We were giving some parenting pearls of wisdom to a colleague, who's soon to become a first-time father, when it struck me that they were similar to the tips I usually give to first-time managers. Thinking about it, it's not that surprising when you consider that both roles can initially feel quite intimidating, exhausting, and overwhelming, and they throw up some common challenges: - suffering from imposter syndrome - feeling like everyone is staring and passing judgement - having a few sleepless nights - dealing with teething problems - coping with tantrums Thankfully, there are lots of transferable skills that first-time managers can use if they're already parents, and first-time parents can use if they're already managers. I've summarised my top ten tips for new parents on a slide and how they can also be applied to people management. I hope you find it interesting.
