- And of course it is not diabetes, or obesity or heart disease that kills people. Those are just the clinical manifestations of the Actual Causes, depicted in this table, that many of you have seen. It is tobacco, and poor nutrition and inactivity that are the real drivers of morbidity and premature death. And it is the community conditions that are the causes of these causes … the way our communities and our social and environment shape our defaults for health, or unhealthy behavior, the way we make healthy choices easy, or really hard.
- Does a neighborhood have supermarkets, and access to affordable produce, or s it saturated by fast food and liquor stores … and lots of billboards and other advertising targeting you with ads to eat the unhealthy stuff.
- That is the fundamental approach we are taking with KP’s community health initiatives for HEAL – intensive, place-based community change efforts now going on in 39 communities across the country.
