2. THE IDEA
Our film idea is of a doll that cannot be seen by people until it kills them, and
this doll targets 5 teenagers which are in the park where she was dumped.
We chose the idea of a horror movie because all of us favor the genre of
horror and also, horror is an easier genre to work with in the terms that it is
easier to recreate. It is easier to make someone scared than laugh.
The context of our horror movie derived from various influences.
• Cabin in the woods- the secluded area and its logo which uses dark colors
• Chucky- the main character and the idea of the slasher doll
• Insidious- the costume and a human being a doll
• The unborn- the use of a nursery rhyme to produce fear
3. THEORY
Our film is based on Todorovs theory which follows:
• Equilibrium
• Disequilibrium
• Recognition of disruption
• Attempt to repair disruption
• Change to a new equilibrium
This is for the whole of our film, due to the fact ours is only a film
opening we will focus on the equilibrium. There will be a flash
forward occurring in our opening which will show the
disequilibrium and partially show the attempt to repair the
disruption.
4. The name
We decided we wanted the name to be the name of the
doll.
We decided the name of the doll by conducting a poll
containing the names: Scarlett, Lucia and Nancy.
Scarlett became the name of our film.
We chose Scarlett as a contender because Scarlett
represents a shade of red which represents danger. Also
the word „scar‟ is associated with the scar on her head
which represents her being harmed. Contrasting
this, Scarlett is a traditional girly name which demonstrates
innocence, which juxtaposes the original idea.
5. The characters names
We chose the names by researching meanings of
names and then suited it to the personality of each
character, excluding Scarlett.
This showed research and planning in depth and also
allowed us to give further detail and meaning to our
characters. This helps the audience establish the
characters more.
6. STORYLINE (THE
OPENING)
1. A group of teenagers going to the park drinking and having a
laugh. The boys are asking the girls if they want to hear a
“scary story”
2. A flash forward occurs where we first meet Scarlett.
3. Scarlett is alone with the one survivor and the survivor sees
the swing swinging but not the doll.
4. The doll is singing a nursery rhyme.
5. The survivor is calling for help on her phone when the doll
appears behind her and says “ready or not here I come”
6. The flash forward then ends and it returns to the equilibrium.
7. LOCATION
Initially we wanted to film our opening in the forest but
we found that this was too common with A level
students recreating horror, therefore we changed our
location.
We changed our location to the park as it seemed
most suited. The doll is a product for children, and the
park reflects a child's location. This is the connotation
of innocence also, juxtaposing this we thought that a
park at night seemed eerie and scary so we thought
our film opening would fit perfectly in a park at night.
