AIR was founded in 1992 to address deforestation in Guatamala and its effects. It trains local farmers in sustainable agriculture and forestry practices, establishing tree nurseries and providing fuel-efficient stoves. AIR has now trained over 2,000 farmers, planted over 3.7 million trees, and constructed over 800 stoves. Besides tackling climate change, AIR works to prevent mudslides through replanting trees with deep root systems and educating farmers on sustainable land management. Reforestation and more efficient cooking methods are improving livelihoods while allowing the land to recover from past deforestation.
