Analysis of a Music Video

Camerawork
A variety of different camera angles are used such as low angle
shots, mid-shots and close-ups. These are used frequently within
the video and may make the audience feel more involved when
watching the music video. At the very start of the video there are
many mid-shot angles and one extreme close up of both of the
characters within the music video. However, it then cuts to just
Cardi B performing in front of the camera in a mid-shot. There
are some high angles used further into the video when Bruno
Mars is performing with other dancers within the video. This
allows the audience to see the size of the location in which they
are filming for this music video.
Editing
This music video involves many fast edits. This is because, as the
song is very upbeat, it is important that the editing fits the
soundtrack otherwise it would not look right and may ruin the
video. The editing is also done in time with the music as the song
contains many distinctive drum beats. The fast edits also allow
there to be narrative and performance within the video however
there is more performance in this particular video. For example,
at the beginning of the video, as the heavy beat of the song kicks
in, the edits are in time with the edits of Bruno Mars and Cardi B
in the room with paint.
Mise en Scene
In the music video, Bruno Mars is wearing a striped short-
sleeved hoodie with a long sleeved white t-shirt underneath,
blue faded jeans and white trainers. Cardi B is wearing a
gold/yellow cap, a cropped jacket, a yellow t-shirt, faded blue
ripped shorts and trainers. All of the other people within the
music video are wearing clothes of the same style. As the music
video is dedicated to an American rock band – In Living Color,
that were especially popular in the 80s and 90s, they have
dressed according to the style of the band and what many
people were wearing back then.
Mise en Scene
The facial expressions used within the music video are all
extremely positive. This goes with the main concept/storyline of
the music video, especially since they have dedicated it to ‘In
Living Color’.
The lighting of the video is very consistent. It isn’t completely
dark, however it is a more dimmed, darker lighting. However,
this may have been done because the location of the vast
majority of the music video is a warehouse therefore it makes
sense that it has not got the brightest lighting.
Soundtrack
There is a constant, steady drum beat throughout the song. This
works well as it makes the editing look more clean and the beat
keeps the audience interested.
The song is extremely upbeat and catchy therefore it fits the
music video completely. This makes the song and video very
memorable as it is so catchy that the audience cannot get the
beat out of their heads. I would like my music video and song to
have this effect on the audience.
I decided to analyse this video as it is within the same genre of
music that I will be creating a video for. Also, the editing and
camera angles used within the music video are the ones that I
would like to do.
LyricsDrop top Porsche (Porsche), Rollie' on my wrist
(wrist)
Diamonds up and down my chain (aha)
Cardi B, straight stuntin', can't tell me nothin'
Bossed up and I changed the game (you see
me?)
It's my big Bronx boogie, got all them girls
shook (shook)
My big, fat ass got all them boys hooked
(hooked)
I went from dollar bills, now we poppin' rubber
bands (ha)
Bruno sang to me, while I do my money dance
like ayy
Flexin' on the 'Gram like ayy
Hit the Lil' Jon, okay (okay), okay (okay)
Oh yeah, we drippin' in finesse and getting
paid, ow
Ooh, don't we look good together?
There's a reason why they watch all night long
(all night long)
Yeah, I know we'll turn heads forever (forever)
So tonight, I'm gonna show you off
When I'm walkin' with you
I watch the whole room change
Baby, that's what you do
No, my baby, don't play
Blame it on my confidence
Oh, blame it on your measurements
Shut that shit down on sight
That's right
We out here drippin' in finesse
It don't make no sense
Out here drippin' in finesse
You know it, you know it
We out here drippin' in finesse
It don't make no sense
Out here drippin' in finesse
You know it, you know it
Now slow it down for me, baby (slow it down
now)
'Cause I love the way it feels when we grind
(we grind)
Yeah, our connection's so magnetic on the
floor
Nothing can stop us tonight
When I'm walkin' with you
I watch the whole room change
Baby, that's what you do
No, my baby, don't play
Blame it on my confidence
Oh, blame it on your measurements
Shut that shit down on sight
That's right
We out here drippin' in finesse
It don't make no sense
Out here drippin' in finesse
You know it, you know it
We out here drippin' in finesse
It don't make no sense
Out here drippin' in finesse
You know it, you know it
Fellas, grab your ladies if your lady fine
Tell her she the one, she the one for life (woo)
Ladies, grab your fellas and let's do this right
(do this right)
If you're on one like me in mind (ow!)
Yeah, we got it goin' on, got it goin' on
Don't it feel so good to be us? (ayy)
Yeah, we got it goin' on, got it goin' on (yeah)
Girl, we got it goin' on
Yeah, we got it goin' on, got it goin' on (hey)
Don't it feel so good to be us, ayy? (feels so
good on you)
Yeah, we got it goin' on, got it goin' on
We out here drippin' in finesse (we drippin' on
them)
It don't make no sense
Out here drippin' in finesse
You know it, you know it
We out here drippin' in finesse with my baby
It don't make no sense
Out here drippin' in finesse
You know it, you know it (yeah, you know we
got it goin' on)
Yeah, we got it goin' on, got it goin' on
Don't it feel so good to be us, ayy?
Yeah, we got it goin' on, got it goin' on
You know it, you know it
Yeah, we got it goin' on, got it goin' on
Girl, we got it
Don't it feel so good to be us, ayy?
Yeah, we got it goin' on, got it goin' on
You know it, you know it
