nFAPI is a network functional application platform interface that separates the MAC and PHY layers. It defines procedures for initializing, configuring, restarting, and resetting the PNF and PHY instances. The presentation demonstrates the nFAPI initialization procedure which moves the PNF from an idle state to a running state through a configured state by having the VNF collect PNF information, updating the PNF configuration, and creating PHY instances. It also discusses testing the nFAPI implementation using a server and client model between the VNF and PNF on an OAI platform.

Cilium is an open source project which provides networking, security and load balancing for application services that are deployed using Linux container technologies by using the native eBPF technology in the Linux kernel. In this presentation we talked about: - The evolution of the BPF filters and explained the advantages of eBPF Filters and its use cases today in Linux especially on how Cilium networking utilizes the eBPF Filters to secure the Kubernetes workload with increased performance when compared to legacy iptables. - How Cilium uses SOCKMAP for layer 7 policy enforcement - How Cilium integrates with Istio and handles L7 Network Policies with Envoy Proxies. - The new features since the last release such as running Kubernetes cluster without kube-proxy, providing clusterwide NetworkPolicies, providing fully distributed networking and security observability platform for cloud native workloads etc.

The Linux packet filtering technology, iptables, has its roots in times when networking was relatively simple and network bandwidth was measured in mere megabits. Emerging technologies, such as distributed NAT, overlay networks and containers require enhanced functionality and additional flexibility. In parallel, the next generation of network cards with speeds of 40Gb and 100Gb will put additional pressure on performance. In the upcoming Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7, a new dynamic firewall service, FirewallD, is planned to provide greater flexibility over iptables by eliminating service disruptions during rule updates, abstraction, and support for different network trust zones. Additionally, a new virtual machine-based packet filtering technology, nftables, addresses the functionality and flexibility requirements of modern network workloads. o protect the privacy of sensitive application data, we encrypt it before sending it over networks. However, we do not treat sensitive information about the network in the same way. Instead, headers are sent in plain text and leak sensitive information about the network – especially valid host addresses, type of service markings. In our research, we are developing a protocol to also encrypt Layer 3 headers. Using P4, we are able to rapidly stand up and prototype our proposed solution in real code running across real devices. In this webinar, I will introduce our approach and how we used and extended P4 functionality to stand up a prototype. Mark Matties The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab Mark Matties is the Chief Scientist in the Communication and Networking Systems group at JHU APL, where he develops and evaluates SDN solutions to improve network security and performance. At the same time, the Linux kernel is traditionally difficult to change and its development process is full of myths. A new efficient in-kernel programming language called eBPF is changing this and allows everyone to extend existing kernel components or glue them together in new forms without requiring to change the kernel itself.

We present a new open source project which provides IPv6 networking for Linux Containers by generating programs for each individual container on the fly and then runs them as JITed BPF code in the kernel. By generating and compiling the code, the program is reduced to the minimally required feature set and then heavily optimised by the compiler as parameters become plain variables. The upcoming addition of the Express Data Plane (XDP) to the kernel will make this approach even more efficient as the programs will get invoked directly from the network driver.

Cilium is open source software for providing and transparently securing network connectivity and loadbalancing between application workloads such as application containers or processes. Cilium operates at Layer 3/4 to provide traditional networking and security services as well as Layer 7 to protect and secure use of modern application protocols such as HTTP, gRPC and Kafka. Cilium is integrated into common orchestration frameworks such as Kubernetes and Mesos.

By Andy Wingo. Pflua is a fresh implementation of the well-known pcap-filter language (pflang), designed to filter network traffic in the Snabb Switch. It is, to our knowledge, the fastest pflang implementation. This talk introduces pflua, its two compilation pipelines, its performance, and shows a demonstration of pflua filtering traffic at 10Gb line-speed in a Snabb Switch. Packet filtering generally works by taking pflang expressions and compiling them to bytecode for the BPF virtual machine. Pflua, a new pflang implementation, instead compiles pflang expressions to Lua code, which are then optimized at run-time to native machine code by a trace compiler (LuaJIT). Tracing seems a particularly appropriate strategy for the packet filtering use case, as you end up with linear machine code that reflects the shape of actual network traffic. Pflua is a project that lives at the intersection of networking and compilers. Its pflang to Lua compiler builds an AST that is exhaustively optimized, folding constants and tests, inferring ranges of expressions and packet offset values, hoisting assertions that post-dominate success continuations, etc. For compatibility, pflua also has a BPF bytecode to Lua compiler, whch leaves the first layer of compilation to libpcap, while benefitting from pflua's much better run-time performance. Advancements in technology unveil a myriad of electrical and electronic breakthroughs geared towards efficiently harnessing limited resources to meet human energy demands. The optimization of hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems plays a pivotal role in utilizing natural resources effectively. This initiative not only benefits humanity but also fosters environmental sustainability. The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. Additionally, the study provides valuable insights for advancing energy research in economically viable areas. Recommendations included conducting site-specific assessments, utilizing advanced modeling tools, implementing regular maintenance protocols, and enhancing communication among system components.
