), O3 (tropospheric ozone), CH4 (methane) (Trenberth, 1992), which is the main cause of natural disaster like draught and flood which ultimately becomes a cause of economic loss. • 5. The Pros And Cons Of The Columbian Exchange The trade of biological and cultural aspects defines The Columbian Exchange, also called the Great Biological Exchange, for the first time Europeans decided to connect with the Western Hemisphere. This was important because the Europeans actually gained more by taking advantage of the Indians; animals, plants, and diseases, these transactions marked a whole new beginning in the history of America. Two isolated parties explored their differences, and by that, they enriched their biological and cultural lives. (Shi and Tindall 336 37). The beginning of the exchange happens, the plants and foods. The diets of the two cultures happened to be different, and so they altered them. The Western Hemisphere had many new different options for the Europeans to choose from. There were three new foods that the Europeans did not recognize, but took advantage; corn, which was called maize, it basically grew everywhere, sweet and white potatoes, and many different kinds of beans that the Europeans loved. (Shi and Tindall 37). Some other examples of the food the Indians shared with the Europeans are peanuts, peppers, tomatoes, pumpkins, pineapples, avocados, cacao, chewing gum, and the list goes on. The Europeans, on the other hand, presented to the indigenous people, the greatest foods that still go on to this day, which are, rice, wheat, barley, wine grapes, melons, coffee, olives, bananas, daisies, and many more. The transactions of these foods were so important to both cultures because when they combined them, they were amazingly rich in taste. Europeans did not have pepper, but when adding it to the food it became something so delicious it could not be real. Also, they did not know that in the future young people would conquer the New World with the positive effect that corn left them (Shi and Tindall 37). Both of these groups basically repaired their culture for good. On the other hand, the Europeans never in their life saw iguanas, armadillos, anacondas in real life, nor the Indians knew what horses, pigs, and chickens were; of course, after the exchange, the Americas were full of these interesting animals from the European culture (Shi and Tindall 37). • 7. How Is King Arthur Real Throughout the centuries King Arthur s story has continued to develop through speculation, conjecture, and evidence; however, much of this has long been contested. Few people argue he exists for lack of evidence and an abundance of mystery. The majority of Arthurian enthusiasts believe he never existed or was a character created by combining the best traits of heroes at the time. Some just do not care, these people get from Arthur inspiration and courage, whether he was real or not. In most cases King Arthur being real would just be icing on the cake. There s little hard evidence on who Arthur could have been based off of: for the most part it is speculation. The Real King Arthur is an article on a website called lordsandladies.org that is strictly used for educational purposes. Maximus was a Celt and general who became the nephew of the Welsh King Coel Godhebog through marriage. Maximus s base was Carmarthen or Caernarvon. Another article from The History Files confirms that King Godhebog was indeed Maximus s uncle through marriage. • 8. Examples Of Inventions During The European Industrial... Inventions during the European Industrial Revolution There are many inventions during the European Industrial Revolution that impacts society for Europeans. There are inventions that made other inventions better and also inventions that revolutionized inventions that we already possessed. A man named James Kay in 1733 invented one of the inventions called the Flying Shuttle. He built it, supposedly, with nothing more that a pocketknife and his tool. The flying shuttle improved on the old hand loom. A worker pulled a cord rope back and forth to send a small piece of canoe shaped wood, or shuttle, flying across a wood frame through threads to weave cloth. The flying shuttle was a small improvement and was still powered by man other than coal, wind, water. Nonetheless it began the crucial process by which unskilled workers could produce more cloth with machines that skilled workers could produce by hand. This invention in my opinion made a big impact to the European Industrial Revolution. I think just about all of these inventions are very good for society, and changed the world as we know it today. The Steam Engine was the energy behind the most advanced textile inventions, such as the spinning mule and the power loom. It symbolized the transition from human power in homes to machine power in factories. The steam engine was originally invented in England to pull water out of coal mines. For thousands of years, wood from local forests had been the main fuel in England, as well as the main material for shipbuilding and housing construction. By the end of the seventeenth century few forests remained. By the early seventeen hundreds, the easy to open coal pits were gone, and mine shafts as deep as two hundred feet were dug to find it. • 9. Traditional Methods Of Genetic Improvement 1. Literature review 1 . 1. Traditional methods of genetic improvement Farmers have been making mate selection decisions for the improvement of livestock for generations. Whilst progress was evident, it was slow until the mid 20th century, when substantial gains in genetic improvement in both livestock and crops was observed. A good example of this progress is the increase in milk yield of US Holstein cattle which doubled from 6000kg per lactation in the 1960s to 1200kg per lactation in 2000. Up to 50% of this improvement has been accredited to genetic improvement (Dekkers and Hospital, 2002). These gains were brought about using quantitative techniques to estimate the genetic and environmental components of traits, as well as an improved ability to disseminate genetic material, such as cryopreservation of semen/embryos and artificial insemination. Whilst the genetic architecture of a trait is presumed to be complex, it is not known (Hill, 2010). Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP)methodology utilises a linear mixed model to combine phenotypic and pedigree information to calculate an individual s estimated breeding value (EBVs), which is used as a measure of an organism s additive genetic worth (Henderson, 1975). This technique was quickly adopted as the standard method to calculate EBVs. Despite this success, BLUP does have disadvantages. Without phenotypic information about an individual or it s close relatives it is not capable of calculating EBVs. Genomic ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The two forms of incontinence the patient would suffer from are transient and functional. The patient is currently taking Lasix 80 mg by mouth every 12 hours and would this would be the contributable factor for transient incontinence. Functional incontinence in this case would be from the patient being unable to make it to the toilet because he needs two people to assist him when moving. If the patient was not taking the Lasix, he would still most likely suffer from functional incontinence. The patient has also had an intraoperative left cerebrovascular accident (CVA) which can also be a factor for incontinence but there is not enough information given to make that determination. Although, a CVA can be a factor for incontinence it is not always the cause. The Lasix 80 mg twice a day combined with the patient not being able to go to the toilet on his own would lead to a diagnosis of mixed incontinence (Ebersole Hess , 2014). ... Should 16 Year Olds Be Allowed To Vote Essay According to Franklin D Roosevelt, Nobody will ever deprive the American people of the right to vote except the American people themselves and the only way they could do this is by not voting . (Brainyquote). The right to vote allows the people to have a say and a voice on society and the people who run it. However, many say young Americans do not understand or care about politics and should not have an opinion on who runs the country. Lowering the voting age to 16 in the United States will help today s youth; 16 year olds are old enough to make educated decisions and have a strong voice on this nation s current issues. So, how exactly did this pet, the hamster, start out? How did it become so popular? It was in 1946, that a man, named Albert Marsh, won a bet; as the winner of the bet, he received a Siberian Hamster. Back then, this creature was strange, as it was not common nor really heard of in America because the creature was native to Syria, and were only sent into America as testing subjects. But after some thinking, Albert had an idea, or more like a belief: Hamsters didn t belong in laboratories, but in the caring hands of children. Consequently, he got a few more of the miniscule creatures (probably from a lab) and then started breeding them; apparently, as he later learned, the hamsters are fast breeders! Soon enough, he had a small colony of them. Rather than breeding an entire army to sell, he wanted to see if the hamsters would be a good seller, so he only bred a handful at first. ... This makes him very cautious and fearful. In one of the earliest scenes of the story, on Nemo s first day of school, Marlin shows his caution and fearful nature. He does it by making Nemo check that the ocean is clear by making Nemo go in and out, saying We go out and back in. And then we go out, and back in. And then one more time out and back in. And sometimes, if you wanna do it four times (Stanton, Unkrich x:xx). This shows Marlin s caution and fear because he is going in and out 3 times, and is okay with going out more! But the victory was also a miracle, as all the odds were against the Athenians at the onset of the war. While Pericles took charge of Athens after the war and started the advance of democracy, religion also thrived. Something close to a Homeric view can be drawn from this, with the difference being that Gods and Goddesses always take the form of a mortal when interacting with other mortals in Homer s epic poems, but the form that they appeared in was not addressed in The Eumenides. In the very same scene, after Orestes, Hermes, and Apollo have exited, the ghost of Clytaemestra is seen trying to awaken the sleeping Furies so they can continue their pursuit of Orestes. The appearance of ghosts is nothing new, as it has been done before in Homer s poems. What this shows, however, is that Aeschylus, likely a representative of Athenians during his time, had the same view that Homer did. In their eyes, not only do Gods and Goddesses walk among men, but even ghosts, something that should be considered on the opposite side of the spectrum, also appear in our world, as real as any men can be. The second scene of The Eumenides begins with Orestes arrival at the Acropolis, as he takes a suppliant posture at the feet of the statue of Athene (Aeschylus, 143). There is currently insufficient research in the field of phobias to determine a definite, clear cause. What is known is that phobias are common in children and do not represent an abnormality. Phobias can start in childhood or adulthood. Some people have suddenly become terrified of things they ve been doing for years, somewhat like a flight attendant that suddenly begins to have panic attacks on her 500th flight. In most cases, phobias are thought to branch from a confrontation with the feared object or situation. Six of every ten persons who suffer phobias are able to remember when the fear crisis occurred for the first time, i.e., when the sensation of panic became attached to the place or situation where it first happened (Masci, 2002, p.2). Most phobias do not interfere with an individual s normal functioning to the point of seeking treatment. There is usually no family history of mental illness or of the same phobia. For example, a person with claustrophobia (fear of being in small enclosed spaces such as an elevator) does not necessarily have a relative that is mentally ill or is also claustrophobic. Most simple phobias develop in childhood and eventually go away. Ones that remain rarely go away without treatment. There are theories that some phobias occur more naturally than others. It is thought that they are somehow built into the brain. Many experiments with monkeys display this particular theory. Shown videos of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How a critic views the goals of the film directly relates to how well he or she believes Pacino achieved these goals, so it is important to discuss them. Dre, a Girls on Film critic, offers another similar conjecture as to what Pacino s goals for the film were. According to the first name only Dre, the purpose of the film was to present a tribute to Shakespeare, to explore the acting process, and to explain and portray a version of Richard III. These beliefs offer a comprehensive and definitive explanation of the nature of God. James Joyce s Portrait of An Artist as a Young Man is a narration of the transition from childhood to adulthood of the protagonist, Stephen Dedalus, who grows up in a Catholic society and family life in Ireland. Because of the nature of his church s role in his life, Stephen faces internal conflict regarding his own thoughts and beliefs about the nature of God. After many trials and tribulations with his faith life, Stephen realizes that the church s unequivocal teachings and beliefs actually hinder his ability to find answers to metaphysical questions that arise in his life. Stephen s religious struggles display how organized religion impedes an individual s ability to find one s own identity and purpose, subsequently contradicting God s purpose for humanity. In his early childhood, Stephen proactively seeks out his own meaning and identity; however, as he gets older and is exposed to organized religion, his ability to consider his own true meaning is hindered. • 32. Repressing Words In Maya Angelou s Graduation Day You can not do it. You are not good enough. How often have these words torn down a person s self esteem and confidence. How often have these words stood in the way of a person s success, paralyzing that person in fear or disappointment. Maya Angelou knew this feeling well in her story, Graduation Day. The excitement and pride of graduating is taken away by one man s words. These words lead the audience to believe that they are worthless. However, repressive words only possess power when allowed. It is unquestioned that repressing words affect how a person views him or herself. Words can go as far as to change the whole tone of a day. Angelou recounts the day with vivid details of laughter, pride, and joy. However, these feelings are replaced within moments, when one man s speech reminds the people of their oppression. Repressing words take control when the subject of attack forgets his or her worth. This stance is proven on page 186 of Graduation Day. Angelou states, The man s dead words fell like bricks around the auditorium... the proud graduating class of 1940 had dropped their heads. Donleavy had exposed us. The entire auditorium allowed themselves to be subjected to the beliefs of one man, allowing themselves to reform to what the speaker was claiming. Often words such as these leave a person feeling defenseless. It was brutal to be young and already trained to sit quietly and listen to charges brought against my color with no chance at defense. Colored people trained at a young age, believed that their race stood no chance at equality. While repressive words have power, that power is dependent upon the individual. It does not have to stay that way. When faced with repression, an individual has two choices. It is typical for a person to allow those words to become their reality. Angelou began to define her race as worthless. She conformed to the ideas of others, stirring up feelings of hatred. She goes as far to say, We were an abomination. All of us (Angelou, 2014, p.186 ). The power of repression is once again evident. While not as popular, there is a second choice. This choice is demonstrated when a person does not allow words of repression to define their worth. Relationship Between The English And The Native Americans Shayne Chen Mrs. Allen OCO AP US History 27 August 2015 The War of the Change The relationship between the English and the Native Americans in 1600 to 1700 is one of the most fluctuating and the most profound relationships in American history. On the one side of the picture, the harmony between Wampanoag and Puritans even inspires them to celebrate first Thanksgiving ; while, by contrast, the conflicts between the Pequots and the English urge them to antagonize each other, and even wage a war. In addition, the mystery of why the European settlers, including English, become the dominant power in American world, instead of the indigenous people, or Indians, can be solved from the examination of the relationship. In a variety of ways, the relationship drastically alters how people think about and relate to the aborigines. Politically, the relationship changes to establish the supremacy of the English; the English intends to obtain the land and rules over it. Socially, the relationship changes to present the majority of the English settlers; the dominating population is mostly the English settlers. Economically, the relationship changes to obtain the benefit of the English settlers; they gain profit from the massive resource in America. Therefore, the relationship does, in fact, change to foreshadow the discordance of the two groups of people. Firstly, the relationship changes in the politics in many ways. To begin with, the European settlers, the English, crave so much land ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Essay on Jazz Early Jazz The earliest easily available jazz recordings are from the 1920 s and early 1930 s. Trumpet player and vocalist Louis Armstrong ( quot;Pops quot;, quot;Satchmo quot;) was by far the most important figure of this period. He played with groups called the Hot Five and the Hot Seven; any recordings you can find of these groups are recommended. The style of these groups, and many others of the period, is often referred to as New Orleans jazz or Dixieland. It is characterized by collective improvisation, in which all performers simultaneously play improvised melodic lines within the harmonic structure of the tune. Louis, as a singer, is credited with the invention of scat, in which the vocalist makes up nonsense syllables to sing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were also some important small group swing recordings during the 1930 s and 1940 s. These differed from earlier small groups in that these featured very little collective improvisation. This music emphasized the individual soloist. Goodman, Ellington, and Basie recorded often in these small group settings. Major saxophonists of the era include Johnny Hodges, Paul Gonsalves, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Ben Webster. Trumpet players include Roy Eldridge, Harry quot;Sweets quot; Edison, Cootie Williams, and Charlie Shavers. Pianists include Ellington, Basie, Teddy Wilson, Erroll Garner, and Oscar Peterson; guitarists include Charlie Christian, Herb Ellis, Barney Kessell, and Django Reinhardt; vibraphonists include Lionel Hampton; bassists include Jimmy Blanton, Walter Page, and Slam Stewart; drummers include Jo Jones and Sam Woodyard. Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, and Ella Fitzgerald were important singers in this era. Most of these musicians recorded in small groups as well as with big bands. The styles of these musicians can best be summarized by saying they concentrated primarily on playing melodically, on the swing feel, and on the development of an individual sound. The blues was, as in many other styles, an important element of this music. Bebop The birth of bebop in the 1940 s is often considered to mark the beginning of modern jazz. • 38. Wuthering Heights Juxtaposition Emily Bronte s dramatic novel, Wuthering Heights, is a compelling look into the human nature of the individual persona. Most of the novel could be used as an analysis of contrasts, the traits and personalities that form in the environment of little rules found crafted in the novel are each as unique as they are distinctive in how they represent themselves. Using the juxtaposition inherent in characters personalities, such as Heathcliff and Edgar, and the differences presented by settings of both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange, Bronte submits us to the extreme conflicts and emotions that brood and grow with such polar characters. It s in the polarity itself that the novel finds its power, using opposites of setting, personality, and traditional conventions Emily Bronte argues that humans are inherently selfish, only thinking of themselves before others and as such can only operate in a ... This made him hardened, perhaps, to ill treatment: he would stand Hindley s blows without winking or shedding a tear (Wuthering Heights 59). This is what many people say started the tensions, we placed Nukes at their doorstep, thusly Nikita Khrushchev, the Soviet Premier feared the imbalance of power would prompt America to strike first.
