Who would be the audience for your media
product?
■ The trailer targets adults and teenagers where it will be too violent for children
to watch the movie and it includes a scene which is unhealthy for the kids as the
main character Louis tried to release stress by smoking. Also it may be too
exciting for the elderly and pregnant women to watch as it consists of loud noise
from the gun shooting scene. Therefore, to conclude it is most suitable for
teenagers as they know what’s the right choice to do. Moreover, there are many
benefits for teenagers to watch it as the plot of the movie narrates varies
morals, for instances, we should not fully believe on a person because things
might not happen as you expected which will cause failure. Asians would be
more suitable to watch this film because the film is based on an Asian scenario.
Furthermore, I would like to present my media to pleasure seekers who are
looking for movies which are giving them a sense of excitement and a buzz.
How did you attract/address your media product?
■ Through the trailer, I tried to create a few tension scenes so to attract
teenagers to watch the film audiences will be curious on the plot of the story.
For instance, the last part of the trailer where Alastair is collecting money in a
dark and narrow place creates a twist which matches the theme of the story
and and creates a tension for the audience to think before coming in to the
cinema to watch the movie which can easily help to attract audiences.
Moreover, I’ve created a contrast between the relationship of the two main
character during different period of time. This helps to increase the curiosity of
audiences to think about what will happen to the pair of best friends.
Furthermore, I have chosen to film the trailer at night in some places where it
looks like alley so to create a feeling where the drug dealer is dealing it in a
sneaky way. Last but not least, my main characters are male which helps to
attract female audience and which female gaze theory is used.
How does your media product represent
particular social group?
■ In this movie trailer I represent the childhood of the main characters by
studying and having fun with each other which is representing the younger
generation. Moreover, brighter color is used to present the happiness during
their childhood. The happiness during their childhood life makes a huge
contrast after they finish school and started to work. To represent the working
society a darker color is used to show the audiences that working is harsh and
difficult. Furthermore, Louis also represents the lower class people as he does
not have enough knowledge to work therefore he has to work as a drug dealer
to earn money for survival which against his will and lead him to much stress.
On the other hand, Alastair represent the group of high authority people
where nowadays they did lots of illegal stuffs to gain money. Throughout the
two main characters, it helps to create irony to many issues happened in
today’s society including many high authority officers starts corruption to
increase profit.
What have you learnt about technologies from
the process of constructing this product?
■ I have learnt quite a few skills through out the process of constructing the
product. To begin with, I’ve learnt to edit the video with iMovie which it helps a
lots to create different effects for the trailer. For example, it provides filters to
create the mood of different scenes which refers to the part where the two
main characters were joking around while studying. Moreover, due to the fact
that the lighting is too dark, the application helps to brighten the color of the
film to create a balance between each shot. Moreover, I have learnt to gather
all the separate shots in to a trailer by adding in subtitles which can be done
easily through the application. Furthermore, for transitioning I do not only use
subtitles but also dissolving the video so the transiting will be smooth. Besides,
the technology improve for DSLR camera makes it more portable for filming
as I can take it everywhere including oversea. Also, using manual focus makes
it easier to give a clear look of the actors as the auto focus always refocus
which makes the shooting unsuccessful as shown below.
What kind of media institution might distribute
your media product and why?
■ I believe that this film can be distributed to the Hong Kong Film Council as the
main characters in the trailer consist of all Chinese which I think that it will be
more suitable to be shown in Asia countries. It helps to maximize the number
of audience as it may create empathy as some of the shooting took place in
Hong Kong. Moreover, the idea of the trailer came from many Hong Kong
movies and television programs also researched movies are mostly from Asia
therefore it is easier to start advertising from the Hong Kong market.
Furthermore, the Hong Kong Film Council also help to increase the number of
audience by promoting the film to Mainland China and oversea countries.
Besides, Film Development Fund Scheme for Film Production Grant is
provided when it is needed. As it is the first film I have launched I believe I will
need some support and guidance from the council. Last but not least, I would
like my first made media product to be shown in my homeland therefore I
have chosen to distribute my media product to the Hong Kong Film Council.
In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
■ First of all, I have set the title of the trailer called ‘The Twist’ which the
audience will be curious of the story plot as I have also created the scene
where Alastair received money at the back of the trailer to hint the audiences
what will be the twist of the movie. Moreover, the mise-en-scene used in the
trailer helps to create great effect for the theme of the movie. Firstly, the
scene where Louis smoked create emphasis that he is rebellious and stressed
as the prop cigarettes is regraded unclean. This also helps to create curiosity of
why he was stressed and starts smoking. Secondly, during the trailer Louis
using wore dark color clothing to show that he is doing some illegal act while
Alastair wore a white top to show that he is clean and he is a police. However,
in the back of the film, Alastair changed his clothing into dark color tone to
show that there may be a twist in the movie. Furthermore, subtitles are used
to avoid confusion and to emphasis the name of the movie which was in bold
and red in color to seek for attention of viewers and to be clear with the name
of the movie.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do
you feel you have learnt in the progression from
it to the full product?
■ Comparing with my preliminary task I have learnt a lot of editing skills to
improve my outcome of the trailer. To begin with, I have learnt to correct the
lighting through the software which I have failed to make it right on the
preliminary task. Also I have learnt from my mistakes which I have done wrong
in the preliminary video that I have avoided to film my trailer during the day
time which had caused uneven lighting between each shot. Moreover, I have
learnt to make the film more interesting by adding in background music to
create the nervous feeling where Louis is dealing with drugs. This helps to
boost up the atmosphere according to the theme. Furthermore, throughout
the research I have learnt more technique and given more idea to make my
trailer more appealing so to attract more audiences. These techniques include
creating tension. Creating tension is the part where I feel interesting when I am
watching the research trailers. Therefore, comparing with my preliminary task,
the final film is more interesting.
In this scene the technique of shot
reverse shot is used which is learnt
from the preliminary task.
Studio light is used rather than using flash
light or natural light to create the effect of a
dangerous place.
Mise-en-scene are used to present
the identity of each character. For
instance, a stack of money in a brown
envelope to represent Alastair is a
police gang.

Media evaluation

  • 2. Who would be the audience for your media product? ■ The trailer targets adults and teenagers where it will be too violent for children to watch the movie and it includes a scene which is unhealthy for the kids as the main character Louis tried to release stress by smoking. Also it may be too exciting for the elderly and pregnant women to watch as it consists of loud noise from the gun shooting scene. Therefore, to conclude it is most suitable for teenagers as they know what’s the right choice to do. Moreover, there are many benefits for teenagers to watch it as the plot of the movie narrates varies morals, for instances, we should not fully believe on a person because things might not happen as you expected which will cause failure. Asians would be more suitable to watch this film because the film is based on an Asian scenario. Furthermore, I would like to present my media to pleasure seekers who are looking for movies which are giving them a sense of excitement and a buzz.
  • 3. How did you attract/address your media product? ■ Through the trailer, I tried to create a few tension scenes so to attract teenagers to watch the film audiences will be curious on the plot of the story. For instance, the last part of the trailer where Alastair is collecting money in a dark and narrow place creates a twist which matches the theme of the story and and creates a tension for the audience to think before coming in to the cinema to watch the movie which can easily help to attract audiences. Moreover, I’ve created a contrast between the relationship of the two main character during different period of time. This helps to increase the curiosity of audiences to think about what will happen to the pair of best friends. Furthermore, I have chosen to film the trailer at night in some places where it looks like alley so to create a feeling where the drug dealer is dealing it in a sneaky way. Last but not least, my main characters are male which helps to attract female audience and which female gaze theory is used.
  • 4. How does your media product represent particular social group? ■ In this movie trailer I represent the childhood of the main characters by studying and having fun with each other which is representing the younger generation. Moreover, brighter color is used to present the happiness during their childhood. The happiness during their childhood life makes a huge contrast after they finish school and started to work. To represent the working society a darker color is used to show the audiences that working is harsh and difficult. Furthermore, Louis also represents the lower class people as he does not have enough knowledge to work therefore he has to work as a drug dealer to earn money for survival which against his will and lead him to much stress. On the other hand, Alastair represent the group of high authority people where nowadays they did lots of illegal stuffs to gain money. Throughout the two main characters, it helps to create irony to many issues happened in today’s society including many high authority officers starts corruption to increase profit.
  • 5. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product? ■ I have learnt quite a few skills through out the process of constructing the product. To begin with, I’ve learnt to edit the video with iMovie which it helps a lots to create different effects for the trailer. For example, it provides filters to create the mood of different scenes which refers to the part where the two main characters were joking around while studying. Moreover, due to the fact that the lighting is too dark, the application helps to brighten the color of the film to create a balance between each shot. Moreover, I have learnt to gather all the separate shots in to a trailer by adding in subtitles which can be done easily through the application. Furthermore, for transitioning I do not only use subtitles but also dissolving the video so the transiting will be smooth. Besides, the technology improve for DSLR camera makes it more portable for filming as I can take it everywhere including oversea. Also, using manual focus makes it easier to give a clear look of the actors as the auto focus always refocus which makes the shooting unsuccessful as shown below.
  • 6. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? ■ I believe that this film can be distributed to the Hong Kong Film Council as the main characters in the trailer consist of all Chinese which I think that it will be more suitable to be shown in Asia countries. It helps to maximize the number of audience as it may create empathy as some of the shooting took place in Hong Kong. Moreover, the idea of the trailer came from many Hong Kong movies and television programs also researched movies are mostly from Asia therefore it is easier to start advertising from the Hong Kong market. Furthermore, the Hong Kong Film Council also help to increase the number of audience by promoting the film to Mainland China and oversea countries. Besides, Film Development Fund Scheme for Film Production Grant is provided when it is needed. As it is the first film I have launched I believe I will need some support and guidance from the council. Last but not least, I would like my first made media product to be shown in my homeland therefore I have chosen to distribute my media product to the Hong Kong Film Council.
  • 7. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? ■ First of all, I have set the title of the trailer called ‘The Twist’ which the audience will be curious of the story plot as I have also created the scene where Alastair received money at the back of the trailer to hint the audiences what will be the twist of the movie. Moreover, the mise-en-scene used in the trailer helps to create great effect for the theme of the movie. Firstly, the scene where Louis smoked create emphasis that he is rebellious and stressed as the prop cigarettes is regraded unclean. This also helps to create curiosity of why he was stressed and starts smoking. Secondly, during the trailer Louis using wore dark color clothing to show that he is doing some illegal act while Alastair wore a white top to show that he is clean and he is a police. However, in the back of the film, Alastair changed his clothing into dark color tone to show that there may be a twist in the movie. Furthermore, subtitles are used to avoid confusion and to emphasis the name of the movie which was in bold and red in color to seek for attention of viewers and to be clear with the name of the movie.
  • 8. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product? ■ Comparing with my preliminary task I have learnt a lot of editing skills to improve my outcome of the trailer. To begin with, I have learnt to correct the lighting through the software which I have failed to make it right on the preliminary task. Also I have learnt from my mistakes which I have done wrong in the preliminary video that I have avoided to film my trailer during the day time which had caused uneven lighting between each shot. Moreover, I have learnt to make the film more interesting by adding in background music to create the nervous feeling where Louis is dealing with drugs. This helps to boost up the atmosphere according to the theme. Furthermore, throughout the research I have learnt more technique and given more idea to make my trailer more appealing so to attract more audiences. These techniques include creating tension. Creating tension is the part where I feel interesting when I am watching the research trailers. Therefore, comparing with my preliminary task, the final film is more interesting.
  • 9. In this scene the technique of shot reverse shot is used which is learnt from the preliminary task. Studio light is used rather than using flash light or natural light to create the effect of a dangerous place. Mise-en-scene are used to present the identity of each character. For instance, a stack of money in a brown envelope to represent Alastair is a police gang.
