Film Inspiration Task
What we are basing are trailer on
 Due to the genre of our film trailer (drama), we have
decided to gain inspiration from the programme Top
Boy. Top Boy has a mix of 3 genres; crime, drama,
and thriller. It is about an underground drugs
business that is being run by Dushane and his friend
Sully to become the richest men on the block.
Why did we choose to use Top Boy as our
inspiration?
 We decided to choose Top Boy as our inspiration
when creating our film trailer due to many reasons.
Firstly, it closely relates to the theme of our film
trailer, which is drama. Secondly, it is a programme
that all members of our group had seen, and we felt
that we were all familiar with it enough to use
techniques from Top Boy to implement into our film
trailer to make it as professional as we could.
Why did we choose to use Top Boy as our
inspiration?
 Our film trailer involves many of the features that
Top Boy has. This includes the drug business, the
criminal underworld, the enigmas, the twists. Our
programme has many conflicts that relate to
Dushane in Top Boy, and about the life of Ra’Nell.
 As well as this, Top Boy also includes many aspects
that we originally wanted to implement into our film
trailer, such as life struggles, a turn of unfortunate
events, etc.
How we are going to implement real media
techniques into our film trailer
 The way in which we are going to implement real
media techniques from Top Boy into our film trailer
is by using our three stage process.
 The first stage is we will watch clips from Top Boy
and pick what techniques we will consider
appropriate to use in our trailer.
 The second stage is we will decide as a group of the
clips we have chosen from the programme what we
will actually use in the trailer.
 The final stage is we will
What techniques/features we are going to use
 One feature from Top Boy that we are going to implement into
our film trailer is the use of drugs. Due to our film being about
crime and drugs, we thought that this would be appropriate to
include to express our genre of our film. We feel that this will be
good to include in our trailer as it would really appeal to our
target market. As well as this, we have noticed that a lot of
successful crime films have included drugs into both their trailers
and their films, so we thought we would use it in ours also.
Costume and Props
 Another feature of Top Boy we are going to implement into our
film trailer is the costume and props used. As shown below,
typical clothing of a crime programme/film is tracksuit hoodies,
jeans, snapbacks, etc. We feel that putting this into our trailer
will relate more to our target audience and expresses our sub
genre of crime. Also, the colour is very significant also. The
common colour of black used in a lot of crime films/programmes
gives off a sense of dark, underground activity happening. This
too we wanted to input into our trailer as we feel that it would
give our characters the right look needed to make both our film
and trailer as effective as possible.
Language used
 Another feature used very commonly in Top Boy is the
language from the characters. Top Boy includes many
swear words and a lot of London slang. This is
something we want to implement into our film trailer
as it relates to our genre in terms of crime, and appeals
to our target market. For example, a common slang
word used in Top Boy that we have already thought to
include in our trailer is ‘fam’. We feel that by
implementing language such as this will really give off
the impression to any audience watching our trailer
that it is a crime film.
Language Used
 However, we decided not to completely implement
this language into all of our characters within our
trailer. As well as this, we also decided we did not
want our character at first within the trailer to sound
completely like this, using this type of language. This
was because the other main genre of our film trailer
is drama, and so we wanted to have some sense of
normality to create our storyline, and we felt that if
they spoke fully using slang words/phrases, then we
would not be able to do this.
