EVALUATION
INTRODUCTION:
For the ‘Promo’ brief the requirements that the client had asked to produce were media and digital
designs to highlight the work of upcoming artists and their performances that the client Eighteen
Promotions represents.
The outcome of the brief should have related to the client and must have included a range of work such
as visual, audio, and digital prints.
The client has given suggestions on what they would like to see which involve ideas that involve a package
of print and video.
The work that could be used to display the artists includes:
 Music video
 Showreel
 Advertising promotional work (EX.) Poster or album cover
 Website design
 Podcast
The client for the brief ‘Promo’ is a newly formed music promoter called Eighteen Promotions who
represent freelance artists and bands. They are looking to interest audiences who range from ages 16-25
for their latest productions to potential venues.
The target audience for the brief is 16-25 years old, so the client would like products which are designed
with a range of marketing materials to appeal to the audience to generate interest and ticket sales to
their gigs and performances.
The kind of work involved to help appeal to the target audience are:
 Music videos
 Social media tease
 Showreels
 Album covers.
 Radio interviews
 Podcast
Although these products need to be made using distinctive styles and techniques involving tools on
different editing software which includes Premiere pro, Photoshop, and adobe audition. This work that I
needed to produce had to be done in a way which relates to the client's expectations and enhances the
audience's interests to help promote artists.
Paragraph 1- Deconstructing and analysing my products.
For my promotional products, the requirements that were needed involved making an audio-visual piece,
audio piece and print work. So, I decided to make a music video, podcast, and print what had helped
towards my ideas was doing my investigation PowerPoint by researching into existing media products.
Music Video:
For my postproduction I began by editing my music video, which was for my audio-visual piece, what had
made my editing better was that I had prepared everything before I started the editing that included
researching existing media and analysing why a music video works well for promotional methods. It
helped me understand that music videos are key factors when it comes to promoting artists because they
display their work, and this will help reach wider target audiences. Researching this helped me
understand how a music video works which is why I decided to use this method for my promotional
products because it was an effective way and it had shown that I linked back to the brief which was to
make products to help promote artists and I had communicated well with the client because it relates
back to what they had asked for.
Following my investigation PowerPoint which I had done for the brief and what had helped with my
products was that I had done deeper analysis on music video and had broken down the camera angles,
composition, lighting, editing, makeup and costumes and the structure on how the music video had been
developed. Going in further and analysing everything had helped me understand the codes and
convention of what needs to be included in a music video which I had mentioned, and it helped me
prepare for my pre-production on how I would structure my music video when I edited it.
Before beginning the production for this brief, I had organised documents which had helped me towards
my music video which was the storyboard this had helped me when I edited my music video on premiere
pro because I had broken down each scene I would do and included in detail the composition and camera
angles.
I had also done the production work which involved client meeting with the band I was working
with which was Pretty Velvet, this was to get their insight on what they would like to do with the
music video and what they would want it to look like when it was edited, we had done test
recordings to which had helped collectively understand what would work and what wouldn’t.
For my final video products, I had made amends that I was given by my audience on the feedback surveys
which involved the typography of the music video, on my previous draft the text was not aligned properly
which made it look quite odd. The text that is shown I had used Pretty Velvets original style of text the
reason for doing this is because it makes it look more like an official music video because I used the bands
official brand style this also contributes to the audience because it will give them a better understanding
of what the context of the video is. The effects that I had used on the typography were just so that it
stands out more from the background, and I had included a fade in and fade out when I edited it on
premiere pro which is useful tool when you are using graphics. The editing techniques that I had used
were skills that I had learned from the previous brief that I had done although they have now developed
more because I have a better understanding of premiere pro.
The screenshot shown is improvements that I had made from my previous drafts, I had gotten insight on
what could be changed from my audience who suggested to add another clip in because the beginning of
the video was quite long, I think made the video better and more interesting because it wasn't just a still
shot.
My reasoning for choosing the clips was that after we had shot everything, I had looked through the
footage to see which videos were suitable and made a folder in my one drive I went with ones that were
like what the band wanted to see.
Talking about the Mise En scene of the music video the style of the music video was a performance, the
reason for filming it in that way was because we had already planned with the band about what they
would like to do, previously they had already done a story narrative.
The lighting that has been used has been a bright hue the reasoning for this was linked back to when we
had the client meeting and the band had explained what they had wanted to see they had also
mentioned this in the group chat with examples and videos for inspiration, we had made sure that the
saturation was correct when we had done the test runs. This makes the video look a lot better because it
highlights all the details, and it works for the target audience because it is from ages 16–25-year-olds and
the style itself is trendy.
The editing process took three drafts which had shown development and improvements on each music
video, I had gotten Feedback from my target audience from a survey that I had done this was important
because I understood what my audience liked and what they thought could be done better. The way it
was edited works out well because runs smoothly and it is in beat which matches with the style of the
band which is indie/rock.
The costumes and the equipment that is included within the music video had been put together by the
band and this works for the codes and conventions of what needed to be added in a music video, it
makes it more realistic because it relates to the band members because it is their own clothing and
equipment and it also links back to my investigation and pre-production on what I researched on the
band and also how I had planned to shoot and edit the music video.
PRINT WORK:
For my postproduction I had made started to make my print work which included me making promotional
poster and I had also made a podcast cover, what had made my print work better and run smoothly was
that I had prepared beforehand by researching the codes and convention by analysing a bands poster and
what a poster needs to include and what the advantages of making a poster is. It helped me understand
what how I can also edit it to help capture target audience attention.
Before beginning my editing process, I had completed my pre-production which includes all the
documents to help me plan how I will be making my products to help me with my poster. I had made a
flat plan which helped me plan how I designed my posters which including what kind of photograph I
wanted to use, the kind of layout, typography, and colour scheme.
When I began editing using photoshop I had started off by using photographs that I had already
organised in my folder on one drive, and I started to edit my podcast cover. I went through many
drafts and making surveys so my audience can give me feedback, but this was my final podcast
cover.
For my final podcast cover draft I had made some adjustments to the typography because the
style that I had used before did not match and seemed out of place. This made the cover look
better and it kept it consistent and balanced and because it is the same font that the band used,
and I showed it across all products this helped promote the band which also links back to what I
needed to do for the brief. My investigation had also helped me for whet needed to be included
in my podcast cover because I had researched the codes and conventions of what needed to be
included to make a suitable cover.
Font used for first draft:
Font used for final draft:
When I had adjusted the style of the edit it made it look better because it was much bolder, and
it stood out more compared to my first draft. It helped set the mood and tone of the image
especially with the colour I had chosen because it is a dramatic colour and its aesthetically
pleasing and it helped outline all the details on the edit, this links back to my investigation for
when I had analysed what elements makes a poster a good promotional product. This product
helps grab audience's attention because it highlights relevant information.
I began to edit a promotional poster which included all the band and I had done some separate
ones too, but for my final one I had decided to go with the one that had all the band in.
FIRST POSTER DRAFT:
For my first draft that I had made I thought it went well on the editing side it included a good
colour scheme which made aspects of my edit darker and some lighter which made it contrast
well with each other, it highlighted a lot of details and the style worked and matched. I had
included the right codes and conventions which was needed for poster like the layout,
typography, and colour scheme.
The typography that I had used was a test run to see if it would work which at the beginning, I
thought it was quite good, although I did then realise that it did not really match the aesthetic of
the poster itself and it looked out of place compared to the rest of the text. What really helped
me through the editing process was doing the surveys to get my audiences opinion, this is so I
know what I could improve.
IMPROVED POSTER EDIT:
For my improvements I was more focused on the text and changing the way it looks, from
getting the feedback from my audience it had also showed that the main text could look much
better, I had used the bands typography that they use it looked much better than the other it
included much more detail and it look consistent. It had given the poster a much better style and
it looked more suitable and professional because I had used the bands own typography branding
and it worked for the brief because I promoted not only Pretty Velvet, but I included other
valuable information such as their upcoming single. I was successful by responding to the client
and showing my skills that I had developed.
MY OTHER PRINT WORK:
These are the other promotional products that I had made, and I used the individual band
members. I liked how all my poster had turned out, they all have distinctive styles and I have
shown my development of skills in photoshop by using different tools that highlighted how I
made promotional products. During these processes I had also made several surveys for my
audience so they can give me feedback towards my products this helped everything run a lot
more smoothly.
PODCAST EDIT:
What I had been asked by the client to do was and audio piece, I decided by doing a podcast
which had involved interviewing a couple of the band members to get to know more about them
it was successful because it is a good promotional method.
The elements that I helped me towards doing my audio piece was understanding the advantages
of a podcast and what needs to be included, doing my investigation is what gave me a better
understanding because I had researched existing media types and I had also went into analysing
podcast themselves it helped me prepare for when I had to do my own and also when I needed
to edit it on adobe audition.
To ensure that my podcast ran smoothly, for my pre-production work where I had to do all my
documents, I had made a script about different question that could be asked to the band this
was to make sure I was organised before I had to the production.
FIRST PODCAST DRAFT:
When I began my editing on adobe audition, I started off by focusing on fixing the audio levels
because they were to quiet, using the skills I had developed and the tools I had understood how
to use such as the amplify and compression tool. The audio needed good sound levels as this was
what made a good podcast, this was only my first draft I still needed to add in the codes and
conventions which is needed for a podcast and that had included intro and outro and
background music if possible and the use of the bands upcoming song that can be added.
I had asked for feedback from my audience about what improvements could be added and they
had mentioned elements that I had added on my other drafts which was adding some
background music or adding in some of Pretty Velvets upcoming song, I had needed to amplify
the sound at the end because it was a bit quiet.
I had made another couple of drafts one which had included background music, and another
which show a sample of their song, this was much improved from the first draft. On the other
drafts it included much more codes and conventions which added more detail to the podcast
and made it seem much more engaged which had helped towards the audience. It worked well
for the brief, and I responded well to the client by making an audio piece to help promote artist
and by adding in Pretty Velvets song I have included elements that is linked with them. I
responded well to my audience feedback, and I had made the changes that were necessary to
make for the podcast to work.
PARAGRAPH- REFLECT ON THE STAGES.
Doing this project, what had helped me throughout was investigating existing media products it
had given me a better understanding on how the media products work to make successful
promotional products, this also included the codes and conventions that are included within the
media products to contributed to promote artists to target audiences. When I had researched
the client themselves, I understood more about who they are and what they do, which had
helped me reach their expectation for the brief.
Pre-production I would say helped me a lot because I had pre planned everything for the
production by making all the documents needed. I knew exactly how I wanted my products to
look like, also how production was going to go by getting all the elements needed for the
products in efficient time. Everything had helped me meet my deadlines for my work and it
made everything run smoothly.
Before doing my final products, I had experimented with drafts to see what would work and I
had asked my audience for feedback tow which I had gotten a lot of detailed information back
on what I could do to make them better. This helped towards my progress and development
towards this brief by understanding my strengths and weaknesses. It made my products look
much more detailed and realistic and I understood what my target audience would have liked to
see to get them to got to music venues and performances to help promote audiences.
The software that I had used was premiere pro, photoshop and adobe audition. These software’s
were much easier to navigate because I had learned the skills from the previous brief ‘Film the
City.’ I would say my skills are much more developed because I understand a lot more technical
effects within the software's, which includes synchronising up clips in premiere pro by using the
waveforms to match the audio clips. Also making my typography much more detailed by using
the essential graphics and including the codes and conventions needed for music videos such as
end credits.
For photoshop my products looked more developed and detailed by using the tools to make my
posters looks more creative, and showing unique styles I have learned which helps them
standout such as find edges and using effects on text by adding bevel and emboss and drop
shadows.
The podcast had helped me develop my skills on how to correctly amplify audio and adding in
the codes and conventions of a podcast with including intros, music, background music and
including the bands official song. I had also made my own podcast cover to include with the
podcast.
Working on the production helped me develop my skills by using professional equipment like
cameras, box lights, studio lights, microphones, I also developed my skills on collaborating with
clients and I conducted my work professionally and worked hard to make sure we had all the
footage needed to make my products for the brief.
I had taken on feedback very well listening to what my audience has to say because these
products are targeted towards them. I responded to the feedback and adjusted if I needed to.
I came quite close to the original brief responding well to the client's information given to what
they would like to see. I had made products relevant to the brief using the right elements such as
the correct codes and conventions for what is needed for these products. I had also selected
suitable photographs and videos of the band to make my products.
I have learned a lot for the experience by working with other and the band to make everything
run smoothly. I would continue with using the skills I know in the different editing software.
What I would do differently next time would change the order of the clips I used in the music
video.
