Annie is a musical loved by all ages,
telling the time-old tale of the poor
orphan girl who goes from rags to
riches, a Broadway smash hit
that has been turned into numerous
film adaptations.
Annie was originally a popular daily comic strip by Harold
Gray, first released in the 1920’s in the New York Daily News,
called Little Orphan Annie describing the adventures of
Orphan Annie, her dog Sandy and her guardian Oliver ‘Daddy’
Warbucks.
It was then adapted into a musical that we
now know as Annie. The is music by Charles
Strouse, lyrics by Martin Charnin and the
book by Thomas Meehan.
On April 21 1977, the show had it’s Broad-
way premiere at the Alvin Theatre (now
known as the Neil Simon Theatre) with
Andrea McArdle as Annie and Reid Shelton as Daddy Warbucks.
The production ran for six years with a total
of 2,377 performances on closed on January
2nd, 1983. It was nominated for eleven Tony
Awards, of which it one seven, including Best
Musical, Best Score and Best Book.
Since, the musical has been performed all
over the world, both professionally and
amateurly and has been adapted into two
feature films.

Synopsis
Act 1
Act 2
The dreery orphanage is run by the mean-tempered spinster Miss Hannigan,
who works the orphans to the bone. One morning, Annie seizes the chance
to find her parents and says goodbye to the other girls and escapes in a laundry basket
and into the big city of New York.
In the city, Annie befriends a lovable dog Sandy and discovers a Hooverville but
is found by the police and dragged back to the orphange.
However, Annie’s in luck when she’s selected to go to the famous Oliver ‘Daddy’
Warbucks’ mansion, by his assistant Grace, as the orphan he allows to stay
in his mansion during the Christmas holidays.
Reluctant at first, the stern millionaire finds himself charmed by the tough
orphan and decides to adopt her. Grace informs Miss Hannigan of the news,
who is less then pleased, just as she is being visited by her gold-digging
brother Rooster and his floozy girlfriend Lily.
Warbucks tries to give Annie a necklace from Tiffany’s to replace her locket, but
she refuses and explains it was left to her by parents and being reunited with
them is the only thing she wants. Crushed, Warbucks promises he’ll find Annie’s
parents for her.
A radio program called ‘The Oxydent Hour of Smiles’ announce a reward of $50,000
for anyone who can prove themselves to be Annie’s parents. Later that night,
Miss Hannigan, Rooster and Lily hatch up a plan to disguise themselves as
Annie’s parents and claim all the money using Miss Hannigan’s inside knowledge.
Annie visits the White House whilst the mansion is crowded by fakes
claiming to be her parents. Annie cheers up the glum cabinet office
who is under fire from riots protesting against President Roosevelt.
Back at the mansion, Grace sadly tells Annie that of the couples are
her parentsas none of them knew about the locket.
Warbucks decides it’s the time to admit to Annie that he’d like to
adopt her to Annie’s delight.
Just as things are looking up a couple called Mr and Mrs Mudge arrive
at the mansion who know about the locket and claim to be Annie’s
parents. Worst of all they want to take her home to live on a pig farm!
It’s New York City in December, 1933 whilst America is deep in the midst
of the Great Depression. The Municipal Orphanage, on the Lower East Side,
is the home of eleven-year-old Annie, who was left at the orphange as a
2-month-old with only half of a silver locket and a note from her parents
explaining they have the other half and one day they will return for her.
