Film Opening Analysis :
Star Wars Episode V
The Empire Strikes back
Josh Pyne
Scene one
Lighting : the lighting is neutral. Meaning it is nor
light nor dark. The light is not at all complex in this
scene as it is set in space and is just a titling
sequence.
Sound : we can hear the star wars theme, which is
non diegetic sound.
Editing : The font of the titling goes away from the
camera, in a star like fashion
Scene two
 Lighting : : the lighting is neutral. Meaning it is nor light nor
dark. The light is not at all complex in this scene.
 Sound : the non diegetic music turns minor as we are
confronted by a spaceship, indicating its an evil one.
 Editing : relatively fast pan downward from the titling, this
shot is just an establishing shot of the giant space ship, this
is to give the audience an idea of whats going on.
Scene three
 Lighting : Bright, it isn't dark, the light seems to be naturally
provided in the shot.
 Sound : both non diegetic and diegetic sound. We can hear
the beeping of the robot. But also hear some sinister
background music.
 Editing : There seems to be a graphic match, the pod
crashed into the planet and then it cut to a clip of the root
rising out of the crater. Editing is still mid paced.
Scene four
 Lighting : Bright, it isn't dark, the light seems to be
naturally provided in the shot.
 Sound : both non diegetic and diegetic sound. We can
hear the beeping of the robot. But also hear some
sinister background music.
 Editing : This shot seems to be another establishing
shot, it is capturing the terrain. The cuts are still mid
paced.
Scene five
 Lighting :: Bright, it isn't dark, the light seems to be naturally
provided in the shot.
 Sound : we hear the sound of wind gusts. And also hear the
moans of the tauntaun. Then we can hear non diegetic
sounds such as the star wars theme being played and mixed
with another minor track.
 Editing : this first character we see that is a main character,
editing is still mid paced, and we are surprised as this
tauntaun and character appears after a zoom in from a long
shot.
