Through her short film and supporting materials, the filmmaker aimed to challenge conventions of coming-of-age media. The film follows a girl from ages 11 to 23 through recurring images of her crying at pivotal moments. It explores themes like relationships, adolescence, and personal growth. Stylistically, it uses techniques like shaky camerawork and montage to portray the protagonist's journey from childhood to adulthood within 5 minutes. The poster and website similarly challenge typical designs through unique visuals and formatting while still providing key information about the film. Overall, the media product examines the protagonist's maturation through relatable scenarios and emotive storytelling.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2. 1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP AND
CHALLENGE FORMS OF CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS
• I have created a short film for my media product, as well as a film poster and website to support my main product.
• This story is a short film coming of age following the growth of a young girl named Zaina from ages 11, 17 through to 23.
Zaina’s story is told through the recurring image of her crying at various points in her life, charting her adolescence through to
emotional maturity where she is finally seen to have tears of joy. Therefore I decided to name it Six years forward, following
her every six years for three years.
Through the use of Target Research, I have followed and challenged their perceptions of
childhood, such as including the two main scenarios of House Parties, and Homework and
challenged a successful ending of settling down with a partner. The main idea I wanted to
portray across my short film is that It being Relatable. Whilst considering to produce a
fictional animation short film, I wanted a strong factor that a wide target audience could
relate back to and engage with short film.
I think that choosing a short film has been challenging but been extremely interesting in
learning the codes and conventions and aiming to fit in 12 years in 5 minuets
3. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP
AND CHALLENGE FORMS OF CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA
PRODUCTS
• Narrative
• Levi Strauss - Binary Opposition, eg. Good v evil. Taking advantage I used this method through the use of youth and maturity,
the stages faced have a been contrasted to show to growth of a young girl through adolescent to adulthood.
• Propps - theory of '7 broad characters' were completely challenged throughout the opening title sequence apart from perhaps the
Villain, who was clearly the main character. Propps argues that pieces of narrative media all contain at least a phew of the
characters being the 'hero, princess, donor, dispatcher, false hero, and the villain'. Throughout the sequence the audience only
see the protagonist,
• Barthes - The enigma code is heavily presented within the opening sequence. Following two of his 5 stages, the enigma and
Hermeuntic code. I did this by presenting much mystery into the narrative. Working to maintain the setting up the mise en scene
to create tension, throughout the sequence I used powerful background music, non diegetic ambience and the recurrence of the
young voice over.
• Torodov – I challenged his narrative theory which states that most story's or plot lines follow the same pattern or path of going
through an Equilibrium, Disruption, realization, restored order, equilibrium the end. With my short film, it follows the stages of
disequilibrium first, as followed in most coming of ages to set the scene. This was also good, as my limit for 5 minuets, I needed to
engage my audience so by diving them into the deep end, by starting with a sudden disruption not only allowed to cause tensions
and questions but gave my more footage to develop my story rather than start right from the start.
• With most coming of age, it normally starts with an ‘inciting incident’ creating a specific desire that the protagonist faces, which
starts them on the path to change. Which is shown throughout Six years forward.
4. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP AND
CHALLENGE FORMS OF CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS
• I have been inspired by films such as Boyhood, One day, and edge of seventeen. Throughout narrative,
shot types, angles, editing.
• Boyhood homework scene – Throughout the film in Boyhood, a recurring element of frustration that the
protagonist at a young age faces the stage that every school student becomes overwhelmed with;
Homework, therefor I decided to carry that through as a main factor that could effect an 11 year old. By
following how this scene was shot, and using this scenario it made it very relatable to my audience.
• One day – appearance long to short hair, in detail. Whilst watching One day, every year the lead actress
stars, her physical appearance tells the audience the change in time. I noticed that as some women grow
up, cutting their hair from long goldilocks to a short, length does look stereotypically older. When I found
out my main actress was considering to cut her whilst in the production stages I took to that advantage to
wait and film, to show the audience.
• Edge of 17- I watched this at the beginning of pre production, which gave me a full insight for what was
going to be the 17 year old scene – scene 2. Whilst watching the films, I could really relate to it, and
therefore was very determined on how Roger Vernon ( The director of photography) made sure to
include many hand held shots, and created purpose shaky footage in scenes when aged 17 could be
seen as uncomfortable.
5. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP AND
CHALLENGE FORMS OF CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS
As part of my ancillary, I chose to create a poster. To gain inspiration I analyzed 10 posters, all non-
animation but with varied genres, due to a coming of age film poster doesn't necessarily have a key code and
conventions, as I found a coming of age normally comes along with a subgenre.
After producing around 4 drafts with different texts and colours, I felt that the text with too bold, and
superficial, so I came to a decision to explore fonts and to download them through font websites, I used a
website called Dafont, which allowed me to search through thousands of fonts, I picked a hand writing section
because I wanted to make it look like a youths handwriting, linking with the first scene, the homework scene
as growth like a diary.
Inspiration – My main three film posters for inspiration were After math, boyhood and moonlight. I wanted to
create a bold image, although challenging. After analyzing 10 posters I thought that I had got the hang of
codes and conventions but challenged the main coming of age poster which I was most influenced by due to
the physical appearance aren't the same and noticeably different to merge three faces together.
Challenging codes and conventions – Thin writing style normally very spaced, long capital letters that are very
bold and impactful.
photography – close up of main protagonist, eyes in background, ally way. To create mystery. I put the ages of
11, With the Dark alleyway she walks through, in the film.
Editing – fade, dark contrast, tears in background, Photoshop opacity level low.
6. • I chose to make a website for my other ancillary, I decided to create it on Wix.com . In the process for this I
reviewed 10 film websites on my blog. With each website they all followed roughly the same format but
made every single website personal in adapting to their film.
• So each website had a home page which enabled the audience to settle and familiarize themselves with
the bases of the website. Normally on the homepage, includes a link or inserted trailer, which I included.
Although every homepage, either had a solid background colour, logo or an image of the film, I decided to
challenge this and use a 4 second montage of 4 clips each around a second of footage, on repeat of the
growth of the protagonist. Also a menu bar, that allows the viewer to access more pages. In some cases I
found that there was just one page of content that you just had to scroll down on. Although I included a
menu bar, which went to 5 other pages.
• The other pages, included a gallery, which I followed most the film websites, which includes posters and
clips. I just put in edited photographers in of the actors and a film poster.
• For my target research, I had made an interview for evidence when questioning the actress so I put that
into the ‘about’ page as Sara Masud talks about the short film, and me questioning her explains the
reasons why, the genre and FAQ’S.
• I created a collection of the ‘funny’ parts of the production of making the short film, and inserted it into
‘extras and bloopers’ as mostly all websites have a extras page.

• Codes and conventions of coming of age shot types
• Elements and scenarios could be considered such as virginity, pregnancy, drugs, home life, relationships and
friendships. I have used relationships, adolescence, recurrence of a tear, home life, settling down, the use of normal to
drastic changes can be extremely relatable to my audience
• films of this genre are normally effective as it would be able to relate to certain parts of the storyline or character,
Relatable – carried out market research, focus groups, questionnaire, opinions, polls to get what had happened in my

• normally targeted at a teenage audience, however they can include explicit and themes which could rise the rating to

old enough so they can relate to an extent , see what's coming, it will only get better Characters Macy Owen to Sara
physical appearance, fan of bob Marley, self identity, hair change and brighter colours.
• In media studies, coming of age is a sub-genre from Drama. Coming of age dramas are targeted at a teenage
audience. This concentrates on the growth and maturity of a protagonist from the youth to adulthood. Coming of age
films tend to emphasize dialogue or internal monologue over action. Coming of age/ drama element to Six years forward.
• Drama, sense of suspense, age 17 scene white noise to block out sound, thinking, crying, emotional, hormonal. Not much
dialogue, emphasised in sound and background music to bring in tension
• Themes of maturation, acculturation, loss of innocence, wisdom or acumen, and worldliness are often present. Loss of
innocence in scene 2, drinking at age 17, parties and not worried about homework but relationships. Innocence from age
11, see change in character in 17 and 23. Wisdom, ring singing settled down, right direction. Gaining more experience

CAMERA / SHOT TYPES
I challenged and followed shot types in my short film. At the beginning of the film, opening establishing shot,
from outside a window in a gradual zoom, following codes and conventions are starting with slow opening,
establishing where she is. This shows when she is 11 years old. Inspired by edge of seventeen I used a heavy
amount of point of view shots to represent her frustration and emotions through her eyes, also over the
shoulder almost acting as a metaphorical burden . My favorite shot from this scene, has to be the calculator
shot. When young Zaina picked up the calculator, it changed to almost to a worms eye view, in the calculators
perspective. To do this I placed the camera at a very slanted angle pressed against the table, and flipped my
screen so I could see what Macy was pressing. I put a plastic film over the lens so it didn't get fingerprints on it.
Whilst this happened I pressed the calculator buttons to make it look more realistic.
In the second scene where Zaaina is 17 years old, I used a vast majority of hand held footage inspired by edge
of 17 and boyhood. As well as close ups, where I was filming was a very small area so hard to get wide shots,
long shots but in the opening of scene 2, I managed to get a birds eye of the protagonist and her partner in bed
which sets the scene nicely, when she wakes up we see her initial reaction which then changes shot. I made
sure to shoot in manual to get the right exposure and focus right in production. My favorite shot in scene 2,
age 17, is when in the A.M, the lighting was perfect, and the shaky footage looked so realistic, and was
inspired heavily by the edge of seventeen, the director of photography is Doug Emmet, who also was D.O.P to
The to do list and the bachelorette who are a hybrid between coming of age as well as drama.
The last scene, scene 3, where Zaaina is aged 23. Her life is started to fall into place , and her being happy .
This scene, inspired by the film One day, The slow paced footage, lots of tracking at the beginning following
her journey. My favorite shots of this scene, has to be the circular sounding shot, which 360 degrees captures
her and her environment. Really brings a connection with her character and surroundings of the house. Making
the audience feel welcomed.
9. • EDITING
• After shooting, I transferred all my footage into organized folders, so each scene wouldn't’t get jumbled
up with drafts and other misplaced footage. With each scene I would place into IMovie, the software I
ended up editing on to make my short film. Inspired by one day, I made sure to use colour correction
and titles a big emphasis onto my short film. Challenged boyhood, which looked like raw footage which
was just placed together, making it look almost like a documentary in some shots. By using dates the
separate each scene, I noticed from audience feedback, it gave a better overall understanding from the
audience, and made sense in such a short time frame.
• In scene 2, when Zaaina is aged 17, I used the ‘cross fade’ transition to show that time has passed, and
help with continuity. I also used image stabilization where the hand held footage was too shaky, and
needed to be calmer. I relied heavily on colour correcting scene 2, in contrasting the flashback and the
morning after. I used a very yellow, warm tone to the party, night life vibe in parts of scene 2, along with
music which is followed by the inspiration of The edge of 17. whilst using a very blue tone, harsh cold
colour to the morning after, which ambience and silence. There is a consistent amount of faced paced
jump cuts to reinforce the drama and tension in this scene.
• Whereas in scene 3, where Zaaina is aged 23, more light is added, very uplifted and brighter. To show
the audience that, she as a character is finally happy. I also used image stabilization for this too. As this
circular shot was hard to film to get smooth unless filmed with an actual glide cam or stabilizer. Also
whilst editing my film, I thought it would be ideal to use the rewind effect in the short film, to convert it
into a film and in the fastest speed possible rewind it back to the start, to almost create a sense of

MISE EN SCENE
The mise en scene had a big part to play in creating this short film following stereotypes from Boyhood, One day and Edge
of 17, the main physical visual that appears through a coming of age film is the appearance in charters over the period of
time filmed and portrayed. Therefore I made sure the physical appearance was constantly changing in each scene, but
also to fit in with the era of the short film to make it seem more realistic.
So in scene 1, was acted my Macy Owen, portraying a ‘young Zaaina’ in the film. This worked out to be in the year of
2005, so therefore, Zaaina would be in her first year of secondary school. For this I made sure that the character would be
in school uniform, using props such as exercise books, small text books and snacks. I asked my friend, who did all of
Macys makeup, for scene 1, to get right lighting, and the shiny reflections from the harsh lights I used to make it look high
key.
In scene 2, I made sure that a strong appearance change as I couldn't’t find someone exactly the same as Macy to act but
Sara Masud then played scene 2, 3 of the short film to help keep it consistent. Scene 2, was centered around a ‘rebellious
teenager’ in this scene Zaaina was aged 17 in 2011. Which meant the clothing had to be of what a teenage girl would wear
in 2011, which happened that Sara (the actress) was a teenager in 2010 roughly the same age as the character in the
short film. We filmed in her University apartment in London, which we made look her a teenagers room including bright
duvet covers, dark pop band clothing and heavy makeup. The surrounding environment was set out to be a party, so lots of
drinks, as it was a university accommodation, I saw many empty bottles which I filled with water to look realistic. In the
morning scenes, we made sure to film at 7am to make it look dark and the sun was about to rise. It was very quiet and her
makeup was smudged all over her face.
For scene 3, Zaaina was aged 23, in the year of 2017 (again to keep it more relatable to the audience can come to terms
with it now), I followed the idea of one day, as throughout their journey in the film, her hair gets shorter in the last scene, I
felt like this signifies maturity, so when filming I found out my actress was going to cut her hair short during December time,
I waiting till she had to film the last scene. In this scene, I made sure she wore brightly coloured clothes, very in fashion
was 2017 and also, brought a ring which was placed on her engagement finger to let the audience acknowledge she is
engaged, to later reveal her finance through the use of texting.
11. Sound
Sound had a key concept to play in the short film as it’s a very short amount of time to fit in a narrative, things need to be quick and
compact but also effective in creating tension.
However I decided to challenge this in parts and follow in some elements of my short film. Throughout 10 short films I reviewed and
analysed, almost all of them had diegetic speech in them, and background non diegetic sound. Although I wanted to challenge this. In
creating a short film, which background and non- diegetic sound would create most of the tension and narrative.
Therefore I decided to record a voice over to explain why in scene 1, Zaaina was so upset about her homework issue, which is later
revealed as she sees her self as a failure. This voiceover is then repeated throughout the revered time-lapse at the end of the short
film in scene 23. I think it helps bring a more thorough understanding of the narrative. I downloaded royalty free background music in
scene 1, whilst Zaaina was doing homework I thought the background sound of papers brushing past each other, wasn't picked up
enough so therefore to increase tension and to lead up to her melt down I used a slow but gradually increasing background music to
make the scene more dramatic .
In scene 2, at the ‘morning after; clips I downloaded an ambience sound, named ‘outside from the inside’ this sound used wind, cars,
and bird chirps, this is because I muted the real footage to do the background noise of me moving was very overpowering. So I
replaced that with a recording that sounded appropriate. For the party clips I downloaded a audio that but a beat in the background,
with a heavy unclear bass and music, and then I downloaded a recording of many people talking, merged them together to make it
sound like a party. This is what happens in film, especially a party scene, they put in music during the editing stages, so its not cut up
but in sync with the frames.
In scene 3, I used diegetic speech which merged to a sound bridge half way through, the voice over, did become very unclear in some
parts due to the high background noise which I tired to reduce. If I had to do it again, I would re film that scene and film away from a
main road, or wait till cars have passed.

12. 2. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION
OF YOUR MAIN AND ANCILLARY TEXTS
My main project was to create a short 5 minuet film, but to also include two ancillary texts. I had
the choice of a film poster based on my short film, A magazine article reviewing my short film or
a website for my short film.
I decided to chose to create a poster and a website. Synergy is ‘working together’, and how
everything compliments each other. I have utilized synergy between my media products through
the same style of typography to create a sense of belonging and help my target audience
recognize my short film, website and poster and instantly relate back to it. I have also kept in
mind the subgenre of being a ‘coming of age/drama’ which I have followed key conventions
through out the three ancillaries.
The main aim for my poster was to create a sense of mystery in the readers mind, I wanted to
show the use of tears, and a physical change in appearance but also make the main actress,
Sara Masud stand out. I think the use of her red coat brings the poster together with the
juxtaposed dark background.
The main aim for my website was to entice my target audience to want to watch my short film,
and show the growth from youth to maturity in the website as well as the short film.
13. HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF
YOUR MAIN AND ANCILLARY TEXTS
I have created more than 5 drafts, for my poster to make sure I got what I achieved and aimed to do.
The first draft was more experimentation in colour curves and exposure and saturation, I really liked the bold white
lettering but I felt it looked more of a horror than Coming of age due to the harsh red, black colours and the bright
fluorescent colours in her inverted skin. So therefore I changed to a more drama type of film poster. I continued to
watched tutorials on YouTube , learning about layering, opacity and editing with more cinema colours grading. Whilst I
found the main concept behind my ideas by merging three images together, the next element I had to work out was
the font and text. I then found a font named ‘Childs writing’ with I over layers in a light pink, with white underneath to
give
When contemplating whether to use sans font or sans serif font, I thought that I would look better with Sans Serif font,
in capital letters as it meets codes and conventions with a typical poster. I then wanted the font to be the same color
as her skin, linking the text to the protagonist in a personal way.
14. • I am overall pleased with my poster, as I like the colour combination and the bold portrait
picture which stands out. Although my main weakness is most probably the boldness of the
text. In the bulky capital font before, it stood out although it didn't’t fit with the concept and
genre so when I found ‘child's writing’ the most challenging part of this was when I applied it to
my poster the pack didn’t come included with the numbers in the font, nor its option in bold so
my only option was to keep the thin font. To overcome I duplicated the text and changed the
text colour to white underneath to try the 3D layer effect to create an illusion that the text can
appear bolder and bigger. If I were to do this again in the future I would carefully plan out my
overall idea and possibly take the background images again. To make it more noticeable.
• I do think that the poster links synergy with the short film due to me using photography from
scenes in the short film, connecting a visual emotion of the tear droplets and using where she
walked in scene 3.

So this is the

used the website
Wix to create this
Whilst using wix.com to
create my short film website, I
found that there was more to
just choosing a template site
and insert text and pages. I
discovered that I can make it
my own, and personalize it to
my short film. I noticed that I
haven seen a website that
has a moving clips behind the
back and wix allowed me to
do it.I also made a short 40
second trailer, based on all
the footage, to put into the
website, to help promote my
short film, I attached my short
film to the homepage also.
Then in my website I
created a menu bar, to
place the titles and links
to each page. Again
keeping with the same
Title font to keep
consistent, although I
changed to black so its
more easier to see

In the about page, I
added the interview
video I produced, to
allow my target
audience to understand
the film through the
actress’s view and how
film student see’s the
film.
The ‘bloopers’ page
gives the audience a
behind the scenes feel
to the short film. Which
helps to engage the
audience, and show
them how much I
enjoyed producing this
short film.
The gallery page, is an accumulation
of the portraits I have edited and
taken of the actresses/actors along
the way of production. In here relates
back to the poster as there are some
of the pictures I used to create the
poster as one whole image. So the
single images are in this file.
18. • Overall I’m very happy with my website, my favorite page is my home page due to the
montage at the beginning really gives the audience a 4 second summary of what my story is
about, as it links very well with the short film, and it has easy access to the short trailer and
short film. I'm also proud that I made an additional trailer in iMovie, and from scratch as there
are templates for making a trailer in iMovie but I downloaded my own music, credits and used
my own transitions and footage, which made it effective link to my short film better than a
template.
• If I could do it again I would create more written content not just visual clips that talk about the
story, bloopers and the about. Even develop on a ‘cast’ page. But I'm overall pleased with
how it looks and how it has complimented with the poster and short film. Although the colour
scheme and use of tears aren't with the poster, but do relate in scenes, and can display
another emotion which is shown in the short film.

19. 3.WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
So for my target research I held an interview, questionnaire, screening and focus
group. This helped me in more ways than I intended. By doing three completely
different types of research I think I have specifically chose the right elements in my
short film to make this effective for my target audience of 15-18. used improvements
and also challenged them.
For my questionnaire I used Survey Monkey to gather over 100 responses, in relation
to to start my short film. I aimed and promoted my survey monkey at teenagers to
answer the questions. These were very helpful as they helped me understand and
acknowledge what my target audience will want to see and expect. This feedback has
been incredibly helpful, and guided me into choosing the right narrative, actors and plot.
20. • Questionnaire.
3.WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
I first asked 100 people how old are you, their
ages. With this response i did mainly ask 16-21
year olds as they are on social media primarily a
lot. This result was expected and has shaped their
opinions in further questions I asked due to their
generation and age.
I made sure I mainly asked females these questionnaire
questions due to me filming this short film based on a
journey through the life of the girl to women. This helped
me analyze what going through a females mind through
different ages. As i later ask scenarios which would be
suited best and more relatable.
21. 3.WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
This was as expected, as youtube is the main video
station. Instagram recently opened up the 1min time limit
for videos. With this popular entertainment pages are able
to piece together a short film under a minute which is free
and quickly assemble to hundreds of followers and
viewers. Its easily shared with people who give comments
in a fast social media platform. As well on twitter, a little
video can go a long way with the power of retweeting.
Shortfilmoftheweek is an amazing website which shows
hundred of new short films every week, In a variety of
genres. I stumbled across this when i was researching
short films. Its very helpful and got so many creative
ideas. I was surprised that the audience would of known it.
With this information I then uploaded it to youtube to get a
bigger audience viewing.
22. 3.WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM
YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
These results were very diverse. I didn’t expect
character to get so many hits. But this did work in my
advantage as i’m focusing on a girl and how she
changes throughout time. With these results i needed
to work on editing, from this definitely looked at
tutorials to produce the most effective piece of work. To
help with continuity in shooting I always made sure to
re-film over, to make sure each cut was smooth and
seamless.
Although I did find that mise en scene was hard for a
coming of age film. The physical appearance was hard
to make effective in such a short amount of time to
produce but by Sara cutting her hair off, it added an
extra element that the character really had grown up.
23. 3.WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR AUDIENCE
FEEDBACK ?
So this initially gave my a-lot of reassurance that my
target audience liked my overall summary of the short film.
And it has given me more confidence in knowing at least
80% would be interested to watch.
I was indecisive on keeping it shuffled or chronological on
this so i decided to ask my target audience which one they
prefer. I went for the majority of chronological order as it wont
confuse my audience and it will make them relate back to the
story line easier. But I used a shuffled narrative in scene 2,
the party scene to show flashbacks.
24. • My last question was the most important, I have asked
this throughout all my forms of feedback . So the most
popular scene got house parties which I used, as I feel
like most 17 year olds get to experience an amazing night
at a house party. It shows our stereotypical audience and
it will show how she grows from a little year 7. I
challenged 'bullying' option as i feel that is extremely
stereotypical and young children do often face that but its
very often dealt with whereas a first day of school and
stress from homework can be rarely experienced. So I
wanted to create a scene in that.
• I think that my feedback from my questionnaire was very
helpful in identifying what appeals to my target audience
and what they would want to see and who would see it.
3.WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
25. • In my interview, I got the chance to interview Sara masud (the main actress) as well as a
film production student at kings college Emily Rose . Who studies with short films about
social realism/ drama films. From this interview I learnt that this is a very unique, most short
films have a plot which they conquer.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSAjeY6vGPA&t=9s
• So regarding my short film, i have produced an interview with the main actress Sara Masud
who plays Zaina in scenes 2 and 3. As well as this i got the chance to interview Emily Rose
a film production student who gave me tips and tricks when filming as well as reading my
script and story board she gave me useful advice as seen in the video. I filmed this on my
canon 760D, and edited it in iMovie as its very simple clips just to put one after the other. I
had previously researched some film interviews and realized they put in little backstage
clips, clips of the film but in silent so the audience can still here the actor/actress speaking. I
then copied this and i feel it made it more engaging and easier to watch as we don't just see
the interviews face. When filming the interview i first asked Emily rose to film me asking the
questions to Sara as we only had one camera, we couldn't film a two way shot. But too
make it like the 180* rule i then filmed Sara replying back to my answers. In a different shot.

26. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
• The questions I asked Sara, was primarily to get her opinion and perception of the film and how she
relates to as, as she in in my target audience range.
• She helped me shape the story line as well as given me ideas, and other deeper concepts of the film.
• Aswell as questioning and talking to Emily Rose who is a film student, she helped me gather ideas and
ways to film that I have adapted along the way to help my produce my short film.I learnt many tips and
tricks when interviewing Emily Rose, first by using the stabilizer that I didn't’t know, and how to see if the
shot was in focus.
• From Sara’s answers, I got her perception from what the short film was about in her eyes and how she
could relate to it, which was helpful as she is turning 23, so her acting out really was an ‘eye opener 'for
her. As Sara is a student, who did drama and performing arts as an Alevel, she helped me shape the
scenes, as well as the interview questions, I looked back later to gather her thoughts, and the genre she
had picked to describe the short film.
27. • Focus group
• So a couple months ago I held a focus group of three people who I am targeting this short film for. I
sat them in a circle and asked them a series of questions and asked for their honest feedback.
• I asked
• Macy owen – aged 17 PINK,
• Aaina Joshi – aged 18 ORANGE
• , Zeeshan Afgen – aged 17 (only just turned 17) GREEN
• I sat them down in a room, and asked them 5 questions.
• What is your first impression of the title ‘Six years forward’?
• what is your first impression of the title tears ?
• What was the most memorable/significant time of being 11 years old ?
• what was/is the most significant time of being 17?
• where do you see yourself at the age of 23?
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM
YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
30. • The main question I asked them happened to be the title of the film
being 6 years forward or tears. Which they picked six years forward as
its more catchy and they preferred it to the other one. This gave me a
quick choice otherwise I would still be changing it if I hadn't asked.
• Asking them the age questions face to face made this more real
experience as they told my their initial memories and thoughts that
came to mind with little hesitation, and they also explained their answers
such as stress of homework at the age of 11, freedom as well as
relationships at 17 and settling down and engaged at 23. Which I have
successfully included as my main top three scenes.

YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
31. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM
YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
• On the 15th of December i did a screening of my first draft, short film. i
had a total of 20 students watch my short film, Although it were the first
draft with a couple scenes and audio very muffled and not working so
feedback as expected. I used survey monkey to create a survey, and
google classroom to promote it to the class. I aimed very open and
closed questions to get very straight to the point answers but also an
opinionated answers to collect a range of strengths and improvements I
held the screening in my media room, for my media class to view and
give me feedback. I created a survey online on survey monkey to record
their thoughts. From this I went on to improve and develop my draft 1, to
draft 2.
32. • .
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM
YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
So this was my first question, which I was very happy
with. This closed question cut straight to the point
because my later question is relatively the same but
answered in more detail. From this response it
reassured me that my target audience understood my
message and thought I was conveying through these 3
short scenes.
With this question, in draft 1, music was very dominant
although at this point there was no voice over added, just
heavily dominated music, mainly non copyright
background/soundtrack music, which I was pleased fitted
into the scene, I should of approached this as an open
question and asked why, so it would help me identify what
is better suited in the atmosphere for the audience who
responded with ‘sort of’
33. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM
YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
This open question was the most helpful as 16 participants
said a variety of different improvements, mainly on the audio
and colour correction which I have tweaked and perfected in
adobe and iMovie. So from this I have adjusting the colour
correction in all scenes to keep it consistent, I have taken out
footage and clips which have not been in focus, grainy and
dragged the short film down.
I have challenged the third improvement, as the length has to
be five minuets long, and the only shuffled scene was scene
2, the morning after/party scene where Zaaina is aged 17.
Although to improve this I did try to make it clearer by
keeping the dates, at the beginning of each scene
consistent, colour grading the separation between the warm
toned party and the harsh use of blue tones on the morning
after to divide the footage into two. I also included more
footage in the second draft, but making each shot shorter so
added in more jump cuts.
I added a voice over to balance out the loud muffled
background noise, and to add another dimension to the
narrative to why she's so worked up in scene 1.
34. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM
YOUR AUDIENCE FEEDBACK ?
This was successful as it gave me reassurance
that my audience can understand the main
principle of my short film just from draft one. The
latest response gave me an idea of the
voiceover which is definitely an idea that I used
so my audience can understand it a lot more.
A majority of males
watched this
screening, when
this is aimed at
young females at
this age of 15-20
year olds. Although
most did state they
could relate in
scenes 1 and 2, as
this is the stage
they are currently
going through. I
used this from
researched I used
before to use this
scene
35. Whist my research stages, I analysed 10 of each of the ancillary examples. So 10 film websites, 10 film posters and 10
short films.
HOW DID YOU USE NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN THE
CONSTRUCTION, RESEARCH, PLANNING AND
EVALUATION STAGES ?
WordPress is a website that
allows you to create blogs and
own websites for a
personal/educational or
business use, starting at no cost.
I used word press to document
all my work as a blog, to use as
evidence, to discuss my
research and a portfolio to the
build up of my final project.
I have used this to upload my
final cut for my short film, poster
and website address
Vimeo is another video uploading
platform, which I used to search for
short films to analyze. Through this I
watched two short films, which helped
me influence my short film.
IMDb, also known as Internet
Movie Database, is an online
database of to do with
Movies, Tv programs,
actresses, production crews
and anything film related. For
my planning stages I used
this to see and get into depth
about the cast and directors.
As well as cinematographers
in the productions I analysed
and was inspired by.
YouTube is also a video search engine
which I watched most of the short films I
analysed. This was helpful as there are
many short films on YouTube which I
found relatable to my genre.
36. HOW DID YOU USE NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION,
RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES ?
Classroom
For my research stage, helpful
resources where on our google
classroom account for out
media class.
With this I put my survey link on
google classroom so that
people could access the link
and give me feedback on my
research and complete my
survey
Also advice and theorist was on
google classroom to produce
more blog posts
I have used Survey Monkey twice
throughout the production of my
short film , as it has helped and
made an impact in every
decisions I have made due to
audience views and preferences.
I chose to use survey monkey out
of all the survey makers on the
website as it allows you to
analyze your results after, and
create a whole varied range of
questions and provides boxes,
and lots of types of sharing links.
Short of the week is a website for
new short films that have been
uploaded and won awards, a very
high standard of short films.
For my research used this to watch
good quality short films, to gain
inspiration and motivation, also to
analyze in my research stages on
my blog.
37. • In my planning stages, meant all documentation such as shot lists, scripts, animatic, and storyboards
submitted, with this I used some technologies to help me produce these documents.
HOW DID YOU USE NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN THE
CONSTRUCTION, RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION
STAGES ?
I used YouTube to upload my animatic. I used
this platform as it was the easiest to compress
the animatic's file, to then embed into
WordPress with a link.
I used iMovie on my mac, to produce my animatic's it was the
most simplest platform to create this and it had a crop/ken burns
tool which helped make the animatic more effective
I used my 2016
MacBook pro to save
and make all my
planning on, as it has
enough storage to keep
all my documents on,
and it took it with me
whilst the production
stages.
I used google drive to save all my documents such
as the script, shortlist and story board, so I could
have access to them at school as well as my
laptop. This was helpful because it gave me
reassurance incase I lost the documents on my
laptop.
38. • In my production stages, producing my two ancillary's and short film allowed me to use new media platforms and
develop my understanding of ones I have used before to help my construct my project.
HOW DID YOU USE NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN THE
CONSTRUCTION, RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION
STAGES ?
I used a Canon Legria f25 for
my first shoot for scene 1,
although I had much trouble
exporting the footage onto any
pc as its internal storage, so I
didn't’t end up using it for my
final cut . However I really liked
how the footage came up from
what I saw on the screen as is
has a built in stabilizer, and
shoots in 1080p
This is the camera I used for my poster
picture and to shoot all the final footage.
This says it shot in 1080p although on
YouTube it comes out as 720p. The
quality wasn't’t as good as the Legria
but it liked the flip screen as birds eye
view as it made it easier because it
gave me more control on what I was
capturing. Also as my camera is a DSLR
it gave me manual control on exposure
to set the right lighting.
For the voice over I
used a in microphone to
record a clear sound. I
should of used this in
other parts of the short
film as the background
noise was picked up.
On the first day of
shooting scene 2, the
memory card decided
to stop working and not
become compatible
with the camera, so I
went out in London and
bought a san disk which
worked with the card.
39. HOW DID YOU USE NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN THE
CONSTRUCTION, RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION
STAGES ?
I bought the adobe creative
cloud, in As media to then
go on to use from of the
applications in A2 media.
In the photoshoot for the
poster and website gallery, I
used adobe bridge for a
contact sheet, illustrator to
help with text and shaping,
and Photoshop for the
overall poster.
I have used Photoshop to create
the film poster for my short film.
With so many different tools
Photoshop has to offer, I created
many designs, by using different
layers and adjusting the image in
layers and curves. The main tool
I used in Photoshop was the
opacity tool as the poster was
very layers with imaged.
I used iMovie to edit my short
film as when I started editing in
premier pro, it didn't’t allow me
to create the certain effect I
wanted it to.
As well as it took five times as long to render and
sequence everything than iMovie which was
straight forward, as well as compatible with my
MacBook touch bar making the clipping and
cutting to be more precise, and layering audio
was helpful as I used to overlap non diegetic
clips.
40. HOW DID YOU USE NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION,
RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES ?
After my first poster draft feedback, the
text was the main improvement as the
Ariel bold was seen too standard I
made it relate to my work. So from this I
went to Dafont which is a website that
has 1000’s of texts which allows you to
download and use in text software's. I
used child's writing as a font, which
relates more to my short film as a
coming of age short film.
I have used wix, to make a website
on my short film for free, there were
hundreds of templates to chose from,
but I decided to start from scratch as
I built it through inspiration from film
websites I had analysed in depth to
follow codes and conventions
through those media texts.
I used YouTube to upload
my drafts, trailers,
website extras and I also
used it to gain experience
in editing and colour
correction in my short
film. But also looked up
many tutorials to help me
in Photoshop in the
poster
41. HOW DID YOU USE NEW TECHNOLOGIES IN THE
CONSTRUCTION, RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION
STAGES ?
In my evaluation stages, I
have decided to write my
evaluation in power point as
I’m most familiar with this
software than google
classroom, as I can do it
without internet and help me
place images better in
PowerPoint.
I have decided to use slide
share, to upload my
evaluation onto, as its free
with a linked in account,
and I can easily embed
this with a link to my blog,
in word press. Its easy to
upload and allows the slide
to appear as a accessible
window in my blog, without
a link which google slides
can have.
Overall in my opinion, I think that the
overall combination of media
platforms and technologies I have
used, have shaped and helped create
my short film, website and film poster
the way is it.
Though I have carried what I have
learnt from As media, has developed
my deeper learning in the
technologies I have previously used,
which I have now used them and
adapted them appropriately.
