The Inexhaustible Work of Mourning Jose Esteban MunozStephen Abblitt
Rogue queer theorist and performance studies scholar José Esteban Muñoz passed away suddenly in December 2013. Personal and scholarly responses to this untimely loss proliferated in the months that followed. This essay reads two exemplary responses—one a collaborative digital collage, the other a short book, the transcript of a lecture—as love letters and works of mourning that structurally carry the horizonal promise of a queer future-to-come, tinged with a queer futurity that interrupts death. This inexhaustible work of mourning Muñoz is an intensely affirmative negation of the possibility of settlement in and for the straight, straightforward present—Muñoz insists, and queer insists, on survival (sur-vivre, ‘living on’) beyond the here and now, to glimpse other possibilities for an unknowable utopic queer future.
