What Do You Mean?
Instructions
The students on my left side will be Group

Group 2.
Both groups must choose five
representatives who will each act out
different situations I will give them without

Instructions
You will be given two minutes to
act and guess the situations.
The group who guesses the most
answers within the time wins!
How did the
representatives
act out their
situations without
being able to
speak?
What else did
they do to
indicate action
and to help you
understand?

the five categories of oral language
stance and behavior clearly
through an oral presentation;

through a speech choir
performance.
Objectives
Five Categories
of Oral
Language
Stance and
Behavior
Appropriate oral language stance
and behavior makes all the
difference between a boring
conversation and an engaging
one. It influences the meaning of a
speaker’s message.
Stance can be defined as the attitude that
the writer has towards the topic of his or her
message (Smith, 2019). The stance that you
take will greatly determine the tone of your
message and the words that you choose.
Oral language stance and behavior can be
broken down into five categories:
1. Facial expressions
2. Eye contact
3. Posture
4. Gestures
5. Position and Movement
Facial Expressions
Primary means of conveying
messages between humans. It is
responsible in communicating not
only thoughts or ideas but also
emotions (Frank, 2012).
Facial Expressions
The most important thing to
consider when using facial
expression in giving information is
to make sure that you use your
face at all.
Facial Expressions
Don’t give a blank face to your audience. Open your
eyes wider, raise your eyebrows a little and remember
to smile often. If your facial expressions are in line with
the tone of your words, then the information you are
presenting will be clearer and engaging.
In regards with facial
expressions, since we
cannot see each
other when chatting
or texting, what is a
common problem we
encounter?
Eye Contact
The most powerful means of communicating
confidence and conviction (Wyeth, 2014). The
strategic eye contact has the power to change how
people think of you.
Eye Contact
There are three general tips in using eye contact appropriately:
• Have eye contact with everyone in the audience.
• Show your audience that you are not afraid to make eye
contact.
• Avoid staring at someone by keeping your gazes moving
What would you think
or feel if you asked
them a question and
they can’t look you
straight in the eye as
they’re answering?
Posture
The attitude assumed by the body
to maintain stability. Proper
posture plays a huge part in so
many ways. It helps you to stay
calm, look confident and breathe
easily.
Posture
Here are some tips in using posture in speaking:
• Head’s up and don’t slouch
• Feel relaxed during presentation
• Adapt your posture according to your audience
• Have an open and communicative posture
People who slouch
are more likely to
have less
confidence, poorer
self-image, and
suffer from
depression.
Forcing yourself to sit up straight
is a sort of fake-it-till-you-
make-it approach to rebuilding
positive feelings about yourself
and feeling stronger and more
able to literally and figuratively
hold your head up high.
Gestures
Gestures are the movements of the body
that expresses an idea. They are like happy
medium of transferring messages.
Here are some tips in using gestures in
communication:
Gestures
• Be fluid or smooth in using hand
gestures
• Use gestures purposefully in explaining
important points
• Your gestures should look relaxed and
natural
What are the most
common gestures
you use in your
daily life to
communicate?
Position and Movement
The largest physical movement that you can
make. It draws attention to the most important
parts of your speech. Purposeful body
movement complements your message and
adds authenticity to your overall delivery
(Dlugan, 2018).
Position and Movement
Here are some benefits of using proper position and
movement when speaking:
• It reinforces your message
• It increases your ability to connect with your
audience
• It drives away nervousness
• It keeps your energy and enthusiasm
Position and Movement
Body movements to avoid:
• Hands on hips
• Hands on chin
• Crossing your arms
• Swaying back and forth
• Tripping over
Position and Movement
Appropriate body movement and position:
• Stand firm
• Lean forward when delivering important lines
• Pivot your body to indicate conversation
Imagine if I crossed
my arms for the
whole duration of our
lesson, what would
you think of me?
Act it Out
Instructions
Sit in a circle according to your group.
Group 1 - front left.
Group 2 - front right.
Group 3 - middle left.
Group 4 - middle right.
Group 5 - back left
Group 6 - back right.
Instructions
Each group must dramatize their assigned
lines of the poem using the appropriate
facial expressions, gesture, posture,
position and body movement, and
establish eye contact with the audience.
Instructions
Group 1’s lines
In life, there will be people
who hurt you.
Spend more time with
those who love you.
Group 2’s lines
You will make mistakes.
Mistakes are ammunition
against future catastrophes.
Group 3’s lines
You may have regrets.
Unless you can get time back,
focus on happiness
now.
Group 4’s lines
You may lose people you love.
Pour that love on people who need
it.
Group 5’s lines
You will bump against obstacles to
your goals.
Obstacles are challenges
that sharpen your motivation and
resolve.
Group 6’s lines
You may have worries that hold you
back.
Every fear you overcome
makes you stronger and better.
You are overcoming.
