Deforestation
Project Group 10: Kelly
Kingsbauer, Ireland Dopson,
Brittny Hamilton, Erich Rayher.
 Results from humans
removing or clearing
large areas of trees
without sufficient
reforestation.
 Results in declines:
habitat and biodiversity,
wood for fuel, industrial
use, and quality of life.
PRO DEFORESTATION CON DEFORESTATION
 Deforestation can produce
an income for farmers,
national economies, and
land developers. It can also
create millions of jobs for
people.
 Deforestation adds on to
the greenhouse effect, since
rain forests help control the
climate. It also causes loss
of habitat and extinction.
 Deforestation helps create a
large income source for
governments, which helps
stimulate the economy.
 The trees that we cut down are
used to make wood products
such as, furniture, paper,
pencils, housing, ect.
Companies selling these
products make a great income,
since these products are
always in command.
Now that the trees are being cut down, it is
making more room for road ways, farming
land, and businesses to build. This will
help stimulate the economy.
 The biggest reason for deforestation is
agriculture. Farmers need lots of room for
planting crops and grazing livestock.
According to National Geographic, small
farmers will each clear a few acres to feed
their families.
Most people working in forest mostly have
no other job opportunities.
Even though may not be beneficial to forest,
the short term outweighs the long term.
Once forest area is clear, workers can build
a farm/plantation and create a consistent
source of income.
From farming to wood work, the job
opportunities are endless.
Many jobs involve lumber work.
Creates many
different revenues.
Beneficial to the
many struggling
economies.
After forests are
cleared, different
commercial
properties such as
malls are built and
more jobs are
offered.
WHAT IS THE
GREENHOUSE EFFECT?
 The trapping of the sun’s warmth in the planet’s atmosphere
due to greater transparency of the atmosphere to visible
radiation from the sun than to infrared radiation emitted from
the planet’s surface.
Deforestation envolves logging, mining,
oil and gas extraction, and cash crops.
When trees are removed, carbon dioxide,
which is a greenhouse gas, will no longer
be absorbed by the trees.
Carbon dioxide than leads to the effects
of global warming.
Loss of forests have contributed up to
17% of global greenhouse emmissions
(The Guardian)
DEFORESTATION THREATENS OUR
WAY OF LIFE.
Deforestation affects the climate. Trees provide
shade to keep the soil moist. Without protection
from sun-blocking tree cover they quickly dry out.
Trees absorbs water when it rains and when there
are no trees, the water causes floods and droughts.
 According to Nation Geographic, trees also help
perpetuate the water cycle by returning water vapor
back into the atmosphere. Without trees to fill these
roles, many former forest lands can quickly become
barren deserts.
 When the ecosystem has
been changed dramatically
by human activities, it
causes problems for the
environment to work
together.
 When deforestation occurs,
it ruins the place for our
animals to live and survive.
All trees are knocked down,
causing the land to be in
“unlivable” conditions for
plants and animals.
 According to WWF, habitat
loss is probably the
greatest threat to the
variety of life on this
planet.
 Having your environment
ruined by deforestation,
will not allow the plants
and animals to be able to
get the food and water
they need to survive.
Forests need to be protected!
Pressuring corporations and markets. This
means holding their suppliers accountable
for producing commodities in a way that
has a minimal impact on natural forests.
Ask yourself if you're buying something
you need.
Buy post consumer recycled products.
