The document discusses a YSI project on bullying conducted by Ian O Halloran and Darren Dowd. They chose to focus on bullying because of recent suicides in Ireland due to cyberbullying. They conducted a survey and worked to create a bully-free environment in their Youthreach centre. Their project was presented at the YSI National Showcase and won an award. They were later interviewed on Newstalk radio to discuss their project.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
Â
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasnât one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. Our YSI project on Bullying.
By Ian O Halloran and Darren Dowd
We chose this topic because it is incredibly relevant to everyone in our Centre.
We felt strongly about bullying because we were all shocked by the recent
suicides in Ireland due to cyber bullying. Most of us were using these social
networks at the time and were mortified at the thought that anyone in our
Centre might feel this way.
We decided we wanted to stop any type of bullying happening in our Centre
before anyone could feel so helpless. We called our project âYouthreach bullyfree we are here for yeâ. We held a survey to get staff and students opinions
about this issue. We now have an awareness of bullying and we have all
learned to respect, care and look out for each other and to seek help if we
need it.
We think that now, everyone feels like they belong here in our Youthreach. We
have discovered that there are many ways to communicate our message. The
work we have done is a symbol to us and others to remind us that we are not
alone and people do care.
We were selected to present our project at the YSI National Showcase last May
2012. We won the Award for the Mental Health category and received a
trophy.
A few months later we were asked by NEWSTALK to go on radio to discuss our
project and why we chose it. We were invited to go to their Dublin studio to do
the interview.
On the morning of the interview, we took the train to Dublin, to Marconi
House, where Newstalk, Today FM and Phantom Fm are located. When we got
there we were greeted by Francesca Lalor. Then we met the interviewer Dil
Wikramesinghen. Three students talked and answered questions in the
recording studio. After the interview, we were brought for a tour of the radio
stations and saw how different they are. Overall we had a good day up in
Dublin. The interview was aired 2 weeks later, we were proud of our work.

In Youthreach this year we decided in our YSI project to look at homelessness
because itâs a serious issue. We were helping a charity that helps homeless people
named âCOPEâ. Everyone who was involved came in before 8:00A.M to set it all
up, we were putting up sign for the fundraiser around the Liosban Estate for people
to see.
We were collecting clean clothes, shoes, hats, jewellery, and books to be gifted
to the homeless people on this Christmas time. This fundraiser was held on a
Wednesday on 4th of December 2013 from 8:00A.M until 11:30A.M. The people
were very supportive and we collected some clothes and money. Donations were
welcomed buns and coffee/tea were available to those who contributed. We want to
thank everyone who donated for âCOPEâ. You can take a look at the photos from
the charity day below.
7. Electric Picnic 2013
By Donnacha Gutteridge
This year I was lucky enough to have contacts in Body & Soul and this enabled me to be able
to work at the Body & Soul festival during
mid-summer and the Electric Picnic. This is
a review from my point of view working at
the Electric Picnic.
The Date was the 31st of August. The location?
Stradbally Portlaiose, At approximately 4 pm,
the gates to the last major party of the year, a
10th birthday party, an established hooley, a
sold-out crowd, a fantastic weekend, a chance
to go wild opened. Electric Picnic 2013
covered all bases. The crowd has morphed
from the festivalâs origins. Picnic veterans taking advantage of the offers of cheaper tickets
depending on how many years you had attended the festival, joined a fresh young crowd.
Friday night was scaled down, with just the main stage and Body & Soul open. As the tents
unlocked on Saturday thousands of people flooded the main arena. Crowd-pleasers Fatboy Slim
and Ocean Colour Scene might not be the coolest acts around, but they pulled in enthusiastic
audiences. Personally I was disappointed with Fatboy Slim but that might just be because I had
high expectations. Late at night, the Red Bull Music Academy Stage a.k.a âThe Rave in the
Woodsâ and the Salty Dog stage in the woods provided tunes for those who didnât want to crawl
back to their tents too early. Disclosureâs perfect dance pop wasnât to everyoneâs taste as a latenight main stage Saturday night act, but those who were there had a blast. Personally I think
disclosure were one of my favourite acts of the weekend.
Body & Soul was full of intriguing discoveries, many of them home grown; Daithi, a fellow
galway man, Lisa OâNeill, Tieranniesaur, Le Galaxie, Jennifer Evans and Maud In Cahoots among
them.
The trimmings attendees are used to such as hot tubs, comedy tent, inflatable chapel â are all
very charming, but there is also a sense that the festival must evolve to keep it exciting and not
to become too familiar. There will always be new festival lovers graduating to the field in
Stradbally, but seasoned customers might ask for a little more next year. All in all I found
working for Body&Soul an amazing experience. I donât think my weekend (or week) would have
been the same if I didnât have the sense of community working in Body & Soul. I would
recommend every reader to volunteer as it is an experience you will remember for the rest of
your life. You can volunteer at http://bodyandsoul.ie/get-involved/application-forms. I thought the
Body & Soul arena to be the most enjoyable. There was something for everyone and the music
was pucker.
8. Eminem Slane Castle 2013 Review
By Saoirse Gibney
Eminem brought Slane Castle to a standstill on the 17th
August, treating all of his Irish fans to an unforgettable
performance. The rapper took to the stage shortly after
9PM (over an hour late) and performed for less than 90
minutes. Before he hit the stage he had support from
Slaughterhouse, Yelowolf, Earlwolf and finally Plan B. In
my opinion and the opinion of most other people there
these acts were nothing special and not very well
known in Ireland (apart from Plan B who is quite
popular here). But even Plan Bâs performance wasnât
great and it was almost like they were all killing time for the person we all really wanted to see and
overall the support acts were quite disappointing.
The opening scenes of the start of Eminemâs performance saw a white sheet suspended across the
whole stage with a silhouette of the rapper upon it. This then dropped quickly and he jumped
straight into his new song âSurvivalâ which had the crowd going insane. He was joined on stage by his
Hype Man and backup singers, dancers and band. He sung a various collection of his songs old and
new including his most popular classic songs âStanâ, âLike Toy Soldiersâ, âMy Name Isâ and the song
everyone knows âThe Real Slim Shadyâ. He finally sung âIâm Not Afraidâ and then walked off the stage
leaving everyone thinking it was over as the crowd began chanting âone more tuneâ. Moments later
he came back on stage to deliver an amazing performance of âLoose Yourselfâ while he bounced
around the stage giving a truly enthusiastic show followed by a firework presentation. Unfortunately
Eminem didnât interact much with the crowd until the last song and let his Hype Man do most of the
work before this.
Most fans commented on how good the security at the concert was and a lot of people were quoted
saying they âDidnât see any fights or troubleâ. One of the downsides was the hour long walk from the
entrance to the stage, on which we were searched more than 3 times and followed by members of
the GardaĂ the whole time. Overall the concert was amazingly unforgettable.
9. Review on Breaking Bad: Granite State
I have no idea of how Vince Gilligan and Breaking
Badâs writers plotted how to finish Walter Whiteâs
story, but I have to wonder if the scenario we saw in
the last episode was considered, at some stage, as
the end. Walt isolated, thousands of miles from
home, dying alone, knowing that everything has gone
wrong, knowing that his child hates him, knowing that
his plan to enrich his family has failed and having no
other choice but to do nothing but, wait, and think on what he has done.
I feel like for the last couple weeks that
they have been trying out different
endings for the story of Walter White. His
surrender to Hank in the desert was one way it
could have gone down. His disappearance
into the horizon, last seen in the rear-view
mirror of Vacuum Guyâs minivan, was another.
Even the end of last seasonâs episode run
when Walt was retired, successful and free, in
the company of his family until Hank found Leaves of Grass as bathroom reading, which was
the end for a very dark, cynical version of Breaking Bad.
On the way to his cold and snowy new home, heâs still
nursing the idea that he can âHeisenbergâ his way out
of all his woes yet again. He rants to Saul, in a fashion
which is similar to how I imagined Hitler would have
been that he is not done: âMy money goes to my
children. Not just this barrel, but all of it!â he is of
course talking about the money that Nazi Jack stole
from him at
the shootout in the desert. And no sooner does
Vacuum Cleaner drive down the road, heading
back to New Mexico, than he stuffs his pockets
with money and dons the black hat â an
infamous move that we have subconsciously
grown to now as Hiesenberg â ready to walk the
eight miles to town and⌠and what? He sees he
has run out of practical options. âTomorrow,â he
tells himself. He retreats, takes off the hat, seems
to give up and wait to die. We shall just have to see were Vince brings us in his masterpiece
of a Tv show and how he decides Walter Whites fate.
I will not go any further with this review as I do not want to ruin the rest of the episode for
anyone who is unfortunate enough to have not seen it yet.
Donnacha G over and out.
10. (by Stephen King)
Dreamcatcher, by Stephen King, New York City, Scribner, March 2001, 620
âDreamcatcherâ is a book by the world acclaimed author Stephen
King. This seven hundred page long novel is a mix of sci-fi, mystery
and horror genre. The book tells a story of four childhood friends,
each with their own problems: Pete (who is an alcoholic), Beaver
(who struggles in relationships), Henry (who is very depressed) and
Jonesy (who had a near-death experience earlier in his life), who,
save the life of a teenage boy with Downâs syndrome, and although
they part their ways, their lives are forever changed by this
experience. The story revolves around an event during one of their
annual hunting trips, and throughout the story we learn more about
their past and how they came to be, but we also join them on their life-changing adventure.
I personally think that âDreamcatcherâ is an outstanding book. Stephen Kingâs rich use of
language, amazing storytelling abilities, and wild detailed imagination make the book an
amazing read. The bookâs plot is superb, itâs interesting and immersing, filled with plot
twists and turns, which make you just want to read more, and immerse yourself further into
the book. What made the book the best for me was Stephen Kingâs ability to even up the
progression of the plot but without losing track of whatâs happening, for example, he often
recalls events from few pages back and puts little reminders along the way, so you never
forget of whatâs happening, and donât lose track of the storyline.
Stephen Kingâs imagination and amazing writing skills also allow you to fully immerse
yourself into the book, while reading the book I didnât feel like I was reading at all, but felt
like I was experiencing the events first-hand, his rich descriptions of the surroundings made
it easy to imagine them, while his insightful descriptions of the characters allowed you to
feel like you have actually met and interacted with the characters in the book.
I think the bookâs plot is a very good example of how such different people can become
friends, and how an individual event can form strong bonds with the people youâve
experienced it with.
Overall, Iâd recommend the book to anybody whoâs loves a good mystery, a nice terrifying horror, or
a simple sci-fi storyline. The book is worth the read of every page of this long and amazing book, and
Stephen King does not disappoint and this book proves that he truly is an amazing writer.

11. Miley Cyrus
After recently breaking her own record for
the most viewed video in 24 hours on Vevo
(for non-music related reasons) Miley
Cyrus, once famous for being the squeaky
clean teen from the very popular show
"Hannah Montana" on the Disney Channel
from 2006-2011 is now trying her best to
prove she's not anything like her old
character and its working. After a recent
very raunchy performance at the VMA
rewards with Robin Thicke where she was
seen striping into her underwear, grinding
on a foam finger and twerking with a giant
teddy bear as jaws dropped in the crowd
(not in a good way). Shortly after this she
was seen twerking in her music video 'We Can't Stop' and also made a nude music video
for her song 'Wrecking Ball' she has started being very heavily criticised and branded as a
'meltdown waiting to happen' by famous celebrities like Elton John. She was recently quoted
saying "I was an adult when I was supposed to be a kid. So now I'm an adult and I'm acting
like a kid.". After being proposed at the early age of 19 she is now single and acting out. Will
it last or is she really a "meltdown waiting to happen"?
iPhone 5s Good or Bad?
This year not just one iPhone has been released but two! In this quick review I have decided
to just focus on the 5s instead of the 5c. The iPhone 5s is very similar in looks to the iPhone
5 but fits in a lot more features. Firstly it has a super-fast 64bit A7 processor and now maybe
the quickest smartphone on the market, everything you do on the phone is a lot faster! The
new camera is a 8MP model with a bigger sensor and larger plus more effective megapixels
or in simpler words, better quality and is the best
available on a smart phone! Now how about the
fingerprint sensor? The fingerprint sensor sits
invisibly in the home button and recognises your
fingerprint whenever you use the phone. This
means you are the only person that can unlock
the phone which prevents theft and unwanted
people using your phone which is a great
feature! This phone is very impressive and after
using the new software iOS 7 I would
recommend it to anyone! This is definitely the
most stylish iPhone to date and is a great step
forward for apple.

12. Rihannaâs Style
By Shauna McNamara
Rihanna posted a picture wearing Truly Madly Deeply Blow Me Muscle Tee and Eyelet Levis
Shorts. ($44.00) She also added a black leather ring collar by Von Bondage and a pair of
âRihanna for River Island Boots.
She was spotted leaving Brisbane, Australia wearing an Adidas Firebird Track Jacket and
matched it with a pair of fabulous Ray-Ban Original Wayfarer sunglasses.
Rihanna has also an obsession with her amazing yet sexy swimsuits and bikinis. The very
confident 25 years old shipped into the tiny two-piece swimsuit by Mikon Swimwear Xavier
One Piece showing off her toned and trim figure.
She also showed up at The Video Music Awards After Party (2013) wearing a Balmian Fitted
Dress ($2,545) following it up with a pair of Manolo Blahnick Chaos Patent Leather Ankle
Strap Sandals. ($725)
The reason why I adore Rihannaâs style is that she appears to be doing what she wants to
and having fun while doing it. She has this energy about her that I think everybody like.
Sheâs only 25 and is still only young, who is living her life and doing things her way. What
else is there to come from Rihanna? Weâll just have to wait and see!
Hereâs an example of THE LOOK:

14. Shadow boxing has been around for years and
itâs a good way to keep fit while you are training
for any big event. Boxing is something that has
been around since the early names of boxer
such as Ali, Frazer,. It sometimes gets very bad
press but as a form of exercise we can look to
our recent Olympics gold medal winner Katie
Taylor who has brought this sport back to its
key position in this country. We, as a country, have won most of our medals in
sport in the contact sports and namely in boxing. So I am looking at Shadow
Boxing.
Shadow boxing is one of the most important elements of any combat sport or
martial art. The shadow boxing gives a fighter a good feeling for his technique.
Shadow boxing is a must do when it comes to training.
My TOP TIPS for those thinking of taking it up:
1. Shadow boxing improves your technique; you are able to see yourself
and your movements in the mirror at full speed and you are able to
correct any mistakeâs you are making.
2. Shadow boxing can improve your speed if you do it with weights on your
hands.
3. Shadow boxing is a great warm up for hard-core training.
4. Shadow boxing improves your fitness and cardio shadow boxing is pretty
intense for beginning exercise but it is always beneficial when it comes
to fitness and cardio.
5. Watch others in the ring or on t.v., have a good look at what the boxers
are doing in the ring.
If you are interested in boxing in any form you should head over to The Olympic
Boxing Club in Westside Galway, or on the Tuam Road, Pete Foleys Black Dragon and
if youâre near Ballybane you could try Ken Horan in the Glenrock Business Park.
15. This recipe is one of the easiest recipes for a dessert ever and the best
thing about these little gems is you can make them savoury if you wish by
leaving out the sugar in the recipe and when cooked add cheese, spinach
and ham or else go all out and make your sweet tooth happy with lots of
ice cream and chocolate, which I have chosen to-do but be creative go
crazy.. ď
Dessert Crepes
4eggs lightly beaten
315ml of milk
2tbls of butter melted
128grams all-purpose flour
2tbls of sugar
½ teaspoon of salt
Big spoon of Vanilla ice-cream optional
20g melted chocolate on top â
optional
1. In large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, melted butter, flour sugar and salt until smooth.
2. Heat a medium-sized frying pan over medium heat. Grease pan with a small amount of
butter or oil applied with a brush or paper towel. Using a serving spoon or small ladle,
spoon about 3 tablespoons crepe batter into hot pan, tilting the pan so that bottom
surface is evenly coated. Cook over medium heat, 1 to 2 minutes on a side, or until golden
brown.
3. While your crepes are cooking melt some chocolate over a pan of boiling water until runny
and smooth.
4. Now that your crepes are done put on a plate, put a nice spoon of vanilla ice-cream in and
drizzle your chocolate on top. Wrap up.
Now enjoy this tasty little treat ď

My opinion - I have checked out the pancakes in Mr.Waffle
and they come
in at âŹ4.60-âŹ7.90, by making these at home
you insure you get lots more for your money and you can add
anything you want to them.
16. Traditional Spanish Omelette
ďĄ
ďĄ
ďĄ
ďĄ
ďĄ
ďĄ
ďĄ
ďĄ
500g potatoes
1 Large Onion
150ml olive oil
Handful of chopped Parsley
6 Large Eggs
50g Cheese
Seasoning
Bacon, Mushroom, peppers
ect. â optional
This very easy traditional omelette is
super easy to make and very easy on
the pocket comes in around âŹ10 for
4 you can make various types to suit
any craving. :)
Peel potatoes and cut into thick slices. Chop
onions.
Heat the oil in a large frying pan; add the
potatoes and onion and stew gently, partially
covered, for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally
until the potatoes are softened.
Beat the eggs separately, then stir into the
potatoes with the parsley and plenty of salt and
pepper.( If you wanted to add bacon or
mushrooms or other ingredients add now.) Tip
everything into the pan and cook on a moderate
heat, using a spatula to shape the omelette into a
cushion.
Next add the cheese on top when nearly cooked,
and put under the grill to melt for 3 minutes.
Now put on a plate and enjoyyyy. NomNom :D
Recommendation: When we make an omelette in Youthreach we tend to make a French style omelette.
These are made by not adding potatoes and you fold them in half when there cooked rather than
straight on the plate. The French style is a lot less filling and heavy because they donât have the
potatoes so if youâre looking for the same flavours but not such a big meal I recommend the French
style. But if you really want to check out my recipe for the Spanish above. Donât take my word for it
though, try them both out and make your own decision. ď

17. Gaisce Awards
Tommy Mc Donagh
In YouthReach Galway we are doing the GAISCE Awards, we have the opportunity
to work towards our Bronze or Silver Gaisce Award. We learn new skills and take
part in sporting activities and also a community involvement project in order to meet
the requirements of the Gaisce Award.
As a group we go on quite a few trips during the year all of the students get to decide
together where we would like to go. But the final decision goes to the student council
who take everyoneâs opinion into consideration. The student council meets once a
month in the centre to discuss issues such as bullying, drugs policy and the code of
behaviour within the centre. All of our policies are written after talking with all the
students giving them ownership of their own behaviour.
November 2012 saw 5 students attended the Gaisce Awards Ceremony at N.U.I.G,
and received their medal and Certificate from NUI Galway President Dr. Jim Browne.
Jaki Mitchell, Ashley Whelan (former centre co-ordinator) as well as Presidentâs
Award Leaders (PALâs) were also present.
On the 19th of November 2013 some more of our students received their bronze
awards in NUIG Galway, Sarah Lewis, Saoirse Gibney, Michael McCarthy,
Donnacha Gutteridge, Adrian Zarzycki, Kane Colgan, Victoria Donovan, Leanne
Sweeney and Shane Fallon. All did fantastic work to get their award and we are very
proud of their achievements.
Overall I feel that GAISCE is very rewarding and I feel doing football, basketball,
badminton and other sporting activities on Friday are great for bonding us a group
together.
