‘Love-Jihad’ to soon be a crime in CM Yogi-led Uttar Pradesh
Vishal Srivastav
Lucknow: Guided by
Chief Minister Yogi
Adityanath’s resolve
to curb the Love-Jihad
incidents in the state,
Uttar Pradesh home
department has sent a
proposal to the state’s
law ministry to imple-
ment a stringent law
to deal with the al-
leged religious con-
version of women in
the guise of marriage.
The development fol-
lows an announcement
by Yogi Adityanath dur-
ing his recent election
rallies that his govern-
ment would implement
a law to deal with “love
jihad”.
A proposal for
strict law against
“love jihad” has been
sent to the state law
department, a gov-
ernment spokesman
confirmed on Friday.
Stressing on the need
for a strict law to deal
with“lovejihad”,UPlaw
minister Brijesh Pathak
said, “There has been a
rise in such cases in the
state which have caused
social disharmony and
enmity. These incidents
are also bringing a bad
name to the state and
therefore a strict law is
the need of the hour.”
“We will do what-
ever is required as
soon as we receive a
proposal from the
Home Department as
we have already made
all necessary prepara-
tions,” Pathak added.
Addressing by-elec-
tions rallies in Jaunpur
and Deoria on October
31, the chief minister
had said his govern-
ment would implement
a law to deal with “love
jihad” and he had used
the Hindu funeral chant
“Ram Naam Satya Hai”
to threaten those who
don’t respect their
daughters and sisters.
Welcoming the Al-
lahabad High Court
ruling which had de-
clared that conversion
for the sole purpose of
marriage is not valid,
the chief minister had
also said that posters
would be put up of all
those couples involved
in “love jihad”.
“We will bring an ef-
fective law. It is my
warning to those who
play with the honour
and dignity of sisters
and daughters by hid-
ing their real names
and identities. If they
do not mend their ways,
their ‘Ram Naam Satya’
journey will start,” Adi-
tyanath had said.
The Uttar Pradesh
state law commission
had submitted a re-
port last year suggest-
ing a new law to check
forcible religious con-
versions in the state.
According to offi-
cials, in Kanpur the po-
lice had earlier set up a
Special Investigation
Team to look into re-
ports of “love jihad”.
State Home department has
sent a proposal to the law
ministry to implement a law to
deal with religious conversions

Private builder encroaches LDA land

Development Authority,
that could not be guard-
ed by the development
authority and is now is
reportedly been en-
croached by a private
builder.
The land at Sector-7
of Gomti Nagar exten-
sion is claimed by a pri-
vate builder and even
the development layout
of the same has been
approved by the LDA,
even without inspect-
ing the stretch of the
land and its ownership.
The latest measure-
ments however found
that the land claimed to
be owned by the build-
er, belongs to LDA.
The builder however-
claims that the Tehsil is
responsible for meas-
urement of the land
and has given him the
ownership and posses-
sion only after measur-
ing the land adequately.
Joint measurement
of the stretch of land
will now to be done by
the LDA authorities to
lay off any sorts of con-
fusions, after which a
final decision will be
taken.
Metering works
have started in the 70
acre stretch of land
situated in between
the Police Building
and Gomti River, Now
LDA will have to
make efforts to win
its land back that
presently is under the
garb of a private
builder.
It is to be noted that
some construction
works also have been
initiated by the builder
on this piece of land.
Nazul officer Arjan
Pankaj Kumar, who is
also the incharge of the
lands here says that the
builder is claiming the
wrong piece of land as
the layout that has been
passed by LDA is situ-
ated elsewhere.
LDA is yet to counter its loopholes.

from the brink.
Butasexciteddoctorsraced
to get the miracle drug to
new patients, the miracle
melted away. In each and
every patient, the drug only
worked only for a while.
It turned out the drug
was very good at killing the
virus, but the virus was
even better at evolving re-
sistance to the drug. A
spontaneous mutation in
the virus’ genetic material
prevented the drug from
doing its work, and so the
mutant viruses were able
to replicate wildly despite
the drug, making the pa-
tients sick again. It took
another decade before sci-
entists found evolution-
proof therapies.
Could the same thing
happen to a COVID-19 vac-
cine?Couldavaccinethatis
safe and effective in initial
trials go on to fail because
thevirusevolvesitswayout
of trouble? As evolutionary
microbiologists who have
studied a poultry virus that
has evolved resistance to
two different vaccines, we
know such an outcome is
possible. We also think we
know what it takes to stop
it. COVID-19 vaccines could
fail – but if they have cer-
tain properties, they won’t.
HISTORY OF VACCINE
RESISTANCE
For the most part, human-
ity has been lucky: Most
human vaccines have not
been undermined by mi-
crobial evolution.
For instance, the small-
pox virus was eradicated
because it never found a
way to evolve around the
smallpox vaccine, and no
strain of the measles virus
haseverarisenthatcanbeat
the immunity triggered by
the measles vaccine.
But there is one excep-
tion.Abacteriumthatcaus-
es pneumonia managed to
evolve resistance against a
vaccine. Developing and re-
placing that vaccine with
another was expensive and
time-consuming, with sev-
en years between the initial
emergence of resistant
strains and the licensing of
the new vaccine.
There haven’t been other
failures for human vac-
cines yet, but there are
hints that viruses, bacteria
and parasites can evolve or
are evolving in response to
vaccination. Escape mu-
tants that are able to evade
vaccine-induced immunity
are regularly seen in the
microbes that cause hepa-
titis B and pertussis.
For such human diseas-
es as malaria, trypanoso-
miasis, influenza and
AIDS, vaccines have been
hard or impossible to de-
velop because the microbes
that cause those diseases
evolve so fast. In agricul-
tural settings, animal vac-
cines are frequently under-
mined by viral evolution.
Depending on how the
COVID-19 virus evolves,
the vaccines could become
less effective. Volanthe-

WHAT WOULD
IT LOOK LIKE?
If SARS-CoV-2 evolves in
response to a COVID vac-
cine, there are several di-
rections it could take. The
most obvious is what hap-
pens with the flu virus. Im-
munity works when anti-
bodies or immune cells
bind to molecules on the
surface of the virus. If mu-
tations in those molecules
on the surface of the virus
change, antibodies can’t
grab on to them as tightly
and the virus is able to es-
cape. This process explains
why the seasonal flu vac-
cine needs updating each
year. If this happens, a
COVID vaccine would need
frequent updating.
But evolution might
head off in other direc-
tions. It would be better for
human health, for exam-
ple, if the virus evolves a
stealth mode, perhaps by
reproducing slowly or hid-
ing in organs where immu-
nity is less active. Many
pathogens that cause bare-
ly noticeable chronic infec-
tions have taken this tack.
They avoid detection be-
cause they do not cause
acute disease.
A more dangerous ave-
nue would be if the virus
evolved a way to replicate
more quickly than the im-
munity generated by the
vaccine. Another strategy
would be for the virus to
target the immune system
and dampen vaccine-in-
duced immunity.
Virus evolution could undermine a COVID-19 vaccine!

COVID-19 WORRIES JOLT
DELHI INTO ACTION
ven as there are encouraging reports on
the development of Covid-19 vaccine, the
viruscontinuestocauseconcerninIndia.
After a surge in fresh cases, Delhi had to
cut down on number of invitees at wed-
dings and other gatherings from 200 to 50, enhance
finefornotwearingmasksfromRs500toRs2000and
launch a house-to-house survey for new cases. Peo-
ple, especially the elderly, have been advised to stay
indoors. These steps have been initiated after the
Delhi High Court pulled up the Aam Aadmi Party
governmentfornotimposingtimelycurbsevenafter
seeing the situation turning bad since November 1.
Situation in the national capital has also been found
worrying by Dr. V.K. Paul of Niti Ayog.
Delhi is not alone in dealing with the Covid cri-
sis. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh re-introduced
night curfew in some of the affected cities in view
of the rising cases of new infections. After
Ahmedabad, night curfew was imposed in Rajkot,
Surat and Vadodara. Night curfew will be in force
in Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Ratlam and Vidisha
cities of Madhya Pradesh.
Under the circumstances, the BJP’s move to po-
liticise the Chhath festival against the AAP gov-
ernment with an eye on Bihari votes was highly
condemnable. The party backed out after the high
court dismissed a petition seeking permission for
Chhath puja. Now it is the turn of the Congress to
be critical of the hefty Rs 2000 fine for not wearing
a mask. Neither BJP nor the Congress thought it
fit to rise above politics to fight the pandemic.
E
IN-DEPTH
BENGAL AND VIOLENCE
DIFFICULT TO SEPARATE
iolence has been the hallmark of West
Bengal politics from the days of the
Naxalite movement, also known as peas-
ant revolt of 1967. It only exacerbated
under the Communist government of
Jyoti Basu neither doing much for the peasantry,
nor for Bengal’s development. Mohalla- level
groups of toughies controlled all activity and trade
unions made it difficult for industry to survive.
The temperamental Mamata Banerjee entered the
scene riding on the Ma, Manush and Maati slogan.
Nandigram violence, controversy over Singur, al-
lotment of land to Tata Motors at Singur, power
cuts helped. Killings, both political and communal,
continued even after she became chief minister of
the state. So much so that the Bharatiya Janata
Party is entering the poll fray on the twin planks
of political killings under Mamata Banerjee’s gov-
ernment and the rise of Islamism in the state.
Six persons dying in a plastic factory blast in
Malda, which the BJP claims was a bomb-making
unit, gave the party the ammo to enhance its fire-
power before the assembly elections. The party is
now demanding a probe by the National Investiga-
tion Agency while Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar
asked Mamata Banerjee to contain illegal bomb-
making. Mamata joined the slugfest with the re-
mark that the issue should not be politicised.
When elections are closed at hand, every death,
every blast will get politicized. Even if a BJP hood-
lum is involved in violence, the blame will be put
at TMC’s door. The effort from all sides should be
to eschew violence. With the BJP desperate to win
Bengal, and the TMC on the defensive, a bitter tus-
sle is on the cards.
V
he human mechanism is a
composite of the physical
body – an accumulation of
food consumed, the mental
body – the software and
memory part that makes in-
dividuals function in spe-
cific ways, and the energy
body – the fundamental
upon which these two are
housed. What is beyond this
is non-physical.
The compulsive and cyclical
nature of the body and mind
render themselves a barrier for
higher possibilities. Tantra is
to go beyond, so that compul-
siveness of the body and mind
does not keep us trapped in our
limitations. Tantra essentially
means “technique” or “tech-
nology.” Tantra is about learn-
ing to use the body, not as one-
self, but as a stepping-stone to
deliver this Being to the high-
est possible dimension.
BLOWING FROM THE TOP
Tantra is not about unbri-
dled sexuality, as assumed
by many. Sexuality is a fun-
damental instinct instilled
in our bodies to ensure the
species perpetuates itself.
This is a basic requirement.
At the same time, one must
know the limitations beyond
which it will not carry us. It
is only on recognising the
limitations and the longing
to touch other dimensions
enters, that Yoga and Tantra
become relevant.
Unlike sexuality, which
tends to find release at the
lower level of the energy sys-
tem, Tantra is about building
our energies to the fountain-
head of the uppermost di-
mension of the energy sys-
tem, so that one’s energies
spill from the top. Of the dif-
ferent energy manifestations
in the body – referred to as
the 114 chakras – spilling
from the top three is consid-
ered the highest. If you have
to build up to this, every ba-
sic instinct, including the
sexual instinct, emotions,
intellect, and survival pro-
cess must be used to build
and hype the energy system.
The intention is to deploy all
instincts for which a certain
amount of energy is dedicat-
ed in the body. If one goes
into an actual sexual act, the
build-up and the purpose of
it will be lost.
Sexual needs can be ful-
filled by forming relation-
ships for that purpose, ei-
ther within or outside the
fold. But using the spiritual
process to fulfill sexual com-
pulsions is reprehensible
and irresponsible. It can
lead to various levels of loss
because the tantric process
is not only used for the indi-
vidual’s spiritual growth,
but also to create an ener-
getic space to support other
possibilities that bring well-
being to many.
YOU DON’T HAVE
TO HUFF AND PUFF
The Guru-shishya relation-
ship is to deliver the shishya
to a higher dimension of
consciousness, not trap one
into the compulsive nature
of sexuality. Above all, this
sacred relationship is defi-
nitely orgasmic, but not sex-
ual. I am talking about up-
grading your technology.
You don’t have to huff and
puff to get into an orgasmic
state. If you sit with your
eyes closed, you can drip
with orgasms in every cell of
your body. Those who have
failed to achieve an orgasmic
state of existence will associ-
ate an ecstatic state with
sexuality because that’s
probably the highest level of
experience they have known.
People always try to take re-
course in the Krishna-Gopi re-
lationship. As the legend goes,
Krishna gave an orgasmic ex-
perience to 16,000 women si-
multaneously. This cannot hap-
pen with sexual union. A
shishya can establish a very
intimate relationship with a
Guru. Intimacy is generally
understood only as two bodies
touching. The body is not inti-
mate enough for one who is on
the spiritual path. The physical
body is an accumulation from
outside, so in the Tantric and
Yogic systems, the body is nev-
er considered an intimate part
of you. Only when energies
meet and mingle and a Guru’s
energies overwhelm and over-
ride the shishya’s energies, it
leads to an orgasmic experi-
ence – a union, but not of the
sexual kind.
If all you want is to do a
meditation or spiritual prac-
tice, you don’t really need a
Guru. The Guru is here es-
sentially to overwhelm you
with nameless ecstasies.
Tantra is a technology of lib-
eration, not enslavement.

Chandigarh: The Pun-

Court has said that
marriage between first
cousins is illegal.
The court said that
marriage which the pe-
titioner (man) wants to
perform with a girl,
who is his first cousin,
was also per se illegal.
“The submission in the
present petition that as
and when she (the girl)
attains the age of 18
years, they will per-
form marriage is also
per se illegal,” the judge
said on Thursday while
hearing the petition.
The assertion came
after a 21-year-old man
moved the high court
against state of Punjab
seeking anticipatory
bail in a case registered
under Sections 363 (kid-
napping), 366A (procu-
ration of minor girl) of
the IPC at police station
Khanna City-2 in Lu-
dhiana district on Au-
gust 18.
The state counsel,
while opposing the bail
plea, contented that the
girl was a minor and
her parents had lodged
the FIR as she and the
man were first cousins
and their fathers were
brothers.
Along with petition, a
representation was also
annexed, in which the
girl had stated that her
parents loved their sons
but ignored her, there-
fore, she decided to live
with her friend (peti-
tioner) and on that ac-
count, she was appre-
hending that her par-
ents can harass them

their mind.

LDA GRAFT A HARD
NUT TO CRACK!
Despite efforts & intentions,
no VC has been successful
in making Lucknow
Development Authority (LDA)
free of corruption. The new VC
of LDA, IAS Abhishek Prakash
has big plans for the department
but a recent case of shrewd
corrupt officials of LDA has put
brakes on his plans. Actually, a
new system of file scrutiny had
been adopted by the LDA to
make the process transparent
and corruption free but a LDA
clerk, without OTP number, not
only accessed the files in the
computers but was also able
to make decisions on them
which involved huge amounts
of money. The clerk reportedly
used the id of a senior officer
and fudged the appropriation
records of a land worth crores.
Now the million-dollar question
is that when the password is
known only to the concerned
officer and he received the
OTP discreetly on his personal
mobile then how could the
clerk have access to the vital
information? This exposes
the ‘Clerk-Officer’ nexus in the
whole act of corruption. The VC
got a cyber expert to investigate
the case and now the whole
game plan is slowly emerging
and it is being realised that
the clerk is only a puppet with
strings being controlled by the
officer. —Ahtesham Siddiqui
CITY CHIEF’S
ATTEMPT TO WEED
OUT CORRUPTION
IN LMC
ThThe city commissioner
of Lucknow Municipal
Corporation (LMC), IAS
Ajay Kumar Dwivedi has
redistributed responsibilities
and departments with an aim to
weed out corruption from LMC.
The wings of, always in news,
RR department and its chief
Ram Nagina have been clipped
and some of his responsibilities
have been handed over to
Environment Engineer Pankaj
Bhushan. When Bhushan
reached the RR department, he
was handed over the charge
or the keys. The day-long high
voltage drama only ended after
intervention of the higher-ups
and finally, Pankaj Bhushan
got the keys and access to the
official room of the department
allotted to him. Now the whole
LMC is gossiping about the
‘full of airs despite being
vanquished’ attitude of Ram
Nagina.

New Delhi: The in-

worth gold and dia-

It said the search and
survey operation was
launched on November
18 and 16 locations in
Kanpur,Gorakhpur,Noi-

of thegroupisestimated

“The source of total
cash found amounting
to Rs 1.30 crore is being
further verified,” the
CBDT, the administra-
tive authority for the
tax department, said in
a statement.
It added that seven
lockers have been
found, which are yet to
be operated.
“The main allega-
tions against the group
are that it has taken ac-
commodation entries
(hawala) of more than
Rs 100 crore in the form
of non-genuine unse-
cured loans from cer-
tain Delhi-based shell
or dummy companies,
unusually high sundry
creditors, suppression
of net profit and also
that a related group chit
fund company had re-
ceived unsecured loans
of several crore from
unknown sources.”
“During the searches,
it has been established
that the shell companies
from which loans had
been taken exist only on
paper and have no real

Muzaffarnagar: More
than two years after an
inter-faith couple died
in police custody in Ut-
tar Pradesh, a case has
been registered against
a sub-inspector of po-
lice, the woman’s par-
ents and four others on
the directions of a
court here.
According to the po-
lice, the case of murder
was registered against
SI Yunus Khan, the
woman’s parents, three
uncles and another man
at Miranpur police sta-
tion in Muzaffarnagar
district on Thursday.
Miranpur police sta-
tion SHO Santosh Ku-
mar Tyagi said they
have begun investiga-
tion into the case.
The inter-faith cou-
ple hailing from Mu-
zaffarnagar district
had eloped in August
2018 and the police
traced them to Alla-
habad a fortnight later
after the woman’s fam-
ily filed a complaint of
abduction.
The couple died on
September 4 under sus-
picious circumstances
near Kanpur when they
were being brought to
Muzaffarnagar.
The man’s brother al-
leged foul play in the
deaths. He moved court
alleging that the police
refused to register a
case to probe the death
of the couple.
ED to speed up anti-CAA probe,
PFI-Bhim Army link under lensNew Delhi: With a
fresh round of ques-
tioning of suspects, the
Enforcement Directo-
rate is set to intensify
its probe into a money
laundering case filed to
investigate allegations
of illegal funds being
used to “fuel” anti-CAA
protests, official sourc-
es said on Friday.
They said the agency
has unearthed some
chats between some
senior office bearers of
the Popular Front of In-
dia (PFI) and Bhim
Army chief Chan-
drashekhar Azad, and it
will seek clarifications
from them.
“The ED is investigat-
ing financial links be-
tween PFI and Bhim
Army on the basis of
credible evidence recov-
ered from senior PFI of-
ficials,” the agency
tweeted.
The tweet was in re-
sponse to a news report
that said the ED has
found “no links” be-
tween the Bhim Army
and the PFI.
Official sources said
the chats found between
individuals of the two
groups indicated talks
about certain activities
in the Jama Masjid area
during the anti-Citizen
Amendment Act (CAA)
protests.
The central probe
agency is also expected
to question some other
linked people in this
case which it is probing
under the criminal sec-
tions of the Prevention
of Money Laundering
Act (PMLA).
The ED, in August,
had arrested former
Aadmi Party (AAP)
councillor Tahir Hus-
sain in this case and al-
leged that cash received
by him was used to
“fuel” anti-CAA pro-
tests and the Delhi riots
that took place in Feb-
ruary.
Hussain, the agency
claimed, has been “ar-
rested in connection
with an ongoing PMLA
investigation into his
role in money launder-
ing and funding of anti-
CAA protests and or-
ganising riots in north-
east Delhi during Feb-
ruary, 2020”.
The ED had booked
Hussain and others af-
ter studying multiple
FIRs of the Delhi Police
crime branch to probe
the riots.
“The probe revealed
that companies owned
and controlled by Tahir
Hussain and his rela-
tives transferred huge
amounts of money to
dubious entities and en-
try operators which
was returned by them
in cash,” it said.
“The cash received
by Tahir Hussain
through entry opera-
tors was used to fuel the
anti-CAA protests and
Delhi riots,” the agency
had said in a statement.
The agency, which is
investigating the PFI
under the PMLA since
2018, has alleged “finan-
cial links” between
these protests and the
Kerala-based organisa-
tion.
It had questioned sev-
eral PFI office bearers
in the past.

Allahabad: The Alla-
habad High Court on
Wednesday allowed
the bail application
of one Aley Hasan
Khan, believed to be
close to former Sama-
jwadi Party MLA
Azam Khan, while ob-
serving that his ‘crim-
inal history’ started
only in 2019 after a
change in the State
Government from the
SP to the BJP.
The 54 cases lodged
against the applicant
were after the change in
the government of the
State. Earlier, he had 3
cases against him
wherein final report
had been submitted.
Those cases were re-
garding minor offences,
Justice Siddharth ob-
served while allowing
him bail upon furnish-
ing a personal bond.
The allegation
against Khan, a re-
tired UP Deputy Su-
perintendent of Po-
lice, was that he lied
about the existence of
a certain judicial or-
der and was in posses-
sion of a forged Aad-
har card and identity
card.
It was alleged that on
being caught by the po-
lice, he produced a copy
of a High Court stay or-
der of August 4, 2020,
but there was no stamp
or signature on it. On
verification from the
High Court’s website, it
was discovered there
was no such order and
the said writ petition
was pending.
The State had vehe-
mently opposed the bail
plea stating that he had a
criminal history of 57
cases.
The allegations
against the Khan in
the FIR were not ful-
ly correct inasmuch
as, “The allegation
that the Criminal
Misc. Writ Petition
No. 1751 of 2019 was
found pending by the
Investigating Officer
on 10.08.2020 is be-
lied from the order
dated 22.01.2019
passed by this Court
disposing of the
aforesaid writ
petition.”
The court observed
that allegation of recov-
ery of forged Aadhar
card and ID proof were
only allegations at this
stage and the applicant
had not admitted that
he was having any such
documents in his pos-
session.

the same time, prepara-

intensified.
According to infor-
mation received from
the Home Depart-

this regard has been
sent to the Depart-

half of the UP gov-
ernment.
In fact, after the Al-
lahabad High Court’s
decision recently, Uttar
Pradesh Chief Minister
Yogi Aditya Nath an-
nounced that a law
would be made against
Love Jihad in the state.
He said this would also
respect the order of the
court and safeguard the
honour of women in the
state.
The Allahabad
High Court had said
in one of its decisions
that conversion for
merely marrying
someone was not
valid.
While addressing a
public meeting in Jaun-
pur district of Uttar

said that conversion for
marriage was not nec-
essary and should not
be recogniSed.
In an important deci-
sion, the Allahabad HC
has said that conver-
sion for simply marry-
ing is not valid.
While hearing the pe-
titions of Priyanshi
alias Samreen and oth-
ers, Justice SC Tripathi
cited the decision of the
Nur Jahan Begum case,
in which the court had
said it was not accepta-
ble to change religion
for marriage.

leaves him for another
man. He cannot accept
it. Never recovers.
‘The Winner Stands
Alone’ is a remarkable
story by the Brazilian
writerPauloCoelho.Itwas first
published in 2008 under the
Portuguese title ‘O Vencedor
Esta So’. The novel is based on
the Cannes Film Festival. He
explores the completely shal-
low lifestyle of the ‘Superclass’,
the dwindling, botox-fed, rich
people who are sucked into the
unending vortex of glitz, glam-
our and extravaganza. Truth
can be so hollow and distorted.
Amidst the chaotic events at
the world’s largest film festival,
Coelho lays bare the fallacies of
the human soul and shows how
downright materialistic our
generation has become.
The story revolves around
Igor, a psychopathic Russian
executive, who comes to
Cannes in search of his wife
Ewa and her new husband, Ha-
mid. Igor messages Ewa that
he will simply go on killing in-
nocent people unless she de-
cides to meet him. And kill, he
does. He has rare intensity and
cold intelligence. He uses the
skills he learnt as a young sol-
dier fighting wars for his coun-
try. With his unlimited wealth
and precision skills, he kills
one young girl, a Braron, an
aspiring actress and a Director.
Each and every character has
been worked upon diligently
and made into something more
than just a name to be oblivi-
ated from memory. Jasmine,
Gabriela, Savoy, even the pa-
thologist are all such ordinary
people stuck in something ex-
traordinary and out of their
own reach. The tale narrates
the tension within and be-
tween the characters in a 24-
hour period.
Ironically, the insanity of
all the senseless killings
makes Igor realise that, after
all, he doesn’t want his wife
back. The plot exemplifies the
dishonesty and false ideals by
killing for the non-existent
passion. His love is nothing
but an expression of his ego-
mania. In a high profile party,
he finally meets Ewa and Ha-
mid and kills them both. As he
is walking out, he ‘saves’ an
aspiring young model by giv-
ing her lift and dropping her
back safely to her apartment-
back to her lady love! This
young raw model of 19 years is
mature enough to understand
and reject the hollow world of
glamour. She tells her partner-
“The person who made me re-
alise this was a man, a foreign-
er, whom I met tonight at the
party, when I was lost in the
crowd. He said, ‘We’re sur-
rounded by people who are full
of certainties, glories and
conquests. But they cannot en-
joy. They’re all at the peak of
their careers and the inevita-
ble descent frightens them.
They’ve conquered worlds
and now fear of change
terrifies them. They are
caught in the vicious cyclic
trap of same parties, same
people, same talks. Insecuri-
ties have replaced passion’.”
Paulo Coelho’s, ‘The Win-
ner Stands Alone’, is the
most graphic and revealing
portrait of our era’s pa-
thology. All are infected
in some way, by the
‘rich and famous’
syndrome. Exhila-
rating & titillating,
this book achieves
so much in limit-
ed time and
words. It
leaves us

  • 1. ‘Love-Jihad’ to soon be a crime in CM Yogi-led Uttar Pradesh Vishal Srivastav Lucknow: Guided by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s resolve to curb the Love-Jihad incidents in the state, Uttar Pradesh home department has sent a proposal to the state’s law ministry to imple- ment a stringent law to deal with the al- leged religious con- version of women in the guise of marriage. The development fol- lows an announcement by Yogi Adityanath dur- ing his recent election rallies that his govern- ment would implement a law to deal with “love jihad”. A proposal for strict law against “love jihad” has been sent to the state law department, a gov- ernment spokesman confirmed on Friday. Stressing on the need for a strict law to deal with“lovejihad”,UPlaw minister Brijesh Pathak said, “There has been a rise in such cases in the state which have caused social disharmony and enmity. These incidents are also bringing a bad name to the state and therefore a strict law is the need of the hour.” “We will do what- ever is required as soon as we receive a proposal from the Home Department as we have already made all necessary prepara- tions,” Pathak added. Addressing by-elec- tions rallies in Jaunpur and Deoria on October 31, the chief minister had said his govern- ment would implement a law to deal with “love jihad” and he had used the Hindu funeral chant “Ram Naam Satya Hai” to threaten those who don’t respect their daughters and sisters. Welcoming the Al- lahabad High Court ruling which had de- clared that conversion for the sole purpose of marriage is not valid, the chief minister had also said that posters would be put up of all those couples involved in “love jihad”. “We will bring an ef- fective law. It is my warning to those who play with the honour and dignity of sisters and daughters by hid- ing their real names and identities. If they do not mend their ways, their ‘Ram Naam Satya’ journey will start,” Adi- tyanath had said. The Uttar Pradesh state law commission had submitted a re- port last year suggest- ing a new law to check forcible religious con- versions in the state. According to offi- cials, in Kanpur the po- lice had earlier set up a Special Investigation Team to look into re- ports of “love jihad”. Butasexciteddoctorsraced to get the miracle drug to new patients, the miracle melted away. In each and every patient, the drug only worked only for a while. It turned out the drug was very good at killing the virus, but the virus was even better at evolving re- sistance to the drug. A spontaneous mutation in the virus’ genetic material prevented the drug from doing its work, and so the mutant viruses were able to replicate wildly despite the drug, making the pa- tients sick again. It took another decade before sci- entists found evolution- proof therapies. Could the same thing happen to a COVID-19 vac- cine?Couldavaccinethatis safe and effective in initial trials go on to fail because thevirusevolvesitswayout of trouble? As evolutionary microbiologists who have studied a poultry virus that has evolved resistance to two different vaccines, we know such an outcome is possible. We also think we know what it takes to stop it. COVID-19 vaccines could fail – but if they have cer- tain properties, they won’t. HISTORY OF VACCINE RESISTANCE For the most part, human- ity has been lucky: Most human vaccines have not been undermined by mi- crobial evolution. For instance, the small- pox virus was eradicated because it never found a way to evolve around the smallpox vaccine, and no strain of the measles virus haseverarisenthatcanbeat the immunity triggered by the measles vaccine. But there is one excep- tion.Abacteriumthatcaus- es pneumonia managed to evolve resistance against a vaccine. Developing and re- placing that vaccine with another was expensive and time-consuming, with sev- en years between the initial emergence of resistant strains and the licensing of the new vaccine. There haven’t been other failures for human vac- cines yet, but there are hints that viruses, bacteria and parasites can evolve or are evolving in response to vaccination. Escape mu- tants that are able to evade vaccine-induced immunity are regularly seen in the microbes that cause hepa- titis B and pertussis. For such human diseas- es as malaria, trypanoso- miasis, influenza and AIDS, vaccines have been hard or impossible to de- velop because the microbes that cause those diseases evolve so fast. In agricul- tural settings, animal vac- cines are frequently under- mined by viral evolution. Depending on how the COVID-19 virus evolves, the vaccines could become less effective. Volanthe- vist/Getty Images WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE? If SARS-CoV-2 evolves in response to a COVID vac- cine, there are several di- rections it could take. The most obvious is what hap- pens with the flu virus. Im- munity works when anti- bodies or immune cells bind to molecules on the surface of the virus. If mu- tations in those molecules on the surface of the virus change, antibodies can’t grab on to them as tightly and the virus is able to es- cape. This process explains why the seasonal flu vac- cine needs updating each year. If this happens, a COVID vaccine would need frequent updating. But evolution might head off in other direc- tions. It would be better for human health, for exam- ple, if the virus evolves a stealth mode, perhaps by reproducing slowly or hid- ing in organs where immu- nity is less active. Many pathogens that cause bare- ly noticeable chronic infec- tions have taken this tack. They avoid detection be- cause they do not cause acute disease. A more dangerous ave- nue would be if the virus evolved a way to replicate more quickly than the im- munity generated by the vaccine. Another strategy would be for the virus to target the immune system and dampen vaccine-in- duced immunity. Virus evolution could undermine a COVID-19 vaccine! COVID-19 WORRIES JOLT DELHI INTO ACTION ven as there are encouraging reports on the development of Covid-19 vaccine, the viruscontinuestocauseconcerninIndia. After a surge in fresh cases, Delhi had to cut down on number of invitees at wed- dings and other gatherings from 200 to 50, enhance finefornotwearingmasksfromRs500toRs2000and launch a house-to-house survey for new cases. Peo- ple, especially the elderly, have been advised to stay indoors. These steps have been initiated after the Delhi High Court pulled up the Aam Aadmi Party governmentfornotimposingtimelycurbsevenafter seeing the situation turning bad since November 1. Situation in the national capital has also been found worrying by Dr. V.K. Paul of Niti Ayog. Delhi is not alone in dealing with the Covid cri- sis. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh re-introduced night curfew in some of the affected cities in view of the rising cases of new infections. After Ahmedabad, night curfew was imposed in Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara. Night curfew will be in force in Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Ratlam and Vidisha cities of Madhya Pradesh. Under the circumstances, the BJP’s move to po- liticise the Chhath festival against the AAP gov- ernment with an eye on Bihari votes was highly condemnable. The party backed out after the high court dismissed a petition seeking permission for Chhath puja. Now it is the turn of the Congress to be critical of the hefty Rs 2000 fine for not wearing a mask. Neither BJP nor the Congress thought it fit to rise above politics to fight the pandemic. E IN-DEPTH BENGAL AND VIOLENCE DIFFICULT TO SEPARATE iolence has been the hallmark of West Bengal politics from the days of the Naxalite movement, also known as peas- ant revolt of 1967. It only exacerbated under the Communist government of Jyoti Basu neither doing much for the peasantry, nor for Bengal’s development. Mohalla- level groups of toughies controlled all activity and trade unions made it difficult for industry to survive. The temperamental Mamata Banerjee entered the scene riding on the Ma, Manush and Maati slogan. Nandigram violence, controversy over Singur, al- lotment of land to Tata Motors at Singur, power cuts helped. Killings, both political and communal, continued even after she became chief minister of the state. So much so that the Bharatiya Janata Party is entering the poll fray on the twin planks of political killings under Mamata Banerjee’s gov- ernment and the rise of Islamism in the state. Six persons dying in a plastic factory blast in Malda, which the BJP claims was a bomb-making unit, gave the party the ammo to enhance its fire- power before the assembly elections. The party is now demanding a probe by the National Investiga- tion Agency while Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar asked Mamata Banerjee to contain illegal bomb- making. Mamata joined the slugfest with the re- mark that the issue should not be politicised. When elections are closed at hand, every death, every blast will get politicized. Even if a BJP hood- lum is involved in violence, the blame will be put at TMC’s door. The effort from all sides should be to eschew violence. With the BJP desperate to win Bengal, and the TMC on the defensive, a bitter tus- sle is on the cards. V he human mechanism is a composite of the physical body – an accumulation of food consumed, the mental body – the software and memory part that makes in- dividuals function in spe- cific ways, and the energy body – the fundamental upon which these two are housed. What is beyond this is non-physical. The compulsive and cyclical nature of the body and mind render themselves a barrier for higher possibilities. Tantra is to go beyond, so that compul- siveness of the body and mind does not keep us trapped in our limitations. Tantra essentially means “technique” or “tech- nology.” Tantra is about learn- ing to use the body, not as one- self, but as a stepping-stone to deliver this Being to the high- est possible dimension. BLOWING FROM THE TOP Tantra is not about unbri- dled sexuality, as assumed by many. Sexuality is a fun- damental instinct instilled in our bodies to ensure the species perpetuates itself. This is a basic requirement. At the same time, one must know the limitations beyond which it will not carry us. It is only on recognising the limitations and the longing to touch other dimensions enters, that Yoga and Tantra become relevant. Unlike sexuality, which tends to find release at the lower level of the energy sys- tem, Tantra is about building our energies to the fountain- head of the uppermost di- mension of the energy sys- tem, so that one’s energies spill from the top. Of the dif- ferent energy manifestations in the body – referred to as the 114 chakras – spilling from the top three is consid- ered the highest. If you have to build up to this, every ba- sic instinct, including the sexual instinct, emotions, intellect, and survival pro- cess must be used to build and hype the energy system. The intention is to deploy all instincts for which a certain amount of energy is dedicat- ed in the body. If one goes into an actual sexual act, the build-up and the purpose of it will be lost. Sexual needs can be ful- filled by forming relation- ships for that purpose, ei- ther within or outside the fold. But using the spiritual process to fulfill sexual com- pulsions is reprehensible and irresponsible. It can lead to various levels of loss because the tantric process is not only used for the indi- vidual’s spiritual growth, but also to create an ener- getic space to support other possibilities that bring well- being to many. YOU DON’T HAVE TO HUFF AND PUFF The Guru-shishya relation- ship is to deliver the shishya to a higher dimension of consciousness, not trap one into the compulsive nature of sexuality. Above all, this sacred relationship is defi- nitely orgasmic, but not sex- ual. I am talking about up- grading your technology. You don’t have to huff and puff to get into an orgasmic state. If you sit with your eyes closed, you can drip with orgasms in every cell of your body. Those who have failed to achieve an orgasmic state of existence will associ- ate an ecstatic state with sexuality because that’s probably the highest level of experience they have known. People always try to take re- course in the Krishna-Gopi re- lationship. As the legend goes, Krishna gave an orgasmic ex- perience to 16,000 women si- multaneously. This cannot hap- pen with sexual union. A shishya can establish a very intimate relationship with a Guru. Intimacy is generally understood only as two bodies touching. The body is not inti- mate enough for one who is on the spiritual path. The physical body is an accumulation from outside, so in the Tantric and Yogic systems, the body is nev- er considered an intimate part of you. Only when energies meet and mingle and a Guru’s energies overwhelm and over- ride the shishya’s energies, it leads to an orgasmic experi- ence – a union, but not of the sexual kind. If all you want is to do a meditation or spiritual prac- tice, you don’t really need a Guru. The Guru is here es- sentially to overwhelm you with nameless ecstasies. Tantra is a technology of lib- eration, not enslavement. Despite efforts & intentions, no VC has been successful in making Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) free of corruption. The new VC of LDA, IAS Abhishek Prakash has big plans for the department but a recent case of shrewd corrupt officials of LDA has put brakes on his plans. Actually, a new system of file scrutiny had been adopted by the LDA to make the process transparent and corruption free but a LDA clerk, without OTP number, not only accessed the files in the computers but was also able to make decisions on them which involved huge amounts of money. The clerk reportedly used the id of a senior officer and fudged the appropriation records of a land worth crores. Now the million-dollar question is that when the password is known only to the concerned officer and he received the OTP discreetly on his personal mobile then how could the clerk have access to the vital information? This exposes the ‘Clerk-Officer’ nexus in the whole act of corruption. The VC got a cyber expert to investigate the case and now the whole game plan is slowly emerging and it is being realised that the clerk is only a puppet with strings being controlled by the officer. —Ahtesham Siddiqui CITY CHIEF’S ATTEMPT TO WEED OUT CORRUPTION IN LMC ThThe city commissioner of Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC), IAS Ajay Kumar Dwivedi has redistributed responsibilities and departments with an aim to weed out corruption from LMC. They said the agency has unearthed some chats between some senior office bearers of the Popular Front of In- dia (PFI) and Bhim Army chief Chan- drashekhar Azad, and it will seek clarifications from them. “The ED is investigat- ing financial links be- tween PFI and Bhim Army on the basis of credible evidence recov- ered from senior PFI of- ficials,” the agency tweeted. The tweet was in re- sponse to a news report that said the ED has found “no links” be- tween the Bhim Army and the PFI. Official sources said the chats found between individuals of the two groups indicated talks about certain activities in the Jama Masjid area during the anti-Citizen Amendment Act (CAA) protests. The central probe agency is also expected to question some other linked people in this case which it is probing under the criminal sec- tions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED, in August, had arrested former Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hus- sain in this case and al- leged that cash received by him was used to “fuel” anti-CAA pro- tests and the Delhi riots that took place in Feb- ruary. Hussain, the agency claimed, has been “ar- rested in connection with an ongoing PMLA investigation into his role in money launder- ing and funding of anti- CAA protests and or- ganising riots in north- east Delhi during Feb- ruary, 2020”. The ED had booked Hussain and others af- ter studying multiple FIRs of the Delhi Police crime branch to probe the riots. “The probe revealed that companies owned and controlled by Tahir Hussain and his rela- tives transferred huge amounts of money to dubious entities and en- try operators which was returned by them in cash,” it said. “The cash received by Tahir Hussain through entry opera- tors was used to fuel the anti-CAA protests and Delhi riots,” the agency had said in a statement. The agency, which is investigating the PFI under the PMLA since 2018, has alleged “finan- cial links” between these protests and the Kerala-based organisa- tion. The 54 cases lodged against the applicant were after the change in the government of the State. Earlier, he had 3 cases against him wherein final report had been submitted. Those cases were re- garding minor offences, Justice Siddharth ob- served while allowing him bail upon furnish- ing a personal bond. The allegation against Khan, a re- tired UP Deputy Su- perintendent of Po- lice, was that he lied about the existence of a certain judicial or- der and was in posses- sion of a forged Aad- har card and identity card. It was alleged that on being caught by the po- lice, he produced a copy of a High Court stay or- der of August 4, 2020, but there was no stamp or signature on it. On verification from the High Court’s website, it was discovered there was no such order and the said writ petition was pending. The State had vehe- mently opposed the bail plea stating that he had a criminal history of 57 cases. The allegations against the Khan in the FIR were not ful- ly correct inasmuch as, “The allegation that the Criminal Misc. Writ Petition No. 1751 of 2019 was found pending by the Investigating Officer on 10.08.2020 is be- lied from the order dated 22.01.2019 passed by this Court disposing of the aforesaid writ petition.” The court observed that allegation of recov- ery of forged Aadhar card and ID proof were only allegations at this stage and the applicant had not admitted that he was having any such documents in his pos- session. YOUR DAYHoroscope by Saurabbh Sachdeva gor Malev’s wife Ewa, leaves him for another man. He cannot accept it. Never recovers. ‘The Winner Stands Alone’ is a remarkable story by the Brazilian writerPauloCoelho.Itwas first published in 2008 under the Portuguese title ‘O Vencedor Esta So’. The novel is based on the Cannes Film Festival. He explores the completely shal- low lifestyle of the ‘Superclass’, the dwindling, botox-fed, rich people who are sucked into the unending vortex of glitz, glam- our and extravaganza. Truth can be so hollow and distorted. Amidst the chaotic events at the world’s largest film festival, Coelho lays bare the fallacies of the human soul and shows how downright materialistic our generation has become. The story revolves around Igor, a psychopathic Russian executive, who comes to Cannes in search of his wife Ewa and her new husband, Ha- mid. Igor messages Ewa that he will simply go on killing in- nocent people unless she de- cides to meet him. And kill, he does. He has rare intensity and cold intelligence. He uses the skills he learnt as a young sol- dier fighting wars for his coun- try. With his unlimited wealth and precision skills, he kills one young girl, a Braron, an aspiring actress and a Director. Each and every character has been worked upon diligently and made into something more than just a name to be oblivi- ated from memory. Jasmine, Gabriela, Savoy, even the pa- thologist are all such ordinary people stuck in something ex- traordinary and out of their own reach. The tale narrates the tension within and be- tween the characters in a 24- hour period. Ironically, the insanity of all the senseless killings makes Igor realise that, after all, he doesn’t want his wife back. The plot exemplifies the dishonesty and false ideals by killing for the non-existent passion. His love is nothing but an expression of his ego- mania. In a high profile party, he finally meets Ewa and Ha- mid and kills them both. As he is walking out, he ‘saves’ an aspiring young model by giv- ing her lift and dropping her back safely to her apartment- back to her lady love! This young raw model of 19 years is mature enough to understand and reject the hollow world of glamour. She tells her partner- “The person who made me re- alise this was a man, a foreign- er, whom I met tonight at the party, when I was lost in the crowd. He said, ‘We’re sur- rounded by people who are full of certainties, glories and conquests. But they cannot en- joy. They’re all at the peak of their careers and the inevita- ble descent frightens them. They’ve conquered worlds and now fear of change terrifies them. They are caught in the vicious cyclic trap of same parties, same people, same talks. Insecuri- ties have replaced passion’.” Paulo Coelho’s, ‘The Win- ner Stands Alone’, is the most graphic and revealing portrait of our era’s pa- thology. All are infected in some way, by the ‘rich and famous’ syndrome. Exhila- rating & titillating, this book achieves so much in limit- ed time and words. It leaves us thinking a n d ques- tion- i n g t h e v a l u e s of the world that we are ac- tually liv- ing in. Seeing how different veggies, meat and spices combine to give that gor- geous flavour, makes you happy. You will enjoy eve- ry bit of the cooking pro- cess, starting from chop- ping to garnishing in the end. Whenothersenjoywhat youhavecookedandgiven your comments about the food, you feel overjoyed, proud and accomplished. Not everyone in this world loves to cook. How- ever, those who love cook- ing are truly lucky, as well as their families. It is a great experience that makes you happy and makes others happy as well.
