Film Opening Analysis:
Nightcrawler
Josh pyne
Scene one
 Lighting : The environment around is dark, but the light
provided is from lit signs and buildings near by. This gives the
outside part of the set a feeling of isolation, because it is
dark.
 Editing : There is just various panning shots of the
environment. All these shots are just establishing shots, the
credits are present during these.
 Sound : We can hear both non diegetic sound and diegetic
sound. There are sirens from police cars and there is
background music, it is calm and played on a major scale
meaning it doesn’t sound sinister.
Scene two
 Lighting : We see Jake Gyllenhaal here, he is in the
dark with the bright city in front of him. The area he is in
is dark and full of old rusty metals. This indicates he is
up to no good.
 Sound : We can here just diegetic sounds, such as the
trains horn, the clacking of the rail tracks in front, and
Jake Gyllenhaal struggling to cut the fence.
 Editing : Editing is mid paced, faster than scene one.
This indicates more action is going on. Mostly medium
longshots and establishing shots so far.
Scene three
 Lighting : Jake Gyllenhaal is confronted by a security
guard with a flash light. He seems suddenly afraid since
he starts acting odd. This could indicate he is afraid of
coming out of isolation. Because the rest of the area is
dark.
 Sound : Only diegetic sound of the security guard
shouting at Jake Gyllenhaal, we can also hear rail
tracks clacking in the background.
Scene four
 Lighting : Suddenly in scene four we are confronted with lots
of flashing lights, this indicates that the atmosphere has
changed, and that the main character which is clearly Jake
Gyllenhaal is going to take some action of some sort.
 Sound : Only diegetic sound. Lots of sirens and traffic in the
background, but we can mainly hear the main character Jake
Gyllenhaal talk to Bill Paxton.
 Editing : There seems to be more close ups, and medium
close ups. There is less establishing shots. The focus is on
the main character Jake Gyllenhaal and the man he is talking
to Bill Paxton.
Scene five
 Lighting : More natural light, such as the sun. this
signifies that the bad time has passed.
 Sound : Only non diegetic sound, we can hear the
voice of news people, and a calming background track.
This gives the impression that the main character Jake
Gyllenhaal has found what he needs to do or what
actions he needs to take.
 Editing : we go back to slow paced establishing shots,
signifying that the action is finished for now.
